Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

YABU to post threads with half a story. As the first poster said Reform will very likely just save it for the most severe cases, and chronic conditions. People who need it won't have it taken away.

Just as Keir Starmer was trying to do, and What Andy Burnham might do yet, they're trying to stop the benefit being given to people - younger adults mostly - under 30 - who are getting it for stress, depression, anxiety, and ADHD and the like. Many of who have NO intention of ever working...

It's untenable for these people to be on these benefits for life (and never work) which is what many intend on doing. Some of them have no intention of ever going to work. Millions of people have held down jobs and careers over the years/decades with all kinds of mental health issues, you can't just say 'I'm never working, because I have anxiety!' Even with depression you can't just never work. I know a number of people who have had a lifelong battle with depression, and they have always worked.

There are too many people (as I say mostly under 30 I would say,) who are too 'depressed' to work, or suffer 'anxiety' and cannot possibly hold down a job.. This is a situation that cannot go on.

Not being funny, but back when I was that age, I would have been laughed at, and had my arse kicked out to work (by my parents, and/or the DWP/DSS) if I had said 'I can't work because I am depressed, or have anxiety. Come on, anyone who has a grain of common sense knows this cannot continue. These young people need to get out into the workplace. They can't just never work, and claim benefits until they are 70 when they get their pension.

And yes I KNOW PIP is not always an out of work benefit. I am clearly talking about those claiming it, who DON'T work!

As has been said, PIP (and disability benefits in general) should only be for the more severe cases/chronic illnesses/physical disabilities, not for people (who are mostly in their late teens and 20s) who have 'anxiety.'

.

If that is the case why is it awarded to people who aren’t working. I know someone who receives it who hasn’t had a job for over ten years. They had a minor stroke a couple of years ago, applied for pip and got it. They are capable of working but don’t want to. They have an issue with both alcohol and drugs, and life is much easier without the responsibility of having to get up and go to work every day. They have a nice life.

PIP isn’t awarded based on your employment status.

PIP is awarded on how your disability or health condition symptoms affect your daily life.

You say the person you know is capable of working, but then go on to say they have issues with alcohol and drugs and have had a stroke in the past. You don’t make any sense.

It’s better to keep quiet when you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. And be thankful you don’t have a health condition.

My ex husband claims PIP after having a cancerous testicle removed two years ago.

He openly says it affects his day to day living not one jot, yet he's still very happy with the extra income.

Having a cancerous testicle removed does not qualify a person for PIP.
He will, at one stage, have completed a form stating that this has an impact on his day to day life. He will have had to give details of how it limits him, what he cannot do, what help he needs to get by.

He'll remember it. It's a complex and long form and process.

Did he lie? Have things changed?

Next year he will have to fill out a reapplication form. What will he answer to the question 'How does this impact on your day to day life?'

I think it does need to be reformed somehow. Disabled people of course need to be supported.

But as someone who struggles with mental health, I think with some cases and ‘conditions’ it would be better to focus on putting more money into support.

Exactly. Throwing money at people with mental health issues doesn't help them and in fact makes them dependent on the cash and so it ensures that they do not get better.

The money needs to be spent on therapy.

BlackRowan · 16/08/2026 11:11

They will certainly get votes on the back of it because PIP needs to be cut and the fact that Labour MPs failed to support that bill and turned on Keir Starmer is the reason they lost ground to Reform in local elections. So Labour will be rinsed in the next elections.

PIP is not means tested, unspecified purpose payment which is ridiculous

ShutupLwren · 16/08/2026 11:11

@x2boys mine also is a bathroom flooder! He’s flooded us so badly we currently have half a kitchen ceiling in need of plastering. He fucking loves flooding that bathroom. He sneaks in the middle of the night and just flings water everywhere! Absolute menace 😂 if you didn’t laugh you’d cry!

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 16/08/2026 09:30

Clacton has one of the highest rates of PIP claimants in the country, at 18% of working adults.

I wonder if the people who vote for Farage realise it’s them that will suffer financially? Maybe they all think their health is bad enough that they’ll qualify for the new scheme but the whole point of it is to reduce the number of people being supported so the likelihood is a good proportion of them would lose out.

Maybe it's the people of Clacton who don't recieve PIP who have turned out and voted, because they are struggling financially and feeling that the current situation is unfair and unsustainable. How many people on PIP make the effort to vote? Probably not the lazy, layabout ones?

Sereine · 16/08/2026 11:12

Coconutter24 · 16/08/2026 09:22

You haven’t put any information about what they would replace it with, so you’ve given half a story. They would instead have a Health security allowance but only the ‘severe, enduring and high-risk cases’ would receive cash support. So those that absolutely need it will get financial support. Which is how it should be.

If you have to prove your condition is severe AND enduring AND high risk, the reality is that hardly anyone will qualify. Had your arms and legs blown off in Afghanistan? Sorry, you're no longer at high risk, nothing for you. Got end stage cancer? You'll snuff it soon, that's not enduring. And for sure they're not going to classify any mental illness short of wholesale dementia as "severe".

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 11:12

Coconutter24 · 16/08/2026 10:55

It’s not about pulling the rug out from under people that are struggling. It does need an overhaul because there are so many people on it that have some how managed to get it but actually don’t need it. Those that need it will still get financial support

Have you ever heard of misdion creep ? Especially whete that bunch if charlatans are concerned.

Except it's not.

His day to day living is completely unaffected.

He was only in pain with limited movement for 6 weeks.

There's this person who's a paraplegic, gets around easily on a super duper chair, owns a market stall and is pregnant and she gets PIP. She has a business, a love life and seems happy! How very dare she claim PIP

I may be mixing reality with fiction i.e. EastEnders.

Fuck me what a miserable post. So if they have X3 kids who are severely autistic and caring for those kids at home, they are doing a job that otherwise would fall to the state.

I just asked Ai how much they'd get in DLA (PIP is after age 16)... They basically get a slightly higher than minimum wage salary for X3 kids at maximum rate of benefit.

You have no idea how they paid for their holiday. Maybe family members helped them. Fcking hell ... knowing a friend with a child like this, I would happily chip in myself if it meant giving that child and parents some happiness. And I am not on a high salary either!

Don't begrudge that family because you're not happy with your life. How about looking at why the 1% aren't paying more?!

I know. What a meanminded ignorant so and so.

Probably, but do you really believe that Reform are going to do that? Other issues apart, experience with local councils has proved that they are utterly chaotic when in power.

Yes, I think you are, and this is known as childishly refusing to believe that some people actually do cheat the system, because it doesn't suit your personal agenda.

You mean like the winter fuel payment for pensioners?

Jellycatspyjamas · 16/08/2026 11:17

BySunnyJadeEagle · 16/08/2026 10:50

But that's not what PIP is supposed to be for.

It's supposed to be for additional costs directly resulting from a disability. Not an income top up.

That's why it isn't means tested.

That “income top up” paid for travel to multiple health appointments, specialist tutoring, replacing things that were damaged and lost directly due to disability, to feed and clothe my kids when my earning capacity was decimated due to the needs created purely by disability.

Additional costs of disability come in many forms, not just the money paid to a private therapist or for specialist aids. The cost of not being able to work is a very real one sustained by many families when caring for a disabled child. Topping up household income is a legitimate use of DLA, evidenced by the eligibility criteria which is that your child needs significantly more care due to disability than a child of the same age not so affected.

I 'm not suggrsting thete isn't a problem that needs sorting regarding jow the economy is managed. I'm sayong dont trust Reform to be the peoplecto sort it because they are duplicitous in their motivations. THEY DONT CARE about Britain.

Yes that’s right, so Labour had a chance to do it and Starmer tried. As a party who cares about people they could have done it without throwing all disabled people under the bus. His backbenchers rebelled and got rid of him, because they are idiots. If they don’t fix it, then Reform will come in and it will be much worse

like it or not, a lot of people support bringing PIP under control including those who voted Labour in the last election

LathkillDale · 16/08/2026 11:17

charliehungerford · 16/08/2026 10:58

That’s part of the issue. No one earning a six figure salary should be entitled to any benefit. Just like you won’t be entitled to child benefit if you earn that level of salary.

See my post earlier, that the government could be putting £24,000 pa into their private pension for them; and posters are focusing on PIP at approximately £10,100 pa maximum, if they got the higher rate for care and mobility?

happybug1234 · 16/08/2026 11:17

TemperanceWest · 16/08/2026 10:59

Highest rate of DLA is £194.60 per week. Pp is talking rubbish.

£194.60 a week that is a huge amount of money can’t you recognise that ??

That’s £778 every 4 weeks! That’s a huge amount of money, and many families have multiple children on this plus all the other UC. They will be taking home more than a lot of high income families working full time in a lot of cases.

If you think that Reform is going to produce a system that works logically, again you are deluded. The objective, frankly, will be to get rid of nasty grasping disabled people so there's all the more money available for them and their mates.
