AIBU to think an Edinburgh festival show about Meredith Kercher's murder should be stopped?

VivienneDelacroix · 06/08/2026 01:04

Aibu to think that this show at the Edinburgh Festival should be cancelled? It mocks the circumstances around the murder of Meredith Kercher and serves it up as entertainment.

Not only is it horribly disrespectful of Meredith's family, but it also belittles the issue of violence against girls and women.

Meredith's siblings are calling for it to be pulled from the festival. There is also a petition calling for it to be stopped.

But none of that changes the fact that a convicted criminal whose three year sentence arose from this very case, has now chosen to turn that case into a comedy show. I'm sure many people will find that deeply distasteful alone.

The show is about her experience being the subject of the MOJ not the murder

and how she is going to explain it to her children - that she was a victim of our patriarchal world

satire is often used to talk about the darkest parts of our society and highlight experience

Obviously. The prison time and the fact that she still has a criminal conviction mean she's missed out on lots of opportunities for work. She wasn't in the labour market for several years because of being banged up, so that's a certainty.

I'm glad you've broadened this just beyond do you know she missed out on any specific job offers, as the issue is clearly way wider than that.

All clear

but you don’t know that she’s applied for
jobs and been rejected

Nobody knows that, nobody in here has claimed that, and its weird that you keep banging on about it.

Yep, which again is why I didn't say that. I don't make arguments I think are really shit.

Meanwhile, I wonder if the poster who claimed she could've done anything is going to come back and flesh that out a bit for us?

We all know you can’t hold a job or apply for any when you are in prison…

Indeed

but to say she’s been denied opportunities is speculation

I very much doubt she’d be performing at Edinburgh festival without her history

It’s the fringe festival - lots of people perform there - relatively easy to get a spot for many

are you mixing it up with the Edinburgh festival?

but I don’t think she would have been “sold out” if it wasn’t her

It isn't. Because she was denied all other opportunities when she was in prison, and the outstanding criminal conviction also precludes some things even now.

The fact that she's been the victim of a colossal miscarriage of justice has indeed opened up the performance, autobiography and interview type opportunities to her though, you're not wrong there. There's a very big market for true crime! She obviously couldn't perform a show about what she went through if she'd never gone through it. You and I have never been subject to international misogynistic witch hunts, so us attempting to do an Edinburgh fringe show about our experiences of it probably wouldn't attract much interest.

Exactly - it’s prob the most known MOJ worldwide

I’ve just had a look and I think OP
you've posted a misleading opening thread

it certainly isn’t billed to be about mocking the circumstances around MK death - it’s billed as a chance to hear AK speak about her experience of being wrongly accused because of the way the world saw her and how that links to the patriarchy (my word) - which we know also links to the murder of women and girls - satire is often used to ta Joe difficult subjects

at the same time I bet people only booked to see it to see her in the flesh!

and also I can understand how it would feel for the family - anything around MK death

but I agree overall that AK should not be silenced - I can see why it’s called cartwheeled - again her behaviour as a women was disproportionately judged

I dont think she will actually be talking of the murder - it’s a show about patriarchy and the danger of it

Do you not thing she could have stuck to the US and other places? There’s really no need for her to bring this to the Meredith’s home country when the Kercher family are so clear they don’t want it. In particular, I saw Meredith’s sister say Meredith would have hated the show while Knox has claimed Meredith would have liked it. I think that shows a fair bit of disrespect towards Meredith tbh.

11AndCounting · 07/08/2026 20:56

Why keep saying it, then?

Someone speculated that "she could have done anything" career-wise.

AsHot felt that speculation dubious

You are speculating that she wouldn't be performing at the Fringe were it not for her notoriety (again, I'm minded to agree).

Fundamentally, you're accusing someone of speculating when they challenged someone else for speculating, then making your own speculations.

AK has certainly embraced the opportunities that have been made available to her as a result.

sorry I couldn’t resist 😂

don’t know what you are arguing about (haven’t read your posts) but it seems to be about stating facts

Cagoenlaleche · 07/08/2026 21:00

No, Amanda Knox's specific accusation of physical abuse was not upheld by law.The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) formally reviewed her case and explicitly rejected her claim that she was physically mistreated or slapped by the police. The court stated there was insufficient evidence to prove that the physical abuse had actually occurred. The Legal ContextWhile the court did not find proof that she was beaten, it did rule strongly against the Italian authorities regarding her overall treatment:Procedural Violations: The ECHR ruled that Italian investigators violated Knox's rights by denying her access to a lawyer and an independent translator during the interrogation.Failure to Investigate: The court penalized Italy because authorities failed to properly investigate her complaints of mistreatment.Slander Conviction Upheld: Because her claim of being physically forced into a confession was not legally validated, Italy's highest court ultimately upheld her slander conviction for falsely accusing bar owner Patrick Lumumba under pressure.

Mmm, I dunno if this is the best example of swings and roundabouts tbh. That's usually understood to mean the one broadly balances out the other, is that the definition you're using here?

Notwithstanding that she can perform were ever she wants and has a willing venue and audience - given the extent of negative (appalling) press coverage she received in the UK, I would completely understand if she specifically wanted to perform in the UK.

There's also the fact that The Fringe is the largest performing arts festival and comedy festival, and comedians worldwide use it as a launchpad.

Honestly, although I give the family a lot of leeway given their trauma, I do think the claim that "Meredith would have hated the show" pretty dubious, particularly when from someone who hasn't seen the show. I think it was entirely fair for Knox to respond to that attack.

I think our friends are more in a position to know us at the ages they were..

why does she have to stick to the US? This is an international fringe festival

the irony of this being about silencing a women who was silenced and wrongly convicted of a heinous crime a man undertook

again she’s talking of her experience of being a victim of MOJ not a victim of murder and why it happened and how she will explain that to her daughter
