To think my neighbour is selfish tw*t for lighting a fire

Ok so how many people, after receiving a government alert about wild fires asking them not to have fires in their garden, would then in fact go against that and light a big F off fire in their garden, well that would be my next door neighbour! We all live in close proximity in terraced houses and my neighbour thinks it’s a good idea to light a fire. The fact the fire is (for now) contained in a make shift fire pit makes no difference, I mean it’s twa**ish behaviour right?

He will also be posting on FB about how well he remembers the summer of 1976, wildfires used to be called controlled burning and bemoaning the nanny state. Attention-seeking twat.

My local police FB page have posted saying not to call them to report people having a BBQ.

My neighbour did the same, and I went across to try to speak to him. They were completely dismissive and rude. I did threaten to call the police.
He is very thick though, probably genuinely too thick to realise the danger he is putting us all in.

Please don’t call the fire brigade to report things like this. I get why you’d want to but they’re already overstretched - our local fire service have just put out a message to ask people to stop calling them to report BBQs since the alert.

People are just... idiots. Have just seen someone walk past our house, flicking his cigarette lighter and lighting a cigarette, then flicking ash, which was glowing, carelessly towards the very dry grass and vegetation at the side of the road!! Without even a second thought!

Which tells us there are still a lot of people going ahead with BBQs even after the warning. So depressing.

It might only be advisory but i think the nationwide government alert will make it very very easy for the CPS to charge anyone 'accidently' loosing control of a fire with arson reckless to whether life endangered which carries up to life imprisonment, so you need to be very very confident that you can contain the fire if you are going to have one, because if you don't contain it you're off to prison!

No, you cant always contain fire. One spark from a fire is all it takes. The advice is to avoid any activity that could start a fire.

To be fair the warning explicitly chose not to say anything about barbecues, and so it’s not an unreasonable assumption to think there is no issue with having a BBQ.

They could very easily have said “including avoiding barbecues”.

I have lost family members who were volunteer fire fighters here in Australia. Your neighbours are the worst. Can you call the police for this? (We can when we have fire bans)

The alert said to avoid disposable barbecues. As soon as I saw the alert my cynical side thought that some numpties will now go out of their way to do something involving fire.
