This doesn't apply to people with childcare or caring responsibilities, any sort of illness or disability which means they cannot work full time.
But I've seen a few people on here or social media basically saying 'I can do supply/care work/0 hours work and sometimes only get a shift or two a week, because my husband earns well.'

So they're pretty much choosing to swan about and avoid full-time work, because they assume their husband or partner will carry on in their high-earning, full time role.

What happens if this husband loses their job, becomes sick, or just decides they're sick of having to be the breadwinner?

I see it all the time on supply teacher pages,'Oh I've only had 1 day of work in 2 months but it's fine because my husband is the breadwinner!!'

There are other jobs where you could make a living, you just don't want to do them, yet you still want your dream forever house and luxury lifestyle. If it were the wife full-time and the husband taking the piss there would be uproar.

I work part time, dh works full time. I do all the cleaning, cooking, bills, appointments, holidays etc. he does the washing. He might work full time but I do my fair share and am always on the go, whereas once he's home from work that's him practically done. This suits us both, we're happy with the arrangement. What business is it to you or anyone else?

But you worked your way up out of low paid work. Many people never do.

So your alternative is to prostitute yourself out to a man?

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say.

Low paid work is fine.

It means you still have your own income and if your DH leaves you for another woman you are still able to stand on your own two feet and have a paycheck every month.

It doesn’t matter if that pay check is minimum wage.

IStillHearTheWaves · Yesterday 19:07

I think it is just down to the individuals . What suits them , if the man is happy then no issue. Some men like to be the provider . My husband would love to earn enough so that I didn’t have to work and he would love that to be a setup where he comes home to a clean house , dinner done and sex on tap ! He loves buying me things , nice clothes and paying for my hair etc and although he doesn’t ever ask I know he likes this being known .

So maid/prostitute is what he'd love then?

The issue is that men who'd 'love this' would love the dominance and control over someone who is supposed to be their equal.

You said you are physically sick at the thought of women who do not have careers.
I find that very sad.

Totaldramallama · Yesterday 19:09

People do not only have value as individuals if they earn money. That is a strange way to think about life. Many spouses are happy to be the breadwinner to provide nice lives for the people they love. Families are units and if everyone has agreed to the lifestyle then calling it sponging is inaccurate and unfair. Work, which often involves making money for someone else, is not the be all and end all of human existence

Theworldsgonemadagain · Yesterday 19:10

I couldn't care less, they aren't taking taxpayers money. You are clearly jealous!

britneyisfreebutnotokay · Yesterday 19:11

Your husband couldn’t afford to sustain you even if you wanted that life. The woman you’re complaining about have made different choices and will continue to. Get over it.

I guess you’ve never experienced abusive relationships where the woman can’t escape or be screwed if she did.

If you did, you would realise that someone having so much control over you and your entire life depending on someone else would make you feel sick too.

I think some people are not being entirely genuine because I don’t believe for one second they’d encourage me to date a man who didn’t work.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 19:14

I know it's really angered a lot of the people in this situation. If it makes you feel better to scream jealousy then so be it, we're all entitled to an opinion.

In most cases, I'd imagine anyone who chooses not to work FT does have caring responsibilities etc. But if a man (or woman) is happy to work long hours in a hard job, and for their partner not to, that's no one's business. Maybe they like the partner at home having all the house chores done?
A lot of couple split up different chores as they like, for example one does admin/laundry/cleaning and the other cooks/does DIY and it's fine if both are happy.
I could just about get it if you're annoyed they're choosing to claim benefits you're paying for while they work less than you, but if it's someone else paying, why does it affect anyone but them? If you say they're paying less tax than if they were FT, well what about anyone in a lower paid job? Or anyone not bothering with a side hustle?

Probably not much more to say, I just find it a double standard and it comes from the idea that men are expected to be the providers and work full-time. Men will be slated for this most of the time.

Yes but there are complex reasons why more women do this than men. Gender pay gaps, men not bearing and breastfeeding children, the fact that men are 3-4 times more likely to earn over 100k than a woman in the UK, according to a quick Google search. It is not as simple as women being lazy entitled gold diggers, as much as you'd like it to be

I don’t think posters are angry, rather they are frustrated that your logic is flawed. If a couple jointly decides that one party will work full time and the other very part time then this is not entitled behaviour.

WorkCleanRepeat · Yesterday 19:18

If my husband was a high earner I'd quite happily just pick up a few shifts here and there when I fancied it.

I have to be around before and after school (so I work 8.30-3) but things would run a lot more smoothly round here if I didn't have to.

ThatCyanCat · Yesterday 19:19

It's only entitled if you think someone is obliged to work full time so you don't have to. If it's a mutual agreement and you appreciate it, it's just enjoying a privilege. And if your situation changes, you change with it. There's nothing inherently entitled about it.

YANBU!!

I couldn’t imagine my DH stressing out in a 40+ hour week job and I’m there doing just a few hours.

I’d be so embarrassed and I’d never be so selfish.

I am someone who needs equality in a relationship.
It’s really important that my DP does not see me as a maid.
We both work, both cook, both clean, both parent etc - I would never settle for anything less than equal partners.

I was raised in a home of DV and surrounded by women who couldn’t leave abusive marriages due to not having enough income.

I feel physically ill when I hear about women not having their own careers.

"I feel physically ill when I hear about women not having their own careers."

well either you are exagerating or you have bigger problems than worrying about other people's partnerships.

Theworldsgonemadagain · Yesterday 19:21

I'm not in that situation but it must be bloody lovely not to have to work. No one wants to get up and grind their arse off for years doing the same old shit. No one lies on their death bed wishing they worked more. Life is for living, if couples are happy with said arrangement and aren't sponging off tax payers then good for them.

As an aside I've edited this three times for spelling mistakes. There are probably still more. Clearly I could do with not working as I am incompetent! 😂 Any rich men out there??

PancakeCloud · Yesterday 19:22

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 16:59

I'm just saying I find it entitled. It's not about two people earning different amounts, that's very common. It's sexist too, I guarantee if I'd posted saying my husband was lounging around on one day a week of work and I were having to pay all the bills, I'd be told to leave him.

I don’t see how it’s remotely entitled. People organise their households in lots of different ways, and if one partner is only working 1-2 days a week, they’re probably taking on a greater share of the domestic labour.

It might be bad for them financially in the case of a breakup, but it’s not entitled?

Awkwardisfunny · Yesterday 19:22

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 16:59

It's just an opinion. I couldn't feel happy in myself knowing I'm sponging off my husband, but it only applies to women for some reason.

I used to have that opinion but not anymore. I don't feel happy knowing I'm being used by mega rich people to make them richer. If a man wants a woman to share his life with (e.g. me) and to look after him, then I'm happy for him to look after me. It has to be reciprocal though. None of this nonsense complaining about doing most of the housework if you do not have a job: that is your job.

I can honestly say I've never cared about how other couples run their working lives and finances. Something about you using the word "sponging" is making me feel uncomfortable about your motivations.

But people ARE entitled to not work or work part time if they as a family dont need the money. Why shouldn't they?

And stop being so sexist. I'm the bigger earner in my family, my partner has now gone part time. It works for us. I'm certainly not the only woman I know who is the breadwinner.

You will probably be happier if you spend less time judging others families arrangements . You’ll have less to be angry about 👍
