Just cut my own hair-totally ruined it!

I have long hair and have trimmed it once before using the ponytail method and it was fine.
I did this again today and it looked nice, just a basic trim.
Then I looked at the front layers as they needed trimming.
I followed a tutorial but have completely wrecked my hair. It’s uneven at the front, just tufts of hair, cut far too short, they don’t look like layers, just an almost blunt cut of too short tufts at the front.
Sat here crying as it looks so ridiculous. Can’t go to the hairdresser as they can’t cut that part even shorter, plus i’m far too embarrassed too
How long will it take to grow?

I did this. The double unicorn cut on youtube I think its called. Past shoulder-length hair all one length. Wanted a wolf cut - thought Id look edgy rock chick - came out like the Tiger King mullet. It was sooooooo bad. You have to go to the hairdresser. Mine fixed mine as best she could (I thought it was unsalavable). I had to have a ridiculously heavy fringe and heavy layers but it worked, and it did recover.

I recently had a spiral perm when I already have curly hair. I thought it would make my life easier as I was always faffing with products trying to tame the frizz and have defined curls. It looks fucking awful. It has absolutely destroyed my hair, I had to have it all cut out basically into a short do. Its grown out a bit now and looks better. But I feel your pain - and that i did at the hairdressers. I never bloody learn.

Bless you OP, we’ve all done it! I’d say you’ve got two options:

1. Play around with kirby grips and hair bands etc until you can find a way to style it that isn’t too bad. Then wait for it to grow out.
2. Go to the hairdresser, go through the pain barrier of embarrassment and lose quite a lot of the length at the back to have a hair cut that actually looks good. You might even like it better?

From your photo it actually doesn't look so bad. I would book a stylist to sort it out for you. I am sure it will be handled well for you.

Adding to the chorus....I did the same thing but it looked far worse. My hairdresser worked a miracle on it. Just go, they honestly won't care a jot!

When I did a disastrous home hair cut I went to the hairdressers and said help me, I got plasticine in my hair and had to cut it out. Don't be embarrassed, be creative. Just to add I taught Nursery so it was plausible 🙂

U can tell hairdressers it was a friend, etc who did it to save you feeling any embarrassment 😀

It looks easily fixable at the hairdressers from the photo.

Cutting your own hair is a silly thing to do. Make an appointment with a hairdresser. Im sure they've seen DIY haircuts before. Stay away from the scissors in future.

I ruined my hair with a COVID self cut and it took a few years for it to properly blend and look normal again. I could have had a short chop to get rid of the weird step I created in my layers but I didn't want that so I had the hairdresser try to blend it in more and more every time I went but yeah, it took ages, sorry :(

Just tell them you let a friend do it and she messed it up. One look on YouTube and you’ll see people do all sorts of crazy with their hair every day. When I was younger I used to have to do the walk of shame into my hairdressers all the time 🤷‍♀️.. they’re used of it!

I had a bloody awful haircut just before my daughter was born. One side was really short etc. I put it in a side parting to cover the crap side. Took 6 months to grow out but then it was fine

I would ring the hairdressers. Explain. They may be able to suggest an alternative style.

Just wear it pulled back for a few weeks, using a wax stick to smooth back the layers that are too short.

Yes! It will have grown a bit, and I’d then recommend going to a stylist.

No. You keep asking this but it won't change the outcome. You've got really thick, full hair like mine and you've cut way back into the length. It won't grow enough to blend back in with the layers for a few years. You can have a shorter cut which will remove the step and could look great but as for long layers they will not recover for a long time. I'm sorry!

This is the length you've cut off that needs to grow back before the layers will blend again. That's years of growth, not weeks

Go to the hairdresser. Even cry. They will help!

Id really go to a hairdresser. They will have seen everything and will have seen worse. My child once cut their hair just before a wedding they were part of. I'm talking about sticky up tufts. The hairdresser worked a miracle and blended it so it wasn't tufty anymore

Oh dear. French braids and pins as other have said will clip the dodgy bit out the way for now and might look quite pretty depending on your personal style. I've used French braids when growing out a fringe gets to an annoying stage, or I have done a dodgy home trim on a fringe! Or as someone else said that looks like it could become a wolf cut quite nicely (cut by a professional).

But, you really need to go to a professional. Asks friends or relatives or social media to recommend a kind and friendly one. Or there are mobile hairdressers out there so it would just be you and them in your house, so might be less embarrassing. They'd have seen it all before, a kind one will help you and understand your pain! Good luck.

I had a bad haircut in a salon once. Got a wig and wore it for a few months. Problem solved!
