Not a huge fan of Labour I must say, but this is well overdue!

But what exactly do you mean by “men from third world countries”, and where are the UK per capita rape statistics that prove your claim?

Cologne was horrific. Nobody is denying what happened to those women. But a mass sexual assault in Germany on New Year's Eve 2015 doesn't establish the rape rate of millions of people from developing countries, nor does it establish the rape rate of migrants or asylum seekers in Britain.

If you're making a per capita claim, you need actual data the number of offenders in the group, the size and demographic make up of that population, and a genuinely comparable rate for the rest of the population. Look at Cologne isn't a per capita statistic.

In fact, the ONS has explicitly said it doesn't hold crime statistics broken down by asylum seeker or migrant status. So where is your figure coming from?

And while we're discussing sexual violence, the latest ONS evidence shows victims of rape or assault by penetration were considerably more likely to report that the perpetrator was a partner or ex partner than a stranger.

Sexual violence is an enormous problem and women deserve better than having their experiences turned into ammunition for an immigration argument. If the evidence shows a particular group presents a greater risk, then show the evidence and let's discuss it. But nationality, immigration status and third world countries aren't interchangeable categories, and Cologne isn't a statistic for Britain.

Another one wanting equal opportunity for global rapists in Britain.

Do people really not think a man from a 3rd world misogynistic nation is more likely to commit a SA/SH compared to a western man raised in a civilised country?

I think that's a very cynical thing to say about people fleeing persecution and looking for a better life from themselves. The assumption is that they will integrate and find themselves a partner from the local area, I know a lot of young British women will benefit from an expansion in the dating market. All I had to choose from when I was young was white British men!

Yes a genuine answer as if you think Starmer did something different to Burnham I’m wondering what that is.

I don't think Burnham has done much different to Starmer so far.
I was really sceptical about the "smash the gangs" rhetoric at first. But if (and it's a big if) the trend continues down then that does suggest that it is working. Even the reports of many more migrants now being sent per boat suggests a change in tactics which will be happening for a reason. It might suggest the attempts to get Germany to restrict the availability of the boats is working for example. But actually limiting the ability of the criminal gangs (and there are some very nasty people involved) from operating is going to be complicated, and difficult and need to be assessed over a long period as the criminals can change tactics too and find new ways to evade attention etc. And also needs international cooperation which was easier when we were in the EU but hopefully not impossible outside it.

As far as I know Burnham hasn't changed course on this but because it's a long term thing which needs long term attention it isn't a case of "Starmer smashed the gangs. End of problem".

Hungary and Poland are a lot safer for women than the UK. Think about why

Because their government doesn’t give a shit
they put the people first and take virtually no immigrants

they wouldn’t allow a super mosque to be built and people know that if they try to rush the border they will get shot at

suburburban · Yesterday 11:05

Yes and how are they going to work in the UK if they are not learning the language supposedly paying for our pensions, what a cheek and entitlement they have (fathers)

DebbieSavage · Yesterday 11:05

Yes I heard that tragic story. But that doesn't paint a whole picture. There is no evidence to suggest you are in any more danger from a man who recently came to the country from Afghanistan than you are from a man called Dave who grew up in Barnsley. People are people. There are good and bad in all. Please don't buy into nationalist narratives.

The only reason they want to come to Britain is because they think the streets are paved with gold. Women in the UK have been raped and sexually assaulted by these men and there’s plenty of videos on the internet of women showing that they’re being followed by them. School girls also feel unsafe walking around their local area. it’s not a case of ‘British women flattering themselves’ how fucking dare you

You're conflating two completely different things. Nobody is suggesting that women who have been raped, sexually assaulted or followed are “flattering themselves”. Those experiences are serious and frightening, regardless of who the perpetrator is.

The “flattering yourselves” comment was directed specifically at the suggestion that these men are coming to Britain because they want British women. Where is the evidence for that being their motivation?

Saying there are videos online of migrant men following women, or pointing to crimes committed by individual migrant men, doesn't establish why thousands of completely different people cross the Channel. You cannot attribute the actions or motives of some individuals to an entire group.

Women and schoolgirls absolutely deserve to feel safe in Britain. But their safety is far too important to be reduced to an immigration talking point. Sexual violence and harassment existed long before the small boats, and condemning it shouldn't depend on the nationality of the man responsible.

Aka dump large groups of people in isolated rural areas with zero resources.

This is exactly what they've been doing, but the majority of people who live in the countryside are working class, especially in Wales.

I would think they would be more likely to instinctively.
But the countries with some of the worst rates of violence against women and of the scale swxual violence also include Russia for instance. Russia doesn't restrict women's freedom as much as Afghanistan but the rates of DV and attitudes towards DV are go smacking. As is the sheer number of soldiers willing to rape babies and girls etc.

But I know Russians in the UK who aren't like that. You have people like Konstantin Kissin who, while I don't agree with his policies, I wouldn't want to see thrown out of the country because of Russians being disproportionarely violent rapist thugs. So maybe there is something more going on than just the overall offending rates in a country directly impacting the offending rates of immigrants from that country. Maybe the types of people leaving matters as well?

It's not as simple as it should be basically.

@DebbieSavage - no people are not people. People are heavily influenced by trauma and background and education and familial values. Now the Left will account for aggravating factors and trauma and poverty and then proclaim that all things accounted for, the chances are the same.
The right will not want to take those factors into account. And only look at the outcome and therein lies the difference.

Looking at the Government poll on immigration linked above, it is pretty clear that the vast majority of the public (both Remain and Leave) do not want any migrant criminals here, whether violent or not, and that they are also both equally concerned about level of skills brought to the table (both white and blue collar) and are keen to know language skills.
It is best to focus on the points the vast majority agree on and the Government has a duty to the population to deliver on that.
I would have a complete zero tolerance on any crime committed for a start.

suburburban · Yesterday 11:13

Shitshowpolitics · Yesterday 10:31

It’s amazing how often the conversation about “the boats” completely ignores Britain’s own history. Britain spent centuries travelling across the world, colonising countries, controlling their people and extracting their resources. We created political, economic and cultural connections with huge parts of the world that still exist today.

Then look at Windrush. People from the Caribbean came to the so-called mother country, many as British subjects, and helped rebuild post-war Britain. They worked in our NHS, transport system and industries, only to face horrendous racism and discrimination. Decades later, some were even wrongly treated as illegal immigrants, detained and removed from the very country they had every right to call home.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't control our borders or deal with dangerous Channel crossings. We absolutely should. But this idea that Britain has always existed as some isolated little island that the rest of the world suddenly decided to descend upon is historically ridiculous.

For centuries Britain went out into the world. Now people act completely bewildered that some of the world comes to Britain. And as for the suggestion elsewhere on this thread that these men are coming because they want British womene bodies talk about flattering yourselves.

So did places like Japan and Saudi Arabia but they don’t take the migrants, why is it always the UK and surely we have had loads of migration since the 50s so enough already

Don't be so fucking ridiculous.

You think my father risked his life and worked so hard to get his mother, wife and daughters into a safe country for no reason. That we were all just as safe where we had no rights, were treated as animals by the majority of the male population and couldn't even leave the house without a male escort? Where if we were raped on the street in broad daylight, passing men wouldn't call the police or try to help, but would joyfully join in, in full view of their wives and neighbours?

Really?

Before his death, he was apoplectic about the unvetted migrants coming in. He certainly thought we were safer in a civilsed nation with 'Dave from Slough' because his experiences growing up and seeing his mother beaten, a cousin 'disappearing' after being raped and seeing women stoned to death by baying mobs showed him that was true.

You need to be very concerned about who you are giving voting rights to. What happens when there is a large enough population to use your democratic system against you?

I don’t think he’s changed anything so if numbers do go up I don’t think people can say Starmer did x and Burnham y so that’s the reason.

I expect they have a difficult issue with other launch sites with much bigger capacity and we’ll see what happens with that.
