AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

The accusation of physical violence was not proven. No evidence except Knox's accusation.

That is speculation. Amanda Knox remains a convicted criminal with a three year sentence.

Isn't "that is speculation" just a little bit rich coming from the poster who has continually speculated as to Amanda's guilt is relation to Meredith's murder, despite her acquittal?

And, while we can only speculate as to how the slander matter will ultimately conclude, given the ongoing proceedings, we can say with confidence that - at minimum - it stemmed from severe violations of Amanda's human rights.

Which honestly, I think makes your mocking "poor Amanda" pretty gross.

Cagoenlaleche · 07/08/2026 20:19

There is no evidence she was beaten or physically abused by the police. Check your facts.

Ok you are entitled to your opinion.. but it obviously doesn't change the fact she is a convicted criminal with a three year sentence.

So you don’t know that she’s applied to lots
of role and been rejected.

got it

Of course not, which is why I didn't say anything remotely resembling that. Not least because the idea that this is merely about job offers is so incomplete that it'd be beneath us. I feel safe in assuming we all know that would be only the first hurdle. A small part of the issues a PTSD sufferer believed by apparently the majority of the species to be a murderer would face.

I feel optimistic that some critical posters will tell us soon whether they'd be willing to work alongside her or not. That could be illuminating.

And, of course, there was never going to be any evidence because her interview was not recorded (which was illegal the moment they considered her a suspect), she had no representative present (in violation of her human rights), and the authorities refused to investigate the accusation (another violation of her human rights).

She told the truth about everything else, why would she lie about that?

*Watching someone for an evening is much less of a commitment than employing them, working alongside them or utilising their professional services.+

Implying you think AL has been applying to jobs and rejected

How exactly does it imply that?

I’ve just had a look and I think OP
you've posted a misleading opening thread

it certainly isn’t billed to be about mocking the circumstances around MK death - it’s billed as a chance to hear AK speak about her experience of being wrongly accused because of the way the world saw her and how that links to the patriarchy (my word) - which we know also links to the murder of women and girls - satire is often used to ta Joe difficult subjects

at the same time I bet people only booked to see it to see her in the flesh!

and also I can understand how it would feel for the family - anything around MK death

but I agree overall that AK should not be silenced - I can see why it’s called cartwheeled - again her behaviour as a women was disproportionately judged

I dont think she will actually be talking of the murder - it’s a show about patriarchy and the danger of it

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:29

AsHot · 07/08/2026 20:25

How exactly does it imply that?

So you don’t think that AK has had doors closed to her. Right

Cagoenlaleche · 07/08/2026 20:31

The law needs evidence. You can't pick and choose which parts you think are ok to accept. Knox and Sollecito were freed because the court confirmed the police evidence was flawed. They proved it. Similarly, you can't accuse the Police of violence just on the say so of the accused.

11AndCounting · 07/08/2026 20:31

ThatJadeLion · 07/08/2026 20:20

Ok you are entitled to your opinion.. but it obviously doesn't change the fact she is a convicted criminal with a three year sentence.

Or the fact that she was not guilty of Meredith's murder, or that the court concluded that her direct material involvement in the attack was physically and logistically impossible.

Or the fact that she was subject to various violations of her human rights.

AsHot · 07/08/2026 20:32

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:29

That non-sequitur doesn't answer my question. How did it imply that? If you're going to claim things, expect to be asked to back them up.

Cagoenlaleche · 07/08/2026 20:19

There is no evidence she was beaten or physically abused by the police. Check your facts.

Knox asserted that a policewoman struck her during the interrogation. She was sued for defamation on this basis. The courts found in her favour, implicitly confirming that she had indeed been subjected to police violence. Check your facts.

BlackRowan · 07/08/2026 20:32

It’s not about Meredith.

Amanda Knox is allowed to make a show about her experiences and about gross miscarriage of justice towards her (which luckily had been corrected)

So You do or you don’t think AK has missed out on lots of opportunities for work, or you do?

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:34

if That wasn’t what were you saying… what was your point?

I can absolutely pick and choose what parts I believe, thanks. You seem to be mistaking me for a court asked with determining whether a crime occurred beyond all reasonable doubt.

On a lower, balance of probabilities basis - and noting the pattern of illegality demonstrated by the police, and that they prevented the allegations being investigated, I'm inclined to believe Knox.

Yes and she has said she takes MK murder extremely seriously

I see it more as they are two women who were let down by a society that views women a certain way and frequently murders them - this one is getting to tell her story about being subject to miscarriage of justice when it was a man who actually murdered MK- we shouldn’t be silencing this women

ThatJadeLion · 07/08/2026 20:40

Or the fact that she was not guilty of Meredith's murder, or that the court concluded that her direct material involvement in the attack was physically and logistically impossible.

Or the fact that she was subject to various violations of her human rights.

But none of that changes the fact that a convicted criminal whose three year sentence arose from this very case, has now chosen to turn that case into a comedy show. I'm sure many people will find that deeply distasteful alone.

AsHot · 07/08/2026 20:42

Randallscandal · 07/08/2026 20:33

So You do or you don’t think AK has missed out on lots of opportunities for work, or you do?

Obviously. The prison time and the fact that she still has a criminal conviction mean she's missed out on lots of opportunities for work. She wasn't in the labour market for several years because of being banged up, so that's a certainty.

I'm glad you've broadened this just beyond do you know she missed out on any specific job offers, as the issue is clearly way wider than that.

Paddingtonsmarmaladesandwich2 · 07/08/2026 20:43

Satire is often used as a vehicle to address the darkest parts of our society - the show isn’t about MK murder - it’s about the miscarriage of justice the whole world watched and this women was on the end of

She's already performed the show in the US and it is about her experiences, her false conviction and time in prison.
She's not up there making jokes about the murder.
