Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

I don't entirely disagree with that. There have been lots of past threads discussing the pitfalls of how the PIP process is run, and the unnecessary amounts of money being spent, due to the not fit for purpose assessment process.

I agree. I receive PIP. Much of the cost is due to poor assessment, poor initial decision making which lead to challenges, poor secondary decision making, then the tribunal process, which i believe then results in up to 70% of decisions being overturned. Multiple millions if not billions of £ of wastage.

@DiscoRice

Of course in the old days we could have sent the scrounging babies up chimneys. Maybe we could send them down the sewers to sort out fat bergs, or give them to Thames water to plug the leaks

People are claiming PIP for ridiculous issues such as hypermobility and mental health issues such as anxiety. It's an absolute piss take!!! It also does not help those who are anxious etc to be paid to sit at home and wallow in their "disability" FFS people need to see the system for what it is including things such as Motability where family members are added to the cars it is an absolute JOKE.

Of course family members can be added to Motability cars. The person claiming PIP may be unable to drive.

For as long as you refuse to see why a normal, educated, reasonable person might be drawn to Reform, you are never going to get your point across.

Well that would leave an empty thread wouldn't it!

PIP isn't means tested.... its about time it was. We cant keep paying out to everyone! Soon there will be more people on benefits than who are actually contributing!
Our country cannot sustain this level of benefits for much longer. The NHS is on its knees........

You haven’t put any information about what they would replace it with, so you’ve given half a story. They would instead have a Health security allowance but only the ‘severe, enduring and high-risk cases’ would receive cash support. So those that absolutely need it will get financial support. Which is how it should be.

Depends on what they class as severe, enduring and high risk. As with everything - and especially disability benefits, the devil is in the detail. If it’s anything like the PIP assessment the eligibility criteria will be so narrowly drawn as to disqualify those with even a high level of disability. There’s a lot that needs fixing in society. Doing it at the expense of the most vulnerable in it won’t be good if past experience of the governments’ idea of severe disability is anything to go by.

bestcatlife · 16/08/2026 13:54

How will people pay their rent if they rent privately? PIP and the UC health element are used partly to top up the LHA rates which are very low and don’t cover rents in the vast majority of cases
can we house all those which will become homeless?

Owninterpreter · 16/08/2026 13:54

This thread is long and I havent been through it. The pip reform bit doesnt surprise me as thier idea.

But the employer thing. I cant understand at all. It says its based on the netherlands. Id really like to know more about the realism of it.

I’m sorry but educated and reasonable are doing some heavy lifting if you come to the conclusion that Reform are the country’s best hope.

Again, you can sneer and scoff at people all you like, but until you get off your high horse and actually listen to people to understand them, you will never win the argument. No one changes their mind simply from being derided and smeared as thick / racist / whatever.

I know, right? Hypermobility! Pah, it's the new bad back. If you can't work through agonising dislocations, sprains, joint pain, fatigue, digestive problems, dizziness and all the other tiny niggles that go along with it, what is the point of you?

It should be carers then but it isn't it is family members often on an open policy meaning anyone over the age of 17 with a driving licence it is crazy!!!!!! I know my relative has one Lord know how much it costs the tax payer. We don't abuse it but I am sure many families do.

What would be the point of means testing a benefit meant to support people with the extra cost of living with disability ? That doesn’t make any sense at all. Where would you set the threshold, because traditionally the cut off points for benefits are very low, so among other effects, you would have those with moderate disability and low income qualifying for support, while those with more severe and consequently more expensive disability to support, losing out if they come even a few pence above the threshold. It’s a blunt tool and a race to the bottom.

You are very ignorant. You haven’t got a clue.

Some people with hypermobility are unable to walk. Some can’t do things like use a knife.

As per the example I gave in my pp, some with anxiety can be disabled by it. It isn’t about them sitting at home and wallowing. And I say that as someone who is the parent of a teen with very complex need to the extent he is in receipt of children’s continuing care funding and an EOTIS package where he receives 2:1 at all times and 3:1 sometimes.

The ignorance is astounding. Like hypermobility is just being a bit bendy, and anxiety is nothing more than being feeling a bit shaky when someone utters the word "work".

Gosh yes, can't speak ill of pensioners but the disabled are always fair game for some reason. Why is that?

I’m beginning to think that @Chenecinquantecinq is just rage baiting now. Because surely someone who is a carer for a disabled person can’t lack this much empathy and understanding of health conditions.

No what would help is access to decent mental health care at an early stage, to decent education options that don’t cause more harm. By the time someone is so disabled by their mental health they’ve been suffering for years without help. A friend of mine was told by CAMHS her son wasn’t suicidal enough to access their service - how suicidal do you need to be 🤷‍♀️

And private therapies are all good and well, as a therapist I don’t know many in private practice who will work with seriously unwell clients who don’t have a wider support structure around them, because the level of risk is too high for one person to carry. We need functioning mental health care accessible at early stages of illness.

My friend is the named driver on her adult DD's Motability car. She drives it as the DVLA are very reluctant to give someone with severe learning disabilities and CP a licence for some reason and those pesky hospital doctors won't do home visits.

I have Ehlers Danlos myself as do my children. I learnt that resitance training and keeping strong alleviate many issues. That is the problem with the Welfare State including every little issue as a "disability" people stop learning how to help themselves. It needs to change and it will do it is a mathematical certainty as the current system is unsustainable.

LordFarquard · 16/08/2026 13:59

I agree with their proposals.

I know physically disabled people who have extreme needs (they are in a chair and can’t move) yet work full time. I don’t know the details of their support but I imagine they have someone around them all the time to help them dress, eat, drink and get to work etc. I have no problem at all with them receiving a lot of money in disability allowance and I think they are an inspiration.

I also know a man who definitely receives a healthy amount of PIP and works. He’s autistic but can dress himself, start and hold a conversation and get himself to work etc. He is essentially a bit eccentric. I don’t think there’s any reason for him to receive a single penny of PIP.

The problem is those who genuinely need financial support don’t receive enough, yet too many who don’t need the support receive too much.

itsgettingweird · 16/08/2026 14:00

Mrsmch123 · 16/08/2026 10:29

I think the benefit system needs to be looked at. It's not about kicking people when they are down but to make benefits a short stop while people are struggling. Not a lifestyle choice as some people use it.

Benefits - yes.

PIP - no. A disability isn’t something that you need support with as a backstop. It’s lifelong.

My DS cannot be supported out of hereditary spastic paraplegia. It’s a degenerative neurological genetic condition. Benefits support him when he’s looking for work because he’s limited to what he can do.

PIP supports him to fund what he needs because he’s disabled - those disabilities don’t disappear because he’s working.

Well Motability cars should be restricted in use to ONLY those who care for the person however they aren't they often have open insurance policies at a HUGE COST to the tax payer!!!!!
