Is this level of bill splitting normal?

Renting with DP. We don’t pool wages so split our food shops. I’m happy with a rough estimate , he insists on going item by item on the recipes so it’s fair. I feel like he’s taking it too far now though. Some examples from the past week (we do 2/3 medium size shops a week rather than one big one):

-him thinking he’ll eat an extra bag of crisps than me so paying like 30p extra
-I only have weetabix occasionally so I had to pay about 20% of the total
-from tonight and what prompted me to post - I’ve had a stomach bug which I’m struggling to shift so I had to pay a higher % towards the loo roll.

This isn’t normal, surely!? He earns well and has no reason to worry about money.

You’ve surely been out for dinner tho even if not for your birthday. Does he treat you to that or analyse the bill?

I really hope this is a joke, school holidays boredom, or troll, thread.
If not, DUMP HIM.

Say what now! Hell no

Gosh so wierd. Go back to living separately …… for good. It’s great that you tried to live together and he’s shown you who he is earlier on. I’d end it.

You could have fun taking this to absurd lengths. E.g.: You're taller and bigger than me, that means you use more soap so you pay more towards that; your clothes use more water and washing powder in the machine, so you pay more towards water bills and washing powder, you use more water than I do in the shower so even more towards the water bill, you shed more skin flakes so you pay more towards electricity and vacuum bags, you wear out the floors and carpets more so start paying into a replacement fund, etc etc.

Good idea. I suggest producing a massive spreadsheet with complex calculations for all the differences, all leading to a final split of 50:50.
What a complete knobhead he is.

This is extreme and definitely not normal at all. And paying more towards loo roll because you've had a bug?... I have no words for that!
I do hope your feeling better soon though, tummy bugs are vile

Is this a joke? Please please tell me this is a joke. I can’t cope with thinking there are really people out there like this!

blythet · Yesterday 23:33

If you think about it woman probably all use more toilet roll than most men on a daily basis. Therefore all of us that split groceries 50/50 have been ripping our DPs off for years! I wonder how much we all owe in back payment

fashionqueen0123 · Yesterday 23:36

This can not be real.

It would be fascinating to hear about his parents, how his life was growing up, if he has lots of siblings to share with…

Sensiblesal · Yesterday 23:37

Has he got OCD?

can you work out roughly how much you spend & suggest you just put 50/50 in & then do the shops as needed.

gonna be miserable for a long time if you don’t fix it

To be fair, being with someone who splits the cost of loo roll is probably very effective contraception. I would permanently clamp shut.

Haha well yes! No one would sleep with someone who did this.

91percent · Yesterday 23:40

I would run a mile at this! I would literally have left after the loo roll comment. It’s just unbelievably far removed from anyone I would ever consider a life with! No way in hell

ZemblanityZen · Yesterday 23:44

That's hilarious. But surely you're eating less at the moment, so that would balance out the loo roll.

Good point. But then food is likely to be more expensive than the extra loo roll so I feel like we need more context. my guess would be that Op could actually be in credit right now

Hit the wrong button and I can’t change it on my phone.

YANBU.

I assumed the 1% of YABU were people thinking she’s U for asking or U for putting up with it. But hit the wrong button makes sense too!

Clafoutie · Yesterday 23:47

The loo roll thing. Speechless. This would end the relationship for me. Completely abnormal.

notacooldad · Yesterday 23:49

Absolutely no way is that normal, what a freak!

OneFineDay22 · Yesterday 23:49

OP, have you ever counted exactly how many weetabix you eat from a box? You might be getting conned.

Unless they do more poos!

Cattywillow · Yesterday 23:52

Insanity. When DP and I moved in together we opened a joint account into which we put a percentage (which grew over time) of our earnings. That was used for all household expenses. We could use our remaining money as we chose. So whoever earned more paid more but we contributed the same proportion of our incomes. It worked very well and save all this faff.

dottydaily · Yesterday 23:53

that's ridiculous, would not even explain to him why he is dumped, just go.madness...

Boredonafridaynight · Yesterday 23:56

Thats not normal, if that the case dh owes me a fortune cos hes never off the toilet!!

OneFineDay22 · Yesterday 23:58

Was it his idea to move in together and did he say “so we can save money on bills etc”?
