to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

I was devastated when my mam died suddenly, however my husband also chose that week to fuck off and leave me with two young children so I had no choice but to bloody get on with sorting their birthday parties etc and looking after my seriously ill father… grief is horrendous but unfortunately life also goes on and your neighbour is being a selfish prick!

PinkEasterbunny · 11/08/2026 07:34

I have suggested several times that she should have rung around local animal charities for help. If they couldn't help, they would have given constructive advice.

@HarshbutTrue2 however the clock was ticking, the OP had a plane to catch.

She did the best she could under the (ridiculous) circumstances

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 11/08/2026 10:09

Yes there is a supposition, given the OP was about to go away, that she had time to ring around animal charities for help. Planning to go away, if there are children who she would have required time to organise and for umpteen other things that one needs to remember, may have left her with little time for anything else. She states she was already stressed from dealing with the situation that had been dumped on her. Whilst I accept that the NDN may have been reeling from her mother's death, she should have known that she had to give some resolution to he OP as her holiday was imminent. At the very least got someone else to act on her behalf. She now has to return back to her home knowing she has mightily taken advantage of the person she lives next door to her and who helped her out of a difficult situation.

sueelleker · 11/08/2026 10:20

And who is now extremely unlikely to offer help again.

tartanhaggis7 · 11/08/2026 11:09

The kennels that wanted payment upfront that the neighbour wouldn’t pay? And how long should OP have booked and paid for the kennels for because she didn’t know when the neighbour was planning on returning being as she refused to have a conversation.

Anyway, ready the updates. It’s sorted.

WindDothBlow · 11/08/2026 12:02

Why in god's name are people still arguing about this four days after OP went on holiday? RTFT people

Sunnibee · 11/08/2026 12:56

thepariscrimefiles · 10/08/2026 14:29

I agree. The implication is that people who have still managed to fulfil their caring obligations after the death of a parent or spouse/partner aren't really grieving properly and that falling apart and abandoning all their responsibilities means that they obviously cared much more for their deceased loved ones.

It's really insulting to people who, even in the depths of grief, still manage to soldier on, through sheer necessity, as there is no-one else to do it.

But no one has any idea what has happened to the neighbour including the OP.
Maybe she had a breakdown and is in a psychotic state, for example?

Does anyone remember the recent thread about a neighbour who asked OP to look after her cat when she was away, and OP couldn’t because she was going away herself? So she left it with two very elderly neighbours who had carers and weren’t able to do anything so the carers were feeding the cat every few days? The thread got to 1000 posts and I didnt see a follow up.

Yes people thought the OP's son was massively unreasonable for not doing it, even though the neighbour only wanted to pay him buttons, Apparently he should have done it to be neighbourly.

No. If you have pets, you have responsibilities. Sadly many owners think they are cute/furry fashion accessories and don't look after them.

Yes, but they were a few days away from the neighbour coming back from holiday and the cat was missing, OP had just come back from her work trip, then the thread filled and I couldn’t find a new thread.

Maybe the neighbour has witnessed a crime and is now under witness protection and won’t be able to come back, and the police said she must relinquish the dog in case the dog doesn’t respect the seriousness of witness protection. Double good job OP didn’t pay for the dog boarding then.

Or maybe the neighbour’s mum didn’t die, but the neighbour secretly hates the dog and the whole thing was made up to enable the neighbour to abandon the dog without looking too bad?

Or maybe the neighbour was about to…….oh forget it. I’m going to get myself a nice coffee.

but according to OP all she said was that owner wasn't in a state to deal with it. So that could be for all kinds of reasons!

That thread was as mad as this one. People saying that a neighbours parents should look after a dog that is absolutely nothing to do with them. 🙄

It was my comment she was laughing at. @Sunnibee said “Maybe she had a breakdown and is in a psychotic state, for example?” so I made my comment about some equally unlikely scenarios.

Then you got cross.

No one has laughed at the neighbours mum who has sadly died. And I find it horrible to insinuate that anyone has. If you read all the comments carefully you’ll see that not one person has done so.
