Just cut my own hair-totally ruined it!

I have long hair and have trimmed it once before using the ponytail method and it was fine.
I did this again today and it looked nice, just a basic trim.
Then I looked at the front layers as they needed trimming.
I followed a tutorial but have completely wrecked my hair. It’s uneven at the front, just tufts of hair, cut far too short, they don’t look like layers, just an almost blunt cut of too short tufts at the front.
Sat here crying as it looks so ridiculous. Can’t go to the hairdresser as they can’t cut that part even shorter, plus i’m far too embarrassed too
How long will it take to grow?

Sun hats are your friend.
Bandana?
Hairband ?
DEMI??

Baskingintheheat · 04/08/2026 14:54

How long is a piece of string? Hair grows in average 1.5 cm a month and tends to grow faster in the summer. Make sure you are eating healthily to encourage hair growth. Massage and micro needling can help too.

Are you able to disguise the short bits by wearing a thick Alice band? Cutting it shorter will just extend the misery.

Notaboutthebass · 04/08/2026 14:54

The only thing you could do it shape the short bit into the long bit so it's slanted, are you able to do that?

What’s demi?

One side is much shorter than the other which isn’t as bad, it looks weird, but if I start trying to cut the longer side to match it, I know I will make it worse!

That was what I was trying initially, it’s just short and tufty, almost blunt cut across at front, too short I think to try to blend it in, am scared of making it worse

Do you have a regular hairdresser? They may fix it for free like they do a fringe if you visit often?

Toohotforallthisffs · 04/08/2026 15:01

The right hand side that I did first is actually passable, but the left too short, looks ridiculous. I can’t cut the right hand side to match it as too short.
I can just about get these front sections back into a bobble, with the rest down, but so short bits might come out
Never wanted to turn back time so much

I’m not bothered about paying, these are layers at the front, i’m not sure how they could make all of it a fringe.
I’m too embarrassed to show them 😩

when you say 'at the front' you don't mean like a fringe, but just the front layers framing your head? If so it's very easy to hide for the few weeks until they are long enough to go to a hairdressers - you can braid them back, twist them, use serum to do a very slicked back ponytail, use a kirby grip to clip them, use a headband, etc.

In the nicest way possible, nobody else notices minor details of our appearance as much as we do ourselves. I shaved off half my eyebrows once (and not the end half 🤣 was absolutely paranoid about the drawn on versions but nobody noticed until I told them!

Yes that’s it but they’re so short and sticking out. Tried before and can just about get them back into a hair tie but then they ping out!
Do you think could only be a few weeks for this part?

Notaboutthebass · 04/08/2026 15:05

Can you clip them back, does it affect your fringe?
I hate having hair problems but luckily my hair grows incredibly quickly especially taking magnesium.

They've seen everything. Honestly just let them fix it

Gardenisablooming · 04/08/2026 15:07

Demi Moore. As in shave it all off !

NotAnotherScarf · 04/08/2026 15:14

Or can you buy some gel and slick it all back, perhaps with a pony tail at the back or just tie a cloth round 50s rockabilly style with the length out of the back

JoshLymanSwagger · 04/08/2026 15:19

How quickly does your hair grow?
How much "extra" do you need on the shorter/scruffy side?

That will tell you how long it will take, but you probably need to add a month or so before you can get it cut back into shape by a pro.

ElusiveSunshine · 04/08/2026 15:27

Not to extend your embarrassment OP but are you able to post a picture? Particularly the short side that went askew and we can better understand how it’s sitting and hopefully advise on possible remedies?

Solidarity though, I didn’t cut it myself but once got a hack job from a hairdresser who was very distracted chatting to people behind her in the salon, hair was ridiculously short and so thinned out looked like rat tails. Was heavily pregnant at the time too gee thanks for that Susan, just what I needed the world crappiest haircut before diving into child birth 🙄

Tell them your kids/grandkids/nephew whatever got hold of some scissors and cut it when you were asleep.

lulubalu · 04/08/2026 15:33

What's your AIBU?

If it's AIBU to think I can cut my hair myself as well as the hairdresser does then yes YABU

Message your hairdresser and ask for an urgent appointment and she/he will take it from there.

Use an alice band or kirbies in the mean time to get it off your face and near to a pony tail.

AIBU to want to see a photo?🤔
AIBU to ask why you did this?

fishonabicycle · 04/08/2026 15:35

If they are long enough to be pulled back into a bobble they aren't actually very short at all! You are making it sound like Richard the third!

Tel12 · 04/08/2026 15:36

Put the scissors away, make an appointment and get a hairdresser to sort it out. Tie a scarf over your head if need be.

Hephebe · 04/08/2026 15:36

It doesn’t quite make it, I have to pull very tightly, then it pings out in tufts 😫

I had my fringe massacred once. I just had to wear a headband until it grew out.

ElusiveSunshine · 04/08/2026 15:55

Ok it sounds fixable OP! It’s long enough to almost get in a band so is enough for a capable hairdresser to work with. Maybe go to a new one (that rates well) and just say it has ended up too short and choppy and you need help to balance it, if you don’t have a fringe maybe getting one could help soften up the short lengths at the sides?
It always feels the WORST on the day (of hair disaster days) and will normally settle down after a wash or two into something workable - strength and solidarity Toohot you GOT this! 💪
