Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

People who need support get £836 a month. Pip + UC
They get significantly more than that when they claim for their children.

happybug1234 · 16/08/2026 11:21

If it genuinely is for the extra costs associated with being disabled why can’t we have an ‘expense reclaim’ type system, where you would pay for the help you need and reclaim the expense.

I don’t think 2 week all inclusives are what PIP is designed for

How would people cover the cost in advance unless very wealthy? A friend is quadraplegic, he uses his mobility component to pay towards his wheelchair, without it he would never leave his bed, nevermind his home. So your preference would be that only wealthy people could use your proposed system.

When we lived in the UK my husbands disability was costing us on average about £800 a month, when he was single it was more like £1,200ish a month. Both those amounts are as much as a second mortgage, they’re also not unusual figures for someone with a disability. Those figures may be challenging for you as you do seem to have issues with extremely basic maths.

But this will put huge numbers of people out of work and make them unemployable even those who have zero benefits, take away sickness pay for all of us, be an invasion of privacy when we will all have our medical records scrutinised on applying for jobs…so it’s beyond trying to look like the party of cuts (which we’ve had for years under the Tories) it’s just plain stupid.

Were you under the impression that I was trying to justify it?

I don't know why the Govt doesn't get claimants to do something in return for their benefits. All the anti claimant sentiment would go, the claimants would gain some feelings of self-worth. Maybe give them 6 months grace to find a job. After that, you do 22 hours a week socially useful work. Employers would be more inclined to employ someone who has actually been doing something constructive. Younger OAPs could act as overseers to ensure that they actually work.

Yes, it is called giving them a job.
This thread is also about PIP, not jobseekers.

If you think that Reform is going to produce a system that works logically, again you are deluded. The objective, frankly, will be to get rid of nasty grasping disabled people so there's all the more money available for them and their mates.

i didn't say i thought that .
I just couldnt understand how the example given of a limbless person not meeting the criteria given for support.

EvieBB · 16/08/2026 12:46

Howlerhog · 16/08/2026 12:21

Agree. Those relying on PIP should be raging at those that are blagging illnesses, rather than Reform.

I couldn't get pip at the height of my chronic fatigue. I was genuinely ill and couldn't work but the fuckers didn't deem me ill enough because I could get dressed with 15 minutes (minus the shower etc)....sure I could get dressed within 15 minutes and I could take the kids to school ....but after that I would crash and spend the rest of the day recovering from the hour in the morning...until school pickup. It was horrific. I could not hold down even a part time job at that time. It took all my strength just to get the kids to school and back and cook a meal. That was it. Sometimes my mum did pickup as I couldn't manage it. I felt suicidal at times. I felt useless and frustrated. I never claimed a penny in benefits ever though. My husband supported me throughout that time. So believe me there are lots of people unable to claim pip even though they should be eligible. (Thankfully my mum paid for me to see a private functional doctor and I'm 80% improved and can now work part time and I'm so grateful for my improved health and ability to function more normally)🙏🏻
Conversely I do know of a woman who's worked the system and has success claimed pip even though she works full time and is able bodied! (Her cousin works in the pip office and advised her what to write on her claim form in order to be successful)! It's all so unfair.
What I'm saying is that yes there are so many scroungers who have worked the system and blatantly lied and yet there are people who absolutely need that support but don't seem to qualify despite their disability and inability to work. It stinks!!

Because If you don’t get the enhanced rate, you’ll have to return your vehicle.

If you get the enhanced rate, you DON'T have to get a motabillity car with it. You can save and buy a car with it or use it for other forms of transport. You can also get transport passes, if the person needs accompaniment to travel you can get a +1 bus pass so the companion rides free to support them. I don't know about train schemes but I know it works on the trams in Notts.

And than we will get the tax the 'Rich Lot' who believe that if we tax Wealth we could stop all these policies . The only Problem being the Rich will be gone and the only ones to tax will be ''You'. Yes we save the 'benefits' great but the country goes bust because all the people who can do leave, because the UK does not offer 'value' for money and is not fit for purpose that to be an economically business friendly place that is solvent enough to look after its needy . This of course means we need to not look at 'rich' people as Filthy or through green eyes but realise whatever you define as rich is fundamentally needed in this country to function. So the advent of Wealth taxes etc will not help disabled people keep their benefits when the Tax not 'collected' is propping up the dying Pound or the economy .

Change our tax laws. If you make money in the US, you pay tax there. Change a lot of our laws. The UK's economy is worth a lot, even to China. Businesses aren't going to withdraw. If they do, there'll be enough that will stay and pay the tax, because we are big consumers. But there are other things. I didn't like Corbyn, but his ideas about forcing companies to offer a decent number proper full time jobs etc and end the gig economy, was what we needed. I was shocked to find out thise working on the HS2 are self employed, even if they've been there since the beginning and have to do mandatory on site training. That's no sick, paternity, pay and no pension etc.

Simonjt · 16/08/2026 12:48

Howlerhog · 16/08/2026 12:43

I don’t care. We should prioritise paying for afterschool care for disabled children. We need to start normalising work for all parents in this country. Providing afterschool care for disabled kids is part of this. It’s the Scandinavian way. Get citizens working. Remove barriers to them working. Make it really, really odd not to be working. Make not working socially unacceptable. That’s how you fund better public services in the long run.

im glad you agree with me.

Ah the scandinavian way, as someone who lives in a Scandi country in this particular one benefits for people with disabilties are both more generous than those in england and easier to qualify for. So if you want it the scandi way, you would need to significantly increase PIP.

WandsworthMama · 16/08/2026 12:48

idk. we don't have money as a country and quite clearly the term 'disabled' covers so many things now, from genuinely debilitating illnesses to self diagnoses. there should absoluetly be scrutiny into it as we desperately need the cash. my sister-in-law - who has three properties and is a part time GP is able to claim for her mild and self-diagnosed anxiety (she doesn't, but has proved it's possible!). the system is deeply flawed as stands, which doesn't help those in genuine need as creates such skepticism. At least Reform are bringing this into discussion. UK is broke. All PIPs is cash not given to other v worthy causes.

Gateway to lots of other resources and benefits.

Social housing, housing benefit, council tax benefit, carers allowance, increased UC, discounts on days out, different funding schemes in education and work. NO benefit cap if you have a dependent child on DLA.

There have been several threads on MN with OPs making the equivalent of 70k a year salaries just in benefits because they had a child in receipt of DLA and were in high-cost rentals.

A poster recently who had a DH earning 67k a year and they were receiving over 2k a month in benefits with a disabled DC and adapted social housing and the OP wanted more as wanted to register for carers allowance looking after her MIL.

That's why it's a trap. Several hundred a month may not be enough to live on if claiming PIP but the extras it can help entitled people to means they're reliant on it and have no incentive to get into work or get better because once they're not receiving it, lots of other benefits fall away.

When David Cameron the multimillionaire was PM he was claiming DLA for his severely disabled child who later sadly died because he said it gave access to other things they needed. Including the 4 nappies he claimed per day from the NHS.

David Cameron
was right though DLA does open doors to other services not just NHS nappies
His son was had profound and multiple disabillties and had a short life wether multimillionaire or an office cleaner
Looking after a child with those kinds of disabiillities is going to be hard
And he died when he was just six which is heartbreaking.

Every child has a right to an education. The government should supply that education and afterschool clubs to allow every parent to work, regardless of the child’s health needs.

All well and good saying that. My youngest couldn’t access childcare right now due to his medical needs and several settings refusing to accommodate them, the same is generally the case for after school care when other young children have the same condition.

If we stopped funding all the scroungers that are coming over the Channel we might have some spare cash to spend on our own people.

The Channel Crossing Crisis has placed an enormous burden on the asylum system. In May 2025, the National Audit Office produced a report suggesting that the asylum system is likely to cost over £15bn over ten years.

Then why aren't the numbers of jobs created that need to process people and keep them here to work if elegible to stay or return them if not. Surely that would create more workers all paying taxes.

Leave pensioners alone. Or should they go and work in the fields for their pensions until they drop down dead. I wonder if their next fantastically well worked out policy will be that everyone over the age of 65 should be pushed off a cliff.

im glad you agree with me.

The cost of specialist after school care would far exceed the cost of supporting parents to care for their children. It would far exceed the tax receipts from parents then able to work. If it was economical to provide, it would already be in place. Absolutely essential supports for disabled people have already been cut to the bone because of the cost of providing it.

The reality is providing care of whatever kind on a formal basis is expensive, much more expensive than the benefits paid to disabled people and their carers. The difference is you can easily calculate how much someone receives in benefits because the rates are there to be seen. You don’t see the costs of providing care, because they aren’t made public.

If I gave you the choice of paying a parent £400/month in DLA that allowed them to care for their child at home, or paying £12k for a care package for their child for the same period, you’d chose the care package, from the principle that everyone should work?

redange · 16/08/2026 12:53

No but the the patient can be referred to a mental health professional who is able to to a proper mental health assesment.

Clearly you have never read "On being Sane in Insane Places" Rosenhan (1973). Psychiatrists have nothing to go on but their instinct. There is no objective test for depression or anxiety. Just a few questionnaires people fill in.
