To find this entitled?

This doesn't apply to people with childcare or caring responsibilities, any sort of illness or disability which means they cannot work full time.
But I've seen a few people on here or social media basically saying 'I can do supply/care work/0 hours work and sometimes only get a shift or two a week, because my husband earns well.'

So they're pretty much choosing to swan about and avoid full-time work, because they assume their husband or partner will carry on in their high-earning, full time role.

What happens if this husband loses their job, becomes sick, or just decides they're sick of having to be the breadwinner?

I see it all the time on supply teacher pages,'Oh I've only had 1 day of work in 2 months but it's fine because my husband is the breadwinner!!'

There are other jobs where you could make a living, you just don't want to do them, yet you still want your dream forever house and luxury lifestyle. If it were the wife full-time and the husband taking the piss there would be uproar.

It's different if the person is applying for every full-time job they can but aren't having luck, it's when they choose to stay somewhere they know they'll barely have to work.

I don't understand why it's any skin off your nose. Or any of your business.

Lmnop22 · Yesterday 16:58

Presumably it’s a conversation they’ve had with their partner and suits them both. Maybe even if they don’t have children or a disability, they prefer to look after the home or pursue hobbies or whatever.

It’s really nobody else’s business!

I'm just saying I find it entitled. It's not about two people earning different amounts, that's very common. It's sexist too, I guarantee if I'd posted saying my husband was lounging around on one day a week of work and I were having to pay all the bills, I'd be told to leave him.

I know what you mean about the comments that would occur if the tables were reversed, but I don't think it is entitled. Each to their own, and if they choose to live that way, it is up to them. As long as they understand the consequences, that's their decision.

Personally, I always aspired to earn sufficient that my wife could choose to work or not as she pleased.

It's just an opinion. I couldn't feel happy in myself knowing I'm sponging off my husband, but it only applies to women for some reason.

It’s fine if they aren’t claiming benefits and the person earning doesn’t mind supporting their partner.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 17:00

Each to their own indeed. But i couldn't just decide tomorrow i fancied pursuing more hobbies, my husband doesn't earn enough to cover both of us and it's not his job to.

Your point is?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 17:01

Again it's different to someone trying to find a job. But they know supply is 0 hours work, they just think they're above other roles.

My point is that men wouldn't get away with this the same way a lot of women do.

I don’t think it’s as black & white as that as people do it for all sorts of reasons. I chose to only work part time because I wanted to, not because I needed to. I took very early retirement at 58. My husband supported my decision and I’m certainly not sponging off him!

I have met men doing this.

You sound jealous tbh.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 17:03

If someone has their own savings or wealth to pay their share and not need to work, that's different. But what would happen if their husband decided to leave and take a lower paid job because he was tired of it all?

My thoughts too. You beat me too it.

I can see why, but I would honestly rather work than take advantage of my husband.

Then you sort it as a couple.

As above, I wouldn't do that even if i had the option, I'd rather pay my way.

I have seen multiple threads on here about how the woman's spouse or partner is in and out of work, quitting with nothing to go to, freelance and so on. Comments are all on her side. Why ?

I did supply without thinking anything like this.
You can't really know why people do a supply job.

Flamingojune · Yesterday 17:06

The job market is pretty tough at the moment

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahh · Yesterday 17:07

I've done supply myself so I know what it's like. They know it's sporadic work and don't care because their husband will keep them in their luxury lifestyle.

Indianajet · Yesterday 17:07

It is no-one else's business. You do what you want, let everyone else sort out their own priorities.

But they’re not taking advantage of their husband. They will have had a discussion and reached a conclusion that works for them. You don’t know people’s circumstances so please stop being so judgmental.
