to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

She's just lost her mum. I'm not saying you have done anything in the least unreasonable, but expecting her to be reasonable at a time like this may be a vain hope. She'll be leading with emotion not logic.

I remember a neighbour dropping some unwelcome news on us the morning as we arrived home from receiving some devastating medical news ourselves. My reaction to the neighbour's news was completely different to how I'd have taken it on any other day. Thinking, logical brain wasn't really in the building.

I think it’s fine to give her some grace because she’s grieving however she has doubled down on the op by slagging her off to neighbours and making out she’s been cruel when they did her a massive favour to begin with! I don’t think there’s any excuse for that really.

DangerousAlchemy · 23/08/2026 22:01

Print off this whole thread OP & all our comments and pop it through her front door. Absolute cheeky f**cker.

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 23/08/2026 22:11

Wow what did she think you’d do with her dog? If she does approach you please make another thread as this one is nearly full 😂 glad you enjoyed your holiday!

mulberrymilk · 23/08/2026 23:06

Wow! She really is entitled! And nuts.

Curleywoo · 23/08/2026 23:22

Batshit entitled.
If she comes near you tell her you will happily deal with her in the Small Claims Court.
I wouldn't look at her again.
THIS is why neighbours refuse to engage with favours.
Awful woman.

I'm curious to know what she expected you to do, given that she ignored the fact that you were gong away and had informed her of this.

Absolutely this - what on earth were you supposed to do?

Which is exactly what I’d to be asking her if she tries to demand you pay for the vets boarding fees.

What exactly, in her viewpoint, does she think you should have done instead? Hmmm??? Pray tell old lady!! Threaten back invoicing for pre-holiday stress!

Glad you had a good holiday, and that the poor dog was obviously looked after.

IronEverything · 24/08/2026 06:34

I would LOVE to be there when she has the cheek to ask you for money.

Gengha · 24/08/2026 06:41

thanks for updating us. I wouldn’t be slow in giving the cheeky bastard some home truths, dead mother or not.

Nor too devastated and grieving not to bitch about the OP to someone else though.

We are back. We haven’t seen the neighbour or dog but another neighbour has seen her and told us that she is very angry with us. 🙄 Apparently she arranged for someone to pick up her dog from the vet but the vet charged her for the time the dog had been with them. The neighbour is apparently going to make us pay as she hadn’t given us permission to take the dog to the vet. Lol.

Obviously this is all second hand information through another neighbour and we don’t know the neighbour who has told us this very well, so we will see if neighbour with the dog actually says anything to us. Obviously we won’t be paying for anything and she is crazy if she thinks we will be.

Importantly, the dog is ok and I’m feeling very relaxed after our holiday. 😅

Glad you enjoyed your holiday!

And as the phrase goes

no good deed goes unpunished!

Ignore the neighbour.

She isn't a child. It's horribly sad to loose your mother but it doesn't actually force you into insensibility, you have to choose to loose all reason.

You can lose your mum and not behave so badly, this wasn’t a one off “snap” it was over the course of several days!

Good to know she’s able to bitch and moan about someone who helped her during her need.

Trallers · 23/08/2026 16:57

What utter cheek - no good deed goes unpunished indeed. Unfortunately she sounds like one of those sorts of entitled people who refuse to see their own faults, so I imagine she'll forever think you swindled her.

I was thinking exactly the same . What on earth did she think you were going to do with the dog ? What a ridiculous woman

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 24/08/2026 06:53

To add to the CF neighbour’s annoyance, when you finally cross paths, the dog’s bound to come running up to you delightedly wagging its tail Grin

Merrybandofpirates · 24/08/2026 07:12

So she was capable of sorting out someone for her dog, she just didn’t bother when she thought she could force you to cancel your holiday and get free pet sitting.

HoraceCope · 10/08/2026 21:01

funnily enough there are often plenty of threads from people who are on holiday. crazy

Those posts are pretty much exclusively posts about things that are happening on the holiday and the OP needing advice about that. OP has blocked her neighbour's number so she won't have anything to report.

KamikazePigeon · 24/08/2026 07:57

Glad the dog's OK. The neighbour can go kick rocks.

so what else could you have done in the circumstances? She knew you were going on holiday.

Pippa12 · 24/08/2026 09:02

Good grief! What a neighbour!

Iloveacurry · 24/08/2026 09:32

I would be telling her where to go if she asks for payment! What did she expect you to do. You were going on holiday and she was ignoring your texts and calls! And her relative messaged that she wasn’t in a place to think about the dog!

Monkeypuppy · 24/08/2026 09:47

I'm glad you had a great holiday @CantGetBackToSleep . It's also great to read that the dog is ok.

I was wondering, like everyone else here, what she expected you to do with the dog when you left to go on holiday.

Whatever it was that she had in mind, she obviously thought you'd pay for any costs involved, how cheeky of her. And then to complain about you to the neighbours - she should be grateful you were able to take the dog at short notice and look after him for a week.

HoppingPavlova · 24/08/2026 11:36

A CF who knows no bounds😆. Hard to tell if a complete CF or an absolute fruitcake.

Of course the vet charged, they are not a free pet sitting service! That’s common sense. She should be so relieved that her pet was safe and cared for and happily pay for this.

Wonder if she is actually going to come see you and ask for money, I highly doubt it, no one can be that thick, I’m guessing she is just blowing hot air.

Ladynightcourt · 24/08/2026 11:37

Going to need a thread two at this rate 🤣

pearpudding · 24/08/2026 12:08

The beauty of her whinging to all the neighbours about you is that she's inadvertently letting them all know exactly how she'll treat them should they ever help her out for anything in the future.

More fool her.

Considering mumsnet is always banging on about mental health issues, Considering half of mumsnet kids have special needs and their feelings have to be considered by all and sundry, there's some awful, nasty, heartless posts.

Not one single poster has considered that the dogs owner has got issues.

This aged well!
