Butt on display at lunch in south of France

I am currently having lunch in a beach restaurant and a girl with a lovely toned body is wearing a tiny thong with full ass on display. This seems to be a fashion thing and there are lots of women wearing the same cheese cutter! People are staring and some women are laughing. I find it a horrible trend and I am wondering what others think.

Can you just confirm that no kids at your table? Ie they weren’t aware of you and your husband talking about this woman?

No kids, what’s that got to do with it?

I am relieved that not listening to their parents talk about what others choose diners are wearing

Why the patronising tone? I’ve holidayed abroad plenty thanks, and I’m perfectly aware that people dress differently. I simply don’t think that means I have to find every choice of clothing appropriate for a restaurant which was my original point.

This pp does tend to patronise other posters and does more 'worthy preaching' than those she criticises for it!

Not where we are. This is not Greece.

Edited

And yet you describe that where you live “heaves” with tourists in August so much so that you return to the uk for the month

i would be surprised if the local economy isn’t to some extent dependent on tourist

Anearlyone · 12/08/2026 09:00

This is how you are choosing to spend your holiday @flipperfizz ?

Maybe people in the resident thought you were darn rude starting at your phone whilst out for a meal with your husband

OtterlyAstounding · 12/08/2026 09:00

Anearlyone · 12/08/2026 08:51

I am single

I guess I’m trying to find a reason aside from the Op isn’t just a judgemental prig.

The idea that people on this thread who freely say they would “hard judge” this woman are likely parents… is upsetting to me. My children know to never ever make personal comments about what others choose to wear.

I refuse to believe this woman was constantly bending over as the OP has tired to have us believe

Maybe she just doesn't want someones naked bum visible in her vicinity? I wouldn't either. I don't want to see my friend's bum, my father's bum, my teenage child's friend's bum, or a stranger's bum. If that makes me a 'prig' then I feel the word has lost its bite.

I find my children growing up in a world where women are treated (and treat themselves) as sexualised meat displayed on a platter, while men get to be seen as people, to be deeply harmful – just as harmful as the kind of modesty culture that insists women should be hidden away from sight.

I don't think that women choosing to show their bums is something that needs to be defended blindly, given both the broader social implications, and the harmful social norms these behaviours often stem from.

We’re all different. We make different choices, have different lifestyles, come in all shapes and sizes (some considered more aesthetically pleasing than others!). No two people are exactly the same. Rather than judging others, I think the old saying sums it up perfectly: “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.” It costs nothing to be kind.

Shouldn’t eat at a beach cafe. On the beach. Meters from sun bathers

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/08/2026 07:58

Call me naive but I have never in all my 48 years considered whether I want a tanned bum or not.

On the South of France - we go to a lot of beach and coastal towns there - both chi chi and more down to earth areas. Pretty much all shops restaurants and cafes, beach front or not, ask people to wear clothes. Sometimes there are signs, other times it is just a strong cultural norm. But I agree with the OP just wearing a thong bikini to beach reataurant in France would generally be unacceptable.

I noticed this year at a beach in the South of France it is becoming more common for younger men to wear a sort of shin length housecoat/kimono type cover up in a light patterened cotton material over their swim shorts when going in to beach side bars and restaurants

Yes! Isn't that what sarongs, kaftan-y, floaty dresses etc are for? You can chuck them over your swimsuit and still look elegant....and be hygeinic ...at the restaurant.

Are they not a thing any more? I used to wear a sarong thing - it was in gorgeous silk and I loved wearing it with my swimsuit.

Wow, what an intelligent and thoughtful response to my comment. You really addressed what I said, which incidentally, had the courtesy of addressing what you said in good faith.

But then that seems to be what's missing, I suppose: courtesy.

CoffeeCantata · 12/08/2026 09:05

OtterlyAstounding · 12/08/2026 08:42

Does your husband or boyfriend always ogle other women in thongs? Is that why you're so insistent that OP's must've been?

Honestly, what a silly line of argument.

I think this is the issue.

This pp is judging other men by her own partner's habits. Lots of projecting going on.

grim to think someone’s bare arse cheeks / crack has been there before yours

Sunloungerhogger · 12/08/2026 09:08

Oh my goodness, am amazed at the pile on the OP is getting. She’s quite clearly said she’s interested in people’s opinions on whether it’s appropriate to wear a thong in a restaurant. It’s a discussion forum, where people do discuss such things, as in hey everyone, what do you think of this? She’s not openly mocking a young woman. I agree, cover up somewhat for a restaurant even a beach one. I don’t think it’s appropriate to have bare bum on chairs that aren’t going to be wiped down before others sit on them, and I don’t think it’s appropriate in general to be in a thong in a restaurant. Beach, sure, restaurant no.

I was in a v crowded motorway service station in the U.K. on Sunday, and saw a woman strolling through it in a swimming costume. I thought that was odd too, as in wear swimwear at the beach, at a pool, but elsewhere surely people should put more clothes on?!

Actually no, it's winter where I am, and evening.

You're clearly here in bad faith. Such a shame.

If you don’t want to eat in the vicinity of lots of exposed flesh…. Bums, boobs, hairy men chests…. Don’t eat ON THE BEACH.

One would think that was fairly obvious

Because it's dressed up as concern.

So - let me get this straight: pps' comments are just 'dressed up' as concern. But your pious remarks about not mocking young women (who's doing that on here? Names, please, or stop accusing) are genuine concern. OK.

Gloriia - to me, your posts are characterised by a determination to miss the point of the argument. The discussion moves on but you return, like a dog, to a point which has already been covered and off we all go again.

It makes things tedious.

Totally missing the point!

Which is?

OP, you’re on holiday. With your husband. And you are choosing to spend your lovely beach lunch with your husband… updating your Mumsnet thread (Possibly a Mumsnetthere started a thread about YOU being so rude to sit at the table across from your husband on your screen)

and the following morning? Back on it.

Surely surely there is something nicer to do on holiday in the south of France with your husband than this?
