Not to want to wash my hair over a sink with a bloody sieve?!

Ok first world problems, but DH, DS, DD and I are staying with my elderly aunt and uncle. They have a massive house with modern bathrooms but DA had just told me that I cannot wash my shoulder length hair in the shower as it will block the drains, “But it’s ok as you can wash it over the sink and catch all the hair in a sieve”! FFS!!!

If I try to do this the water will go everywhere (the basin is tiny), the shampoo and conditioner will go in my eyes if I bend forward, and if I try to kneel backwards it will give me severe neck pain (and water everywhere again).

I normally wash my hair every three days which should have been last night, and we don’t go home until tomorrow. And we’re in the middle of nowhere without a car, though I’m going to have to insist on a diversion on our day trip to buy some dry shampoo.

I’m really annoyed she didn’t tell me this before hand as at least I could have washed my hair just before coming. And what about my 11 year old who has really long thick hair? Mercifully she’s not due to wash hair until tomorrow, but if it had needed washing sooner we’d be stuffed.

Oh. Fair enough. I feel quite proud of mine then. It’s just me and DS at home but we are blessed with lots of hair!
I do pull all the hair out very regularly.

I hope I never get to the stage where hosting people goes from how I can make their stay as comfortable as possible to making up these ridiculous rules. It was the same going to visit my husband’s grandparents, they monitored everything we did, down to the use of toilet roll, calling us wasteful about everything and served the tiniest meals imaginable.

Obviously, it’s unpleasant if hosts are not welcoming and generous, but if that’s not the case, do you not you take that as a sign possibly that their hosting days are over?

It’s usually possible to stay in a nearby hotel. And if that’s not an option, like it or not, they are doing you a favour.

I don’t mean to sound like a grump but I have hosted friends and family a lot over the years and it can get exhausting when you are older which is probably colouring my judgement. My point is that when I was a couple of decades younger, and staying with older relatives, I could never imagine the drop in energy levels to come!

I think hair clogs in drains used to be an issue back in the day, in older bathrooms with older pipes and drain systems. My mum also has an issue around hairs in plugs, and after washing her hair, will meticulously pick out every single hair she can see. I find it a bit odd, gotta say.

For this time I agree with posters saying leave it until you get home. Unless you're going to see people before you can shower in which case detour for some dry shampoo!

I don’t think it will hurt to not wash your hair for another day.

They are returning home tomorrow where they can enjoy their own shower.... But a good purchase for future visits to Auntie.

Please use the shower as I want to see if it starts a catastrophic flood.

At the end of the trip gather up all the revolting hair you’ve collected during your stay and proudly show it off to show how considerate you’ve been.

Even if they have clog-prone drains, you were only staying a short time. Seems unlikely you'd be clogging their drains that quickly. I'd try to prevent hair going down the drain, but I probably wouldn't wash my hair in the sink or skip washing it altogether. Not very hospitable of them to request it!

I had long hair for two or three years after covid and the drain didn't get plugged up unnessarily more than I do now with shorter hair.

We have one of those things you put over the plug hole that catches all the hair. Can’t you supply them with one of them?

Just pop into a salon and just ask for a wash and blow dry. Some salons don’t need appointments.

But the OP has stated that this isn't the case. They aren't rural and have had new bathrooms/plumbing installed. There isn't a water shortage were they are. If there was that would be the perfect excuse to not visit and add to the usage. You don't treat guests like this. Every water shortage is because of mismanagement and not spending some if the profits on adding/replacing inadequate equipment. The world getting hotter and dryer hasn't come out of the blue. Nor has the rise in the adult population.
