Reform want to cut PIP

1000 replies

Daygloboo · 16/08/2026 09:15

Reform want to cut benefits for disabled people. They want businesses to pay more towards sickness etc. I find it repulsive that they want to do this. When will people understand that they are a bunch of self interested sharks who want to make a stack of dosh for themselves while in govt and that they font give a damn about anyone in need. Why cant the most vulnerable ppl who vote for them see thus. It's astonishing. It's ac joke. I eish ppl who get what Reform.iscreally about and how it manipulates would make sn extra effort to tslk to.ppl who dont seem to get it.

Reform will never get in so don’t worry about it.

Yes I have someone around me that is entitled to PIP, it has recently been cut slightly because his wife is now earning more.

The idea that some people who receive PUP are not ‘severe’ is bith unrealistic and abhoreant tbh

Is it really? Because we’ve already read on here someone saying that their ex claims it after an illness but that illness now has absolutely no effect on his life now, he just likes the extra income! So no it’s not unrealistic that some people are not severe. People like that guy don’t deserve PIP. Should we just keep handing it out to frauds so that it doesn’t disrupt anyone else’s claim? Or do we try find a way to make sure only those that need it get it

Then they cannot be getting pip. Pip has no relation to how much you earn or how much your partner earns. Pip is never cut like that. There are only two standard payments, nothing in between.

Since when is a maximum of £770 odd every 4 weeks anything like the equivalent to a well paid full time job?

Minimum wage is almost 2,100, so almost 3 times more than the maximum PIP payment, which most claimants are not even eligible for.

This

And also idea it is easy to get. I have seen friends with disabled kids have to fight for their child to get what they need. The paperwork, the appeals the admin is a full time job.

And on a related point I am a line manager and one of my staff waited months for an access to work bid which was awarded. But the stodginess of that process and the work that person has to do after to enact and spend that money given their disability is unbelievable. That needs sorting too

People will always cheat every system. There will be undeserving cases. I know of one. But ai still want benefits to be there for people who need then so I accept that minority. Like Farage has cheated with the funding, like some people dodge tax, yet some of that people actually applaud. Bue we all pay for that too somewhere down the line.

What world do we want to live in? One that is empathetic and looks after people or one that climbs over the bodies literally and metaphorically?

Anybody who has exaggerated a severity of condition or pretended to have one, or convinced themselves they do and convinced others they do in order to claim disability benefits have a hand in this proposal from Reform.

They are of the view it seems that too many people are claiming disability benefits. And they don’t buy it. The numbers. They don’t believe all of the claimants.

So their proposal is to get rid of it for everyone. Including those who do rely on it.
So anyone who has exaggerated just a teeny bit to get a higher rate etc, think on that.

This is Reform. Who may not or may not get into power. But if they did would have no qualms about enacting this policy.

Agree. Those relying on PIP should be raging at those that are blagging illnesses, rather than Reform.

I'm not proposing anything.

I'm saying the benefit is designed for additional costs, not as extra income.

It isn't a compensation scheme that the tax payers pay to anyone with a disability or who has a child with a disability.

If you couldn't work then you'd have to apply for an out of work benefit.

That's one of the reasons Reform and every other government want to change PIP and DLA. Because it's not fit for purpose for many reasons and because many people are using it not for the purpose it's granted.

If you couldn't work then you'd have to apply for an out of work benefit.

Which would be what exactly? Because UC would require work, JSA would require looking for work and ESA wouldn’t apply if it’s not your disability.

It's like they are working together. Burnham says he will take steps to reform PIP. Jennrick comes out with something pretty extreme. Then the backbenchers can say we'll support the Burnham compromise as it's not as a bad a what the others are suggesting.

Yes its the £15 Billion Cut not the £50 Billion cut . The Country needs to save money economic growth and cheap energy and a approach that appreciates we are a not a tier 1 nation now. Hence, we cannot afford a singe pound on overseas aid. We can not afford countless Billons on illegal immigrants or even a pound if we are cutting payments from people in Wheelchairs how can you fund any one not 'British'.

What compensation did I get?

My loss of earning far exceeded any DLA awarded. Working part time my household income was too high for UC, which is fair enough. DLA helped to fill the gap, it didn’t compensate for anything.

cfsandhg · 16/08/2026 12:23

Where is their plan for SAHP then if they are also looking at DLA for children because if they do that they need to accept that a LOT of parents won’t be able to work - and they’ll need more money.

Unless of course they are going to sort out waiting times for assessment for ND, and fund SEN nurseries.

The notability scheme is crap. We advised our disabled daughter not to have it. As an aside how do you know all these people are on enhanced pip?

IME they're like vegans, or marathon runners - they will tell you repeatedly.

If a patient goes to GP and complains of anxiety they often would get put on meds. Over time if they have complaind of this enough the GP states patient has a history of anxiety and is on meds. That is medical evidence. A blood test or x-ray can't be used to diagnose a lot of MH issues like anxiety or depression.

No but the the patient can be referred to a mental health professional who is able to to a proper mental health assesment.

I would be surprised too. But the election is a long way away. And Reform came worryingly second in an awful lot of places. And second by some small margins too. Hence why we now have Andy B and not Starmer any longer.

DiscoRice · 16/08/2026 12:26

caringcarer · 16/08/2026 12:11

I agree UC is to cover living cost and PIP to cover additional cost of disability but if a person is only getting £30 a week disability their disability most be minimal. £30 is the cost of the lower level mobility. If they had other disabilities they would be on a higher level. It's not the job of UC to cover more than basics. At the moment a person can claim PIP for additional cost of their disability then if on UC claim health element too. So they are effectively been paid twice for having a disability. It's stuff like this that has to stop.

They are not being paid twice for the same thing! AGAIN, UC and PIP are for DIFFERENT things.
The government are proposing the exact opposite to what you are - that you have to be on PIP to get the health element of UC. If they thought your idea was going to save money, then they would have said it had to be one or the other, which makes zero sense.

Simonjt · 16/08/2026 12:27

Ah, so Farage has realised being a cunt doesn’t count as a disability

That’s not how it works. PIP is allocated on support needs not diagnosis and you need to have strong evidence re those support needs. How are you going to provide that if you don’t have any? On top of that meds will be treating whatever you’ve gone to the GP for so will be evidence against support needs.

Passaggressfedup · 16/08/2026 12:29

I would never vote but it's about time one government start tackling disability benefits and the significant increase in applications each year.

There are thousands of people who can work part time but not full time with chronic illness/disability. PIP helps them get to work with taxis or helps with mobility schemes to get them a car. Otherwise people would be stuck at home
Do we actually know the percentage of people who claim pip who are still at work and rely on taxis to get there? Or who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a car?

Versus people who were not working when they applied and still not working?

So care to tell us how businesses being forced to pay the first 2 years of sickness is going to help? So none of us can go off sick.Ive never claimed sick pay and have been paying taxes my whole life. Why shouldn’t I have help from the state if I go off long term sick? How is this not going to mean companies are going to simply discriminate when employing and avoid anybody with a history of ill health or who fits a demographic that might mean more likelihood of ill health?

It’s hysterically stupid.

I feel like this is the bit that'll do for them.

Ensuring that no one with a disability or chronic illness will ever be able to get a job is self evidently stupid even to potentail Reform voters.

BlueRedCat · 16/08/2026 12:31

I haven’t read all the replies but when I see discussions like this I always ask if you were starting from scratch, with a blank sheet of paper. No one is claiming anything right now. There are zero systems in place. The economy is in the state it is now, barely growing with little to no chance of it recovering in the next 10 years, what would be the system you would put in? How would it look? Should there be a pot and when it’s gone it’s gone? should people take out personal insurance for sickness? Should pregnant women take insurance out for their children when pregnant? I don’t honestly know but what we have now isn’t working and the mental burden on the people who have to go to work is becoming a big issue.

Every child has a right to an education. The government should supply that education and afterschool clubs to allow every parent to work, regardless of the child’s health needs.

Yeah and we all know what that means. It's just an excuse to pull the rug out from ppl who are struggling. It is such hypocrisy. Ppl allegedly taking millions for themselves in bungs while wishing to stop meagre amounts to support the most vulnerable. And all disguised as sensible fair policies . You must think we all came down in the last rain shower. And I cant imagine any of them wanting to put in the hard yards if they got into office. They'd all be wanting to swan off to other places securing deals that would make life even easier for billionaires while letting everybody else starve. Yuck.

Hear bloody hear!

So by your logic, rather than use part of my DCs DLA to fill the gap in income caused by me needing to reduce my hours, because you don’t think that’s a legitimate use of the money, I should instead stop working completely, claim UC to cover my household costs and ring fence DLA for costs directly related to my DCs disability?

Im very glad you’re not in charge of economic policy if you think that’s better than me working as far as possible, and bridging the gap with DLA where needed.

redange · 16/08/2026 12:32

The problem being if Labour stay in the country will be an Economic basket and a Totalitarian Socialist State within the next three years .. We are in a bit of a pickle and Labour are no fans of the disabled and like many on here think the 'Pensioners' are loaded...

It is no coincidence that Reform waited until the by-election was over to announce this.

I think they're actually scared they might get elected. It's going to be an interesting few years.

Shatenoeuf · 16/08/2026 12:33

Most people not in work & receiving pip are also getting other benefits eg UC all tax free, it can add up to the equivalent of much more than most people receive after tax working in a median wage job.

redange · 16/08/2026 12:33
