Hi everyone so I got a coil swap over last week. From the mirena to the Kyleena. They told me to abstain from sex for 7 days or use condoms. But we did not once. This was last Tuesday I got the coil swap over. And I had sex the Saturday the few days before. I done a pregnancy test today and I swear I see a second line! But would a pregnancy test show up this early on?! HELP

Thank you! I will. Does it look positive to you

I can see something that could be a line or could be an evap line. A digital will remove the ambiguity for you.

It specifically says most end in a positive outcome. Of course there’s people who it doesn’t and it names the risks - substance abuse, smoking, young age and lower educational achievement. This woman already has a child, she’s not on here talking about her drug addiction. The only thing we know about her is she didn’t take precautions, so it’s wild for some of these responses acting like she’s committing some kind of moral crime for potentially having a baby that she hadn’t planned

Joliefolie · 19/08/2026 23:29

I suppose it also depends on your definition of 'planning'.

Pudmyboy · 19/08/2026 23:37

Sorry I haven't read all replies, so this may have been said: if your Mirena was in date when the exchange happened and there was no problem with the exchange then you are protected, you are advised no unprotected sex 7 days prior in case there is a problem with fitting the new coil and sperm can linger in the vagina for a number of days, so may be still present if the new coil cannot be fitted and, say, you refused any other method and wanted just to rebook, then if you ovulated after the Mirena was removed there would be a risk of pregnancy.
I am going to attach a table from the College of Sexual and Reproductive Health which is the guiding body for contraception in the UK.
It is a bit medical, LNG-IUD is the hormonal coil, 52 mg is the Mirena and 19.5 is the Kyleena.
The top part of the table shows that if the Mirena was in date when the swap happened and the swap was successful, there's no risk.
The bottom half shows that abstaining/using extra precautions is necessary if the coil exchange happened when the Mirena had expired.

@tanya9995 the information given in my previous post is available to anyone, it's on the CoSRH website but may be quicker to do a Google lens (or equivalent) search.
So this would seem to hinge on whether your Mirena was in date.
The 7 day post insertion rule is for the first time a hormonal coil is inserted, or if the previous coil had expired. And the Mirena is viable for 8 years post insertion.
Please contact whoever fitted the coil to discuss this.

tanya9995 · 20/08/2026 06:45

im so confused though if there was no risk then why did my nurse say to use condoms for 7 days

I only had the mirena in for a year

Actually frequent sex means you are less likely to be pregnant than if you did it once or twice. If you are pregnant, it's more likely to be a girl.

Eh?!

tanya9995 · 20/08/2026 07:01

NEW PHOTO. It’s negative this mornin. That line must be a shadow line I am definitly not pregnant. The coil swap over you are protected straight away

Cause I’m human and sometimes we are silly

Nah, human MIGHT be “shit we got carried away last night and had unprotected sex when we were told not to” but it isn’t “and then we did that again daily, including 3 times one day”.

This does look negative to me. But test again in a week, as it may be too early to show up now

tanya9995 · 20/08/2026 07:55

I done a digital one and it says not pregnant. So I don’t know why in them other ones there’s any sort of line showing

Has this given you a bit of a wake up call about not being so casual about contraception or lack thereof? You ignoring instructions and having sex almost ten times unprotected when you were told the risk of pregnancy, despite the huge impact it would have had on your life (and your existing child’s life most importantly) in a relatively new relationship seems very odd.

Time to take it more seriously.

bananaobama · 20/08/2026 08:32

I remember being “forgetful” with the pill when i wanted to fall pregnant in the early days of my relationship . I accidentally missed days here and there. Always thinking it would be a happy accident

never happened though.

She’s on the coil! And not pregnant

if anything it’s a wake up call that she wants another baby

I had friend who did that. Was seeing a guy who she wanted to settle down with but he wasn’t really interested in a serious thing. So my friend suddenly became very “forgetful” with her pill. Always saying “oh god I hope I’m not pregnant!! It would be so awful!! I just totally forgot to take it all last week because I was so busy” It did work for her. She got the baby. Bloke still left though and she was devastated.

Please contact the service that put it in, they should explain why they said it, they may be being super-cautious, or it's their general advice, or there is something in your medical history that made them suggest this.

ShutupLwren · 20/08/2026 09:46

@tanya9995 please test again in a week, just for safety.

aurynne · 20/08/2026 10:17

This is really heart breaking. Hearing how people can bring a life into this world with far less planning and thinking than I had when choosing to buy a phone. While other would-be parents who try for years and are really committed never fall pregnant, or have to go through gruelling processes to adopt a baby.

But never mind OP, how funny, hahaha, that you had unprotected sex 3 times a day and posted 15 photos of pregnancy tests. I am sure some other mumsnetters who have been trying for years find it hilarious.

I never wanted children. I have spent 30 years of my life being extremely careful with contraception, and if ther ever was a doubt that it had worked, I was at the pharmacy first thing in the morning to get the morning after pill. As a result, surprise surprise, I have never been pregnant.

Well, you're not pregnant. What a relief, aye? Go and have unprotected sex another 7 times to see if you're luckier this time.

Mumsnet isn’t just for mums. And this will shock you but there’s even blokes on here.

that’s a spectacularly nasty reply.

Yes, a very nasty reply and not even applicable luckily.

OP's reading skills are not the best.

Bluetray · 20/08/2026 10:51

It is a good thing. Delighted for you.
Unexpected pregnancies early in a relationship unfortunately rarely work out for women on MN.

Women are left with babies, alone, juggling childcare and trying to keep jobs and pay for everything.

It is brutal to read.

Yes, yes, yes, they love their babies of course, but life is brutally hard.

Wishing you well OP.
