I peeked, as I did in 1999 and I’m still here. I used a pinhole in a bit of card and then my hands cupped over my face with a tiny gap - which was actually the best view. I also took a dozen photos on my phone which turned out great - despite all the dire warnings about exploding iPhones and burned out batteries.

I was so hoping to hear about your health problems.

Nasty @Tryanalogue

OhFFS26 · 12/08/2026 22:27

So, you're worried you might go blind and are hoping for others to be in the same boat?

I mean, yes you might go blind, it's a thing.

Depends how long you stupidly peeked for really.

I accidentally looked at it for about 2 seconds and now my eyes are sore ☹️ guess who’s spiralling!

Me too! Are our eyes damaged 😬 actually being serious as I have anxiety

CornishTiger · 12/08/2026 22:28

I full on looked with proper eclipse glasses. Not as good as 1999 obviously but still amazing. View was better than 99 too.

Thegirlwhowent · 12/08/2026 22:33

My pinhole box thing was useless but the colander was better.

🤣🤣🤣 how long you grounded for

She says the long term damage I’ve done to myself is punishment enough. Phew!

Didn’t look at sun directly but did look at screen on phone. Took some pictures which didn’t show anything except I later noticed on a few I had what I now know is called lens flare and shows what was left of the sun!

Wow, that's unnecessarily nasty.

JaceLancs · 12/08/2026 22:38

I was underwhelmed compared to last time in 1999
Then watched it with DC on top of South Downs looking out to sea (we lived in Brighton at the time) no fancy specs but DP had plenty of welding masks
Tonight went to Lytham st Anne’s on the lawns with a lot of others but just wasn’t as good

Thegirlwhowent · 12/08/2026 22:38

@fivepenny Love your dramatic photo!

frozendaisy · 12/08/2026 22:40

Under totality
So absolutely fine to peek during that time
It was magical

During which time?

BillyDidIt · 12/08/2026 22:46

I wonder if MN do an audio version? 🤔 Otherwise that 2 second glance (2 or 3 times) (call me Eve)! Wouldn't have been worth it. How else would I entertain myself without being able to read the ranting!! 😂

Calliopespa · 12/08/2026 22:48

ManipulativeLiar · 12/08/2026 20:32

Now, THAT is funny 🤣

Is it? I was taken aback at how nasty that and a couple of other comments on this thread have been.

I expect quite a few peekers are lurking and have bottled up anxiety.

I think for those who looked for a second, it probably won't add up to the damage done over many years of getting the sun directly in your eyes when driving etc.

I saw several people looking (not peeking) and almost did a community service shout out to stop! But didn't. Maybe I should have!

Why would you say something so nasty?

Neuronimo · 12/08/2026 22:55

I was so busy lecturing Ds, that I looked to make sure that he wasn't looking in the direction... twice. Keeping fingers crossed as it was less than a second.

CJP45 · 12/08/2026 22:58

No peeking from me 😇

Snackccident · 12/08/2026 22:58

We decided to drive up to Dartmoor to watch it (as did half of Devon) and everyone was sat with the glasses on staring for ages. Others had fancy cameras and telescopes. From the absolute chaos that happened on the roads as we left there's a good chance a few people did actually go blind.

FindingNeverland28 · 12/08/2026 22:59

Hubby peeked and he’s gone to work his night shift seeing spots and with a cracking headache. Could be a coincidence though.

Retina damage is typically painless. You're probably alright if it was just 2 seconds.

soddingspiderseason · 12/08/2026 23:05

Day of the triffids for those who peeked.
