Butt on display at lunch in south of France

I am currently having lunch in a beach restaurant and a girl with a lovely toned body is wearing a tiny thong with full ass on display. This seems to be a fashion thing and there are lots of women wearing the same cheese cutter! People are staring and some women are laughing. I find it a horrible trend and I am wondering what others think.

Yes its amazing how people who are all for freedom and not judging think it is fine to judge and silence people for having an opinion on it.

Truthfully, I am not that bothered by people in thongs. I think it looks uncomfortable and inelegant, I wonder what possesses them to want to walk round amongst strangers like that, but at the end of the day, it's their bum and their dignity and so I am happy enough to turn a blind eye.

But what I do find bothersome is the one-sidedness of their attitudes: you are either all for freedom or you aren't, and they are always amongst the first to object to anyone having an opinion on it.

It's like they think they make the rules of what can be worn or said, when in fact if it's a free for all, then it's a free for all for all.

Because the bottom line (words carefully picked) is that lots of people do have negative opinions about certain types of swimwear. And guess what: it's fine for it to be up for discussion.

Having an opinion is fine, eg 'I'm in a beach cafe and a young lady has a thong bikini on which seems inappropriate to me in this setting'.

It's the mockery, your comments about 'poo smudges' and 'anus splicing', the suggestion she's dirty and everyone was laughing at her that is so very inappropriate.

So now I have to take a towel to the restaurant because you can't keep to basic standards of hygiene?

Anyway, no you don't have to do anything but considering it's a fact you can do nothing about who may or may not have sat down previously, I'd say it's not a bad idea.

Can’t see the issue tbh if it’s a beach restaurant. There are places in France and Spain where people are completely naked at the bar or restaurant if it’s outside on the beach. It’s just a human body, really no big deal.

Yes, I can see where you are coming from.

But one of the things that will get lively responses from people is when people try to shut down a conversation about the appropriateness of these things.

People DO notice bare buttocks, they often can't not notice, and many of those people will be men, and many will be women who judge the women for doing it.

Why is this a problem? Because making out that it is somehow cool and feminist (it's not) and the people judging are the ones with a problem is sending disingenuous messages to young girls, who are impressionable and may well grow to regret having worn these types of fashions.

It isn't necessary, it CAN be unhygienic in the wrong circumstances and, while I am content to accept some grown women will just want to do it and that is their business, I think there needs to be able to be frank conversation about the fact that for some people it goes too far. Shaming people for saying so is not on.

I can’t imagine choosing to spend my holiday starting a Mumsnet thread about the “horrible trend” of a woman wearing a thong bikini at a beach cafe. I suppose it would indicate the Op isn’t having the best time on this holiday… if she’s at a stunning beach having lunch with her husband but preferring to gaze at her phone and Mumsnet.

When you say unhygienic … what do you think the upshot could be. The person who sits on a chair where someone in a thong has sat contracts an infection?

YANBU it is disgusting and should be banned. Why can't our young ladies show a bit of decorum and dress decently instead of advertising "their wares" to all and sundry.

I don't think bare buttocks themselves are very likely to transmit infection in reality.

I was referring to the thong itself. It's just denial to pretend there isn't more risk of traces of fecal bacteria transferring to the fabric if your underwear is right up your crack instead of across your buttocks. Some people are being very coy about this, but gps and gynaecologists often advise against thongs for recurrent UTI sufferers.

For those old enough to remember there was a song by Peter Starsedt Where do you go to my lovely? In it he talks of a beautiful young woman he knows and in Summer she goes to Juan les- Pins where she wears her carefully designed topless swim suit. 50 years old that song. People were huffing about topless bathing in St. Tropez then. More things change......

Agree, 100%. The only reason to get your entire bum out is to show off your bum. There's no other reason, and it's only the average woman who does it, not the average man.

It's self–sexualisation/objectification most of the time, and as a feminist, and the mother of a daughter, the social attitude that drives that behaviour, and the defence of the behaviour, is tiresome and frustrating.

Your buttocks are a lot nearer to where poo comes from than your thigh.

In any case bare buttocks should NOT be allowed anywhere in public.
