Jabs to lose 1.5 stone?

torquayturkey · 02/08/2026 12:45

I’m 5’7 and feel my best when I’m between 10.5-11st. A couple of years ago I had a really bad time with my mental health (ended up sectioned) and lost 3 stone, making me 9st and I looked too thin. I’m much better now and I’ve gained 3st - I’m now 12st 4 and feel disgusting.

is it worth trying a GLP-1 to lost the 1-2 stone? I’m mainly worried about the side effects eg vomiting and stomach pains. What is everyone’s experience? Thank you.

You won’t qualify as your BMI is too low.
You can lose that in about 10 weeks on a very low carb diet. Chuck in some intermittent fasting or ADF. Jobs a good’un and you get to save about £2000

Really? I’m surprised at that because my BMI is 24/25 and out of interest I recently filled in a questionnaire with Voy for weight loss tablets.
According to them I do qualify and could expect to drop to 8 stone something from my current 10 stone.

Backpedaling with pendantry isn't a good look. You implied you know better than them and their prescriber. And you have no way of knowing whether those calories are safe for that poster, or whether rapid weight loss is advisable for them. Again, just because rapid weight loss isn't a good thing for you doesn't mean that applies to everyone. Try thinking outside of your own perspective for a second.

Backpedaling? I literally repeated what I said. You are the one adding arms and legs here.

Even the private guidelines say for weight loss you must have an additional co-morbidity requirement to be prescribed Mounjaro in the first instance with a BMI of 27-29.9. <27 You can't start on it at all, but you can restart if you've already had it.

Well the good news is that with the OPs current BMI she only needs to have a big drink before getting on the scales and it’ll show over 27 :)

There are private prescribers who will start on the lower BMIs - even though it goes against the guidelines - as a preventative measure. It's classed as off label prescribing (but it is still prescribed by a clinician)

If you don't have a related health condition then you won't get Mounjaro at BMI 27. I started at BMI 29 as I have PCOS. I went back onto 2.5mg recently to try to get to 10.5/11 stone as my weight has crept up slightly again.

Voy prescribe over 25 without additional health conditions.

SunnySunnyDayz · 02/08/2026 17:50

I only wanted to lose 1 stone. 5'5 and 11 st 3. Definitely something wrong with me, I could diet but to lose weight I had to go very low calorie which made me tired and mentally foggy. I'm on hrt, had fixed blood work issues but just could not lose weight.

Bmi was 26, I got wegovy from Voy and ever went above the 2nd dose, so 0.5mg. 4 months in now and I've lost a little over a stone and my joint pain is much reduced.

I have never had much appetite reduction or less food noise but I've lost weight eating more than I was when I was dieting. It must be the increased insulin sensitivity or anti-inflammatory action. These are both medical issues, I've no issues taking it for this.

It’s not magic.

You will still need to control everything that you eat, track intake, put the work in.

The jags are expensive and you will need to complete a health questionnaire which will be assessed by a pharmacist, they can and do say no to prescribing the drug.

I have Mounjaro. I have nausea, headaches and feel very unwell after each weekly jag, 11 months on.
I have entire months where I loose zero yet am tracking, restricting and surviving on under 900 cals a day. As I say, it’s not magic.

you have months where you lose nothing? why are you continuing? id be gutted. i lose 1kg a week on average. lowest was 0.7kg (fuming) and highest was 1.8kg. I was stoked then.

I'd love to see the study that backs up this claim. The NHS recommends a deficit of around 600 and eating in a deficit of 1500+ is going to cause loss of muscle and bone density, as well as increase the risk of gallstones and hair loss. This kind of deficit falls under a VLCD and shouldn't be done for longer than 12 weeks.

Also if you do resistance training whilst increasing your protein significantly then you can actually prevent loss, and potentially even gain muscle whilst working to a very significant calorie deficit. 🤷‍♀️

Bone density would unlikely be a problem unless it was long term and there were significant deficits in various vitamins, but you can also add in supplements.

is the jab making it easier to make better choices with your food? since you aren’t having the same cravings?

I wouldn’t bother to argue, they won’t agree even though you’re right

SunnySunnyDayz · 02/08/2026 17:56

For cost info, my first pen with voy was £160 I think for 4 0.25mg doses, next from Swift doctor £100 for 4 0.5mg doses, next pen £100 for 4 1mg doses but I'm taking half doses so it lasts 8 weeks - which is approved life of a pen.

So ongoing it's costing me about £13 a week.

My choices were already near perfect, I'd been with Zoe for a couple of years and ate very little upf, 30 plants a week, etc.

However there was definitely a period where I just wasn't bothered about food, I'd fancy a chocolate biscuit and would eat it if someone gave me one but cba to go to the cupboard to get one.

I think I do still feel this way a little, food is less interesting.

VideoVox · 02/08/2026 17:59

@Gardenflowering I had a similarly terrible time on MJ last year, gave up after 3 months. I’ve just started Wegovy pills, just a few days in but no side effects except very mild nausea. Maybe worth changing over?

Yep, or I put 3 or 4lbs ON! Go figure, 700-900 cals a day and I gain weight or do not lose anything. This can go on for 4-5 weeks at a time.
BUT my clothes are hanging off me.

Thankypu peri & menopause, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. It is frustratingly difficult and impossible.

You are not eating enough calories to fuel your body properly and that rapid weight loss isn’t something to be pleased about.

💯

Yeah it just helps you to not grab the chocolate or biscuit doesn’t it. For me it stops me going looking for a sugary alcoholic drink, which I would then chase with a takeaway.

Really? Are you exercising as well? I had a few weeks where I lost nothing and I eat under 600 a day, and one day I fasted, sometimes two. It was just so weird. BUT my clothes were smaller. I wonder why that happens?? Is this common. I swim 3/4 times a week now too.

Ok, thanks. I didn't know they could go against the guidelines.

Ok, thanks. I didn't know they could go against the guidelines.

Off label prescribing is pretty common for many drugs. Eg I was prescribed an anti depressant years ago to help with my sleep, it's not in the guidelines to be prescribed with sleep but drowsiness was a common side effect.

The prescriber has to make it clear that it's off label though and what difference that makes eg in terms of efficacy (if there isnt a evidence base for the alternative use, ie because studies haven't been done for that purpose) And not all companies will be willing to prescribe off label.

i had my first injection on Friday morning. I was expecting horrible side effects. Friday night I felt extremely full after less than half a Chinese. This feeling lasted until the morning. I didn’t sleep well.

saturday the full feeling lasted all day but I was able to eat. Saturday night was better.

on Friday and Saturday I had a slight sore head that felt like dehydration. I made sure I drank water all day.

Sunday I feel fine and have slight hunger again when I haven’t eaten for a while.

think the trick is to eat plain for the first couple of days and drink plenty of water. don’t eat more than half what you normally would and see how you feel. I found I wasn’t feeling full straight away so maybe I have to eat slower as in the first couple of days I was eating too much.

But I don’t understand, why have a Chinese if you have jabbing to lose weight?

Because having an occasional Chinese is ok, it’s not realistic to think you’re going to keep weight off if you have to be “good” all the time. WLI shouldn’t be a diet, diets don’t work in the long term. You’ve got to learn to eat in a balanced way, and sometimes a takeaway is part of that, maybe it was someone’s birthday, maybe it was pay day, who knows, but nothing is off limits to me.

Boreded · 02/08/2026 22:35

But I don’t understand, why have a Chinese if you have jabbing to lose weight?

Lots of potential reasons:
Not wanting to stand out from family/ friends
A last hurrah before expecting the WLI to start working
Little appetising food left in the house at the end of a busy week
Not wanting to do something obvious to indicate that you're trying to lose weight/ take WLIs because of the risk of unsupportive comments.
A treat for starting leave from work/ special occasion.
Recognising that living exclusively on a heavily restricted low calorie "clean" diet is not going to work in real world conditions.

It wasn't me, but I can see why someone would.

I went out to eat on Friday night. Tried to chose something a bit more modest on the menu but still appealling that I wouldn't eat at home, and just stopped when my stomach was comfortable and left some spare food on the plate.
It was just nice to have a break from my own kitchen after thinking about what picky teenagers will eat for umpteen meals per week.

Yeah the occasional Chinese is absolutely ok, of course it is but the poster had it on day 2 of the diet though, might as well have waited and jabbed the day after.

Yeah of course have the Chinese or treat, I just don’t understand why a person would do it 1 day after having a jab that is known to have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion. Have the Chinese and then jab the next day or say no to the Chinese until you can tell how your body is coping.

Day 2 on the diet is pretty early to have a treat meal
