to be annoyed about this situation with neighbour and her dog?

I’m lying awake because I don’t know what to do about this situation.

On Sunday our neighbour came to see us visibly upset. Her mum had been taken into hospital and she had been told to get there asap. Her mum lives in Scotland and we are in the South of England so she was panicking about getting there on time and also about who would look after her dog. We helped her book a flight as she was in a state shaking and in no state to think properly. She asked if we could have her dog for a few days. Reluctantly we agreed but said we were leaving to go on holiday on Friday evening so she would need to make other arrangements by Friday morning for him. We went and collected the dog and he has been with us since. We have our own dogs and they are all getting on well.

Our neighbour text me on Monday to say her mum had died. We had a brief text conversation and obviously I said how sorry I was to hear about her mum.

I text her on Wednesday morning to say that I know she has a lot to deal with but we really need to know what she’s doing about her dog as we are due to go away. I didn’t hear anything so I text her again yesterday to ask what she wanted us to do with the dog and got a text from another of her relatives from her phone saying our neighbour is very upset and isn’t in the right place to sort this out. I replied to say I understood but that when we agreed to have the dog, it was on the condition that she made other arrangements for the dog by Friday morning as we are due to go on holiday. I didn’t get a reply. I tried to call last night but it went to voicemail. I had already called our nearest boarding kennels who do have space so I told her on the voicemail that I could drop him at kennels but she needs to give them her payment details. I still haven’t had a reply from my neighbour.

What do we do? I’ve asked other neighbours and they won’t have him. My parents are having our dogs while we are away but are not willing to take the neighbours dog as well.

A friend has suggested I drop him at our local vets which is the vet my neighbour uses but I don’t think they would be ok with that. Another friend said if it comes to it to call the rspca, explain the situation and say he’s basically been abandoned.

I’m so stressed. I know my neighbour has lost her mum but we are not missing our holiday.

Since she blocked the neighbour I don't see there'll be much to update!

Seeing as she lives next door she won't be able to block her in real life!

peace7 · 16/08/2026 08:29

Hi @CantGetBackToSleep hope you had a lovely holiday after all that stress. What’s the situation now with the neighbour?

CantGetBackToSleep · 23/08/2026 16:39

We are back. We haven’t seen the neighbour or dog but another neighbour has seen her and told us that she is very angry with us. 🙄 Apparently she arranged for someone to pick up her dog from the vet but the vet charged her for the time the dog had been with them. The neighbour is apparently going to make us pay as she hadn’t given us permission to take the dog to the vet. Lol.

Obviously this is all second hand information through another neighbour and we don’t know the neighbour who has told us this very well, so we will see if neighbour with the dog actually says anything to us. Obviously we won’t be paying for anything and she is crazy if she thinks we will be.

Importantly, the dog is ok and I’m feeling very relaxed after our holiday. 😅

wow no good deed goes unpunished ey OP. At least you know to avoid her from now. Literally what did she expect you to do with the dog?!

Absurd. At least you know you have a team of mumsnetters on your side.

Hahaha, she's an absolute crank 😂
Don't spare her a second thought.

Trallers · 23/08/2026 16:57

What utter cheek - no good deed goes unpunished indeed. Unfortunately she sounds like one of those sorts of entitled people who refuse to see their own faults, so I imagine she'll forever think you swindled her.

Ewock · 23/08/2026 17:00

Well she's proved she is a cf. Glad you had a great holiday

Promise you’ll post another thread about how that goes? 😂 she’s absolutely nuts!

Whaleandsnail6 · 23/08/2026 17:11

No good deed goes unpunished 🙄

Such a shame if this is how she really thinks, instead of being grateful for all of the support and care you gave her in an emergency, including taking her dog in and then ensuring it was left in a safe place.

Hopefully she will see sense and come round with a bunch of flowers to say thank you

I'm curious to know what she expected you to do, given that she ignored the fact that you were gong away and had informed her of this.

Absolutely this - what on earth were you supposed to do?

B1anche · 23/08/2026 17:55

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you had a lovely relaxing holiday. I wonder what she expected you to do with the dog. Perhaps she genuinely assumed you would cancel your holiday or find some else to look after it for free! Please do let us know of any developments!

What an absolute CF and a fool she is. Unbelievable.

@CantGetBackToSleep
Please start a new thread when you and the neighbor "talk".
This thread is in the running for "I Can't Believe They Are This Entitled" end of the year award, though your neighbor doesn't win a prize for her behavior. Just several thousand eye rolls and under the breath mutters from the MN readers.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 23/08/2026 18:42

Wow what a brass neck that neighbour has, I hope the vet is rinsing her on the fees!

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 23/08/2026 19:45

Wow, she has some cheek!
Glad the dog is ok, and you got your holiday!
I hope your crazy neighbour regains her senses and apologizes

MyEasterBonnet · 23/08/2026 20:17

Glad you had a lovely holiday! I’d love to know what expected you to do and if she thought you’d cancel your holiday to watch her dog. At least you know not to help her again.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 23/08/2026 20:22

Good to know your neighbour wasn't so devastated and traumatised that she couldn't speak to people afterall! She was deliberately ghosting you as a manipulation tactic.

Thanks so much for updating us.

HoldMyWine · 23/08/2026 20:38

Your neighbour is a complete CF. Glsd
you enjoyed your holiday.

Buffs · 23/08/2026 20:38

You were responsible and generous. It would be shameless of her not to thank you.

Shinckle · 23/08/2026 21:11

She's just lost her mum. I'm not saying you have done anything in the least unreasonable, but expecting her to be reasonable at a time like this may be a vain hope. She'll be leading with emotion not logic.

I remember a neighbour dropping some unwelcome news on us the morning as we arrived home from receiving some devastating medical news ourselves. My reaction to the neighbour's news was completely different to how I'd have taken it on any other day. Thinking, logical brain wasn't really in the building.

BagsyTimBradford · 23/08/2026 21:13

She's angry?! 🙄 CF.

Hope the neighbours realise the awful position you were put in after helping out and no doubt it's been at the back of your mind while away and on your journey home.

Have your best steely face ready for her if she tries any nonsense.

Glad the dog is ok though, left to her and you not helping in the first place goodness knows what would have happened to him.

Sunnibee · 23/08/2026 21:19

Ok so if what this acquaintance said is true , how bloody selfish is your neighbour!!! Apologies that i doubted you were doing the right thing . Glad you blocked her.
