AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Is that you, Nigel?

Does this still work? Even the leafy Lib Dem voting Piddington is no thanks, perhaps you’d be the 4% there who say yes pls.

I cannot understand why no pm has addressed the issue of the amount of men illegally coming to the UK, undocumented and we have no idea who they are. Apparently it makes you a racist to say you don’t want to house illegal immigrants. We shouldn’t have to house anyone coming here illegally, they weren’t asked to come they’ve chosen to make their way to the UK and we are then expected to house them take care of them and foot the bill. No, I don’t want to we can’t say all of them are seeking asylum from war torn countries. If you’re arriving illegally they should be returned to their country. We should have a zero tolerance for illegal boat arrivals and we shouldn’t have to pay for them. The UK seems to be a soft touch and the government want to ignore the issue.

Your post is too simplistic.

People who cross on small boats often destroy their documents so it is hard to know what their country of origin is. So where would you 'return them to' in this situation? you can't just pick a country on the map and dump them there...

Also many countries also simply refuse to take these people back.

Rights to freedom from persecution (ie asylum) should stay.

Small boaters aren’t persecuted. They’re illegal immigrants with no claim for refugee status.

If you’re an asylum seeker from Syria how are you going to claim asylum in the UK? It’s impossible unless you travel over on a small boat.

He has a very tight political tightrope to walk. He has to please ‘middle England’ (people who are pretty much politically central) and also please the backbenchers who control his political career. It’s a poisoned chalice for sure.

I hope he’ll have the guts to reform the system but there’s no doubt, it’s extremely complicated.

Firstly, ‘they’ are actual people who presumably want a better life. If it were you or me we’d probably do the same thing. However, that doesn’t mean the UK should have an open door policy - we don’t have the money or infrastructure to do that. Plus statistically, those who arrive illegally typically don’t contribute massively to the economy. It’s often the reverse.

For me, I’d like to see huge reform of the immigration system as a whole. Lower the threshold for legal entry by creating space for unskilled workers to fill some of our many vacancies and then restrict entry (or do a very quick turnaround) for those who use people smugglers. Easier said than done I know.

I am a fan of a diverse, multi cultural society but I can’t personally just hop on a boat and wander into any country I want and expect to access all their benefits. And nor should anyone be able to do this in the U.K. either. Come to work - great, you’re welcome! Come through the back door to prop up the cash in hand/grey economy while securing housing/benefits - sorry, but no.

Or course he is ignoring it the same way I’m ignoring cleaning the oven.

It’s a hassle and messy and hard to do so I keep putting it off.

A stupid argument. You are not being paid to clean your oven. This is one of the publics (who pay AB) top priorities so start addressing it rather than wasting time telling us your fave crisps etc.

We could flatly refuse visas to any citizens of countries that refuse to take back their immigrants. The Eritreans PMs wife wants a shopping trip to the UK? Take back your immigrants first.

Give him chance. Parliament is in recess

It hasn't stopped him turning it from an immigration in issue into a class issue. Clever, cynical, move.

TheSmallAssassin · 16/08/2026 08:36

I think there are much more important issues than immigration, so neither of your options works for me.

Syrians aren’t eligible for refugee status at the moment.

Was it restore who said they would ship them back to France - and would take on the French over it. Sounds extreme but their police/soldiers (that we are paying millions to to stop this) stand by and watch as the boats leave - is it any worse that our soldiers / private company stand by while they are launched back. Somehow French can do whatever but we can't- and don't mention Brexit as that has no relevance in fact it should make it easier for us to send them back.
It does astound me that MPs can witter and whinge avout this as if it's nothing too bad, how can allowing millions of people the large majority of them male (that in itself is so disrupting to society) into a country foundering on huge debt and a burgeoning population and then get angry at anyone pointing out the problems and call it racism.

Reform said this, it’s absolutely unworkable legally and they know it. But they say it because people will believe it can happen, it can’t, not unless we really want to kick things off with our closest neighbours anyway.

You can gain entry legally on a visitor or student visa and then apply then but agree, that it’s actually very hard to even get those visas especially if you’re from a country at war. The quickest route is clearly to pay a people smuggler and for me at least, that’s why the whole system needs reform
(with a small r, not Reform the party!!)

If you’re an asylum seeker from Syria how are you going to claim asylum in the UK? It’s impossible unless you travel over on a small boat.

This needs fixing, but it won't stop the boats because over half the people on the boats now don't get their claims approved and it would be unlikely that even that many would be approved if they were still in their home country and had to produce some proof that they were actually gay and at risk from being gay, for example. So all those people who would be refused by the legal route will still be customers for the traffickers, we'll just have the legal route on top.

Howlerhog · 16/08/2026 08:41

My point exactly. So you may be threatened by a group of thugs in Syria, wanting to claim asylum, cannot get to the UK legally also do so on a boat. The UK cannot just decide to hear no asylum claims from a certain country. You could CLAIM asylum from the US if you wanted. The UK is not hearing claims unless your feet are on UK soil so come here illegally you must.

Mauro711 · 16/08/2026 08:42

So you want little children who have fled horrible situations detained for, usually, over a year? No right to education, outside air, running through a field etc. I would imagine that would violate international human rights.

Quine0nline · 16/08/2026 08:42

Politicians are shit scared of putting foreign people in a camp/detention centre/holding place as the term "concentration camp' will be bandied about by their opponents, opportunistic media sources and those with an ill will.

The fact that people often coming from repressive regimes, where the dominant culture advocates misogyny, homophobia and the persecution of those with different ideals do not seem to have any exposure to "no darling, we don't throw gays off the roof today", "no Hun you cannot expect Lucy to shag you because you want it and she's exposing her ankles".

Exactly when asylum seekers are planted in an area there is a combined action by the law enforcement, local authorities, local media and housing association to any form of criticism. I saw this in Rothesay when approved refugee families (ten of them) were housed in a holiday island on the Clyde coast. They were refugees from Syria and the state action before they arrived was clearly " criticise or express reasonable dissent and we will call the police, end your tenancy accuse you of racism". This was from the council, the local newspapers editor and the Scottish government as well as housing associations.

It’s not top priority whilst there are more urgent needs. His first 60 days have been marked by wildfires and they have to try to ensure that we will not run out of water and that there will be food in the shops this winter.

If you mean you’d like legal routes look at the recent event in Ceuta for demand.

If you put out that getting one UK is doable from other countries how would you not be overwhelmed with similar numbers and more?

DisappearingGirl · 16/08/2026 08:48

I think everyone would like to address the asylum / small boats situation but the reality is, it's really difficult.

The Tories couldn't do much to solve it, neither can Labour, and Reform would not be able to either.

Not saying we shouldn't try but the idea that Reform would just come in and easily solve it is fantasy. Dealing with it will be difficult and will take time and money.

billysboy · 16/08/2026 08:49

Perhaps we should get an emergency phone alert every time a small boat arrives

the country is a mess and living beyond its means , most families understand at that point there needs to be some cutbacks and saving within the household and some growth or taking on some extra work to earn extra income
I don’t think it should be that hard

It’s basic maintenance of my home.

The PM’s role is to keep and maintain our shared home. He keeps putting it off because it’s an unpleasant task.

Being paid is not relevant to anything.

Although he’s pretty much saying it’s a burden to be shared. A move on from the usual from Labour.

I’m not sure it’ll help him politically.

It was being shared though. One of the hotels recently emptied was the Chimney House, a popular high quality wedding and business meeting hotel right near the M6 J17 in the heart of leafy Cheshire countryside. The two towns on the bus route that passes the door which the migrants use are affluent market towns. Another I saw first hand was a Holiday Inn in Sheffield right next door to a very up market 4 star.

HMOs are cheaper in poorer areas so if he's planning on spreading those around he's going to be increasing the costs to tax payers already on minimum wage.

He's saying it's a burden to be shared to focus attention from stopping it happening onto a class divide.

Clever and cynical.

Was the bus price cap a top priority?

Were subscriptions a top priority?

Was his holiday a top priority?
