Couples holiday grief

Please help mn I’m not sure what to do.

Couoles A B and C are going on holiday tomorrow. They are driving in in 2 cars. Couples A and B live in the same town so they are travelling together. Couple C are coming from a different direction and are travelling separately. The holiday has been split equally 3 ways and everyone intends to pay for themselves whilst there. Travel costs for petrol and parking will be approximately £120 per car. Couple A intended to pay for their costs as they know couple B earn significantly less than them (about 30k a year less) but would be happy if couple b get them a couple of drinks or similar.
Couple C have now approached Couple A and said they think it’s unfair Couple B are not paying for their travel expenses and that it would be fair to split it 3 ways. A pointed out that B do not have much money and C replied that they treat themselves plenty (which is true they are very much live for today). A feels uncomfortable broaching B for money especially at such late notice as it’s too late for them to make alternative arrangements should they want to.

Yabu B should pay their fair share
YANBU C is wrong to ask for shared costs

Yes of course! Couple B being subsidised while couple C are not is completely different if it's a family thing. Your OP seemed to imply three unrelated couples (or at least that's how I read it).

My guess is that it’s not the first time Couple B have been subsidised by their parents after spending all their money treating themselves.

Chilihealer · Today 14:27

Fuck all to do with C, there’s more to this tho I’d hazard a guess at C not being too keen on B really and just want to have a little stare of the pot.
Or are C on the cadge wanting all travel costs split 3 ways so B chip into theirs even tho their not even going in their car?
Either way C sound like weirdos I’d tell them to stick their noses out.

Favouritism, good grief. Me and my brothers are taking our mother out for her birthday next week. I live in the next street to my mum and I’m giving her a lift but for the purpose of this comment let’s assume my mum is driving to the restaurant which is 2 miles from where we live and giving me a lift. Brother 1 is travelling 7 miles to dinner and brother 2 is driving 128 miles. Are you suggesting brother 2 should be subsidised? He would be offended at the offer.

Completely different. You are doing nice things for your mum, not your mum favouring one of her children which seems to be the case by the lack of response from the OP.
We are couple C with MIL, DH and his sister are “ignored” because they’ve worked hard and done well, while the youngest sibling is given cash/childcare/whatever they ask for. It’s draining. You either treat all your kids or none of them - or you end up with unhappy families!

anon2022anon · Today 14:31

I think if the guesses are right, and B&C are siblings, then if you don't do something to make the situation 'Fairer' for C, this is possibly the last family holiday you have. Can you afford to give a similar amount that you've subsided B to C towards a meal out, or something? I'd just like to treat you, so here's some £50, go get yourself some cocktails.

If I were C and it was a friends- I'd just have a little chunter to my husband about people needing to grow up. If it was a sibling, there's a good chance either it's happened before origjt happen again on the holiday, and so I'd think why am bothering to go on holiday to feel like my siblings the favourite?

Vivi0 · Today 14:34

I don’t understand how couple B are being subsidised.

Couple A (assuming them to be the parents) have offered them a lift to the airport because they are all going there, they live close to them and it makes sense not to take 2 cars.

I don’t expect compensation from my parents every time my sibling sets foot in their car. It’s wild.

WallaceinAnderland · Today 14:35

TheEighthDwarf · Today 14:23

This is very peculiar. How did couple C ‘become aware’ of the arrangement and how do you know what everyone earns?

Because they are all family.

FaceEatingLeopard · Today 14:35

See this is the problem when an OP gives a half baked incomplete story. The answers change according to the situation and the OP fucks off never to be seen again. Meanwhile the thread rumbles on for 8 weeks with very few people actually aware of the reality and giving freely of their 'wisdom' based on bugger all.

TheDenimPoet · Today 14:36

Whoever is driving gets to decide who pays for fuel, and how they pay for it. If one couple is driving down alone, the only thing they need concern themselves about is their own cost of travel. End of.

This holiday will be an absolute nightmare if this is an issue already.

This summarises so many threads on MN atm!

Shloopie · Today 14:39

Nah, even if A are the parents and B and C are their kids (and kids' partners) C are still way out of line imo. Indulging in miserly whining as to why B shouldn't be given a lift in A's car is ridiculous and would make me wonder how I'd raised such a woe-is-me whiner.

Yes, and now everyone is answering as if it is a parents and children situation when, as far as I can see, there has been no confirmation at all from the OP that this is the case! As you said, the OP has now disappeared and the thread has gone off in completely the wrong direction.

anon2022anon · Today 14:40

@Vivi0 car parking and petrol for 2 cars, for 3 couples, costs £240. Couple Bs bill for this family trip away is £120 cheaper than couple C, because A has decided not to ask for money.
Not so much an issue if you are friends who you don't see or hear of this issue more than once a year.
More of an issue if it's a sibling, where you are probably aware of the small favours, money gifts or being let off repayments on a regular basis. Especially since the OP has said that couple B are less well off due to live for the moment.

Parents shouldn't really treat one kid being sensible as a reason to give less.

It's not just being given a lift though. It would be fine for them to get the lift if they were paying their share.

Because they're family

Outside of my OH, nobody in my family knows how much we earn, it’s fuck all to do with the rest of them and they know that.

The holiday is being split between the three couples. Couple A's car is bringing A and B to the location and couple A are paying for the petrol and parking. Wouldn't occur to me in a month of Sunday's to have my nose out of joint if one of my siblings were B. Loser behaviour.

MrsBatshitRatshit · Today 14:48

Is it too late to rearrange the holiday without Couple C? They sound like a right pair of twats.

Would you view it differently if it was?

Are C dicks generally?

Would you view it differently if it was?

I would view it differently
first of all it explains how couple C found out about it

secondly, it would make me wonder if C felt that B got a lot more support and understanding generally from A than they did - it suggests there’s a history of them feeling hard done by.

would you say you’re closer to, or enjoy the company of B more than C?

IStillHearTheWaves · Today 14:54

Jesus, these people are actually friends? Who has time for this level of score keeping? It's so mean spirited and petty, I couldn't be friends with people like that.

Definitely nothing to do with couple c. Everyone is paying their own way on holiday too. No-one is dependent on anyone else. The only shared cost is the holiday itself. Couple A get to decide whether to split the journey with B or pay for it entirely.

alfagirl73 · Today 14:54

It’s couple A’s car - it’s up to them if they choose to split the cost with B - it’s nothing to do with C.

Would you view it differently if it was?

Yes, I would.

I'm wondering if Couple A are parents, and B & C are the children of A. Then I can see why couple C would get annoyed at B mooching off their parents when they spend a lot generally in life, despite earning less.

If they are all unrelated and just friends/acquaintances then YANBU.

If you'd read the OP's replies, it implies that A are B and C's parents, not actually random couples or friends at all!

Rpop · Today 15:01

If siblings, then I’d feel a bit different. Perhaps may be a little unfair on couple c. But it depends on family dynamics.

I genuinely wouldn’t mind if my brother and partner were couple B and I was couple C. I wouldn’t complain….but I’d completely understand how some families have different stuff going on….

Perhaps it's not so much "woe is me whiner", and more sick to death of their sibling always mooching off their parents when they never get treated by them.

My younger sibling takes takes takes from our elderly parents, I say nothing, I don't let it bother me anymore, but it did for quite some time. Now I just think my sibling is pathetic and taking advantage of the elderly.
