AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Give him chance. Parliament is in recess

But we can have a headless Cobra meeting about wildfires? Not that that isn’t serious.

To be fair, that is an example of an extreme and pressing matter because of the demand on firefighters, and concerns about wildfires spreading.

Well I’m sick of hearing about it and maybe he doesn’t want to centre his entire government around it. He’d rather tackle the issues most regular people worry about rather than ones the toxic media stir up to create divisions.

BrinkWomanship · 16/08/2026 08:03

Unfortunately one of his first addresses as PM was actually about Gaza. There was no need for it. 1 there was no genocide in Gaza. 2 there has been a ceasefire for 10 months so far. 3 our PM (whoever holds the post) has naff all to do with it. Id like the pot holes fixed in our country. I’ve seen better roads in third world countries than the local ones in my area.

Was it? I missed that. I listened to his speech outside no10 which was about homelessness and rebuilding the industrial wastelands etc, which I thought was good. Did he mention Gaza? Happy to be corrected if he did.

You're living in cloud cuckoo land if you really believe that.

Also, very problematic, and almost certainly invoking all manner of legal disputes.
Who has the nerve?

Reform probably has the nerve, but are hopelessly naive about the situation. It reminds me of when Trump said he’d have the Ukraine/Russia war settled in 24 hours. They’ll make a complete hash of things and then try to deflect responsibility elsewhere.

He didn't in that speech.

Fair point. Also when Trump thought he'd deal with Iran in a couple of days.
Perhaps it's time to look at what Denmark is doing.

I agree Reform has nothing to lose. Burnham's got a fine line because as one poster has shown on here, his many voters want the asylum issue to be buried.

Burnham is able to take his time and set the agenda to topics he prefers while parliament is in recess. We will have the measure of him soon enough.

Yes, I think that's fair enough.

I cannot understand why no pm has addressed the issue of the amount of men illegally coming to the UK, undocumented and we have no idea who they are. Apparently it makes you a racist to say you don’t want to house illegal immigrants. We shouldn’t have to house anyone coming here illegally, they weren’t asked to come they’ve chosen to make their way to the UK and we are then expected to house them take care of them and foot the bill. No, I don’t want to we can’t say all of them are seeking asylum from war torn countries. If you’re arriving illegally they should be returned to their country. We should have a zero tolerance for illegal boat arrivals and we shouldn’t have to pay for them. The UK seems to be a soft touch and the government want to ignore the issue.

He should capitalise on people who feel like this and use their areas rather than places that protest, eg Piddington is the latest.

On the op he’ll find it tough over time, if it keeps increasing.

Surely you’re not serious? What on earth has Palestine got to do with the UK? What on earth can the UK do about Palestine, even if it did prioritise Palestine?

Honestly, I’m so sick of all of the people in the UK trotting out banal, virtue signalling gibberish because someone told than it’s the thing to do, without thinking through whether what they are saying holds water intellectually. See also people that state ‘JK Rowling is transphobic’ without being able to name one transphobic thing she’s said or done.

Yes, the chanting of the mantras reminds me of "Mustapha Leake".

seawitchandgarden2 · 16/08/2026 08:26

He just came into power and Parliament is in recess so wait and see.

However I do think that moving asylum seekers around is not the solution.
We need to stop illegal crossings in the first place and be better/quicker at processing legal applications.

Frankly the whole thing is a mess and neither the Tories or Starmer after them did anything to address the situation of illegal immigration and small boats in a rational and effective manner.

So BurnHam has years of incompetence to try to correct and it is reasonable to say it will take a while to improve.

Immigration overall is down by the way, probably also because the UK is no longer such an attractive option with the high cost of living, less job vacancies, Brexit and a more hostile attitude to all migrants, legal or not.

Had a look. but where is the specific part about "sending them home" ?

Is it not better to present a case like this ?

Here is the part of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights that apply. The UK is a signatory to this and ratified it in 1951. So are legally bound by it.

"Article 14

  1. Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
  2. This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations."

I clipped that from here :

OHCHR | Universal Declaration of Human Rights - English

There is also the 1951 UN 1951 Refugee convention. The UK also ratified this in 1951, so are legally bound by it. There is a link to the full text to that convention in the UN article below. No need to quote from it really, because for this, the article 14 above is enough.

The 1951 Refugee Convention | UNHCR

I can't see from that Reform manifesto link you posted about how Reform proposes getting around this.

People always seem to forget, we are bound by international law and can't just 'send them home'.

What’s your point? As ‘mums’ should we be totally unconcerned by the numbers of undocumented single young men coming here from countries where women are treated like dirt? Married off at 12? Where rape is commonplace?

If you have a reason why we shouldn’t be concerned, please do let us know.

Supersimkin7 · 16/08/2026 08:32

Rights to freedom from persecution (ie asylum) should stay.

Small boaters aren’t persecuted. They’re illegal immigrants with no claim for refugee status.

Edited

Immigration is down because the Tories made it harder for international students to get visas. And the result is many unis are becoming bankrupt. Well done, idiots!
