Not to want to wash my hair over a sink with a bloody sieve?!

Ok first world problems, but DH, DS, DD and I are staying with my elderly aunt and uncle. They have a massive house with modern bathrooms but DA had just told me that I cannot wash my shoulder length hair in the shower as it will block the drains, “But it’s ok as you can wash it over the sink and catch all the hair in a sieve”! FFS!!!

If I try to do this the water will go everywhere (the basin is tiny), the shampoo and conditioner will go in my eyes if I bend forward, and if I try to kneel backwards it will give me severe neck pain (and water everywhere again).

I normally wash my hair every three days which should have been last night, and we don’t go home until tomorrow. And we’re in the middle of nowhere without a car, though I’m going to have to insist on a diversion on our day trip to buy some dry shampoo.

I’m really annoyed she didn’t tell me this before hand as at least I could have washed my hair just before coming. And what about my 11 year old who has really long thick hair? Mercifully she’s not due to wash hair until tomorrow, but if it had needed washing sooner we’d be stuffed.

Similar to how my mum is without any water shortages. It’s called being tight. I am no longer allowed to stay at her house so I have to save up for expensive caravan sites just to visit so at least you are allowed to stay.

the answer is to wash your hair over the largest bucket tip water into smaller one take to garden to water plants. Enjoy!

They do have a system with lots of barrels outside which collect rainwater. But the grey water from the house isn’t plumbed in to it, maybe it’s not very easy to do.

Send them a hair catcher for the shower drain from Amazon so they can’t argue next time. Some people have really bizarre beliefs - my friends landlord (lodger type) insisted she wash her hair in a bucket that then used to flush the toilet. She was paying her £1200 a month for rent and bills!

Is your or your DD's hair going to fall out if you don't stick to your "scheduled" haiir washing day? Seriously. I'd just wait until you get home.

Just tell her you will put the sieve upside down over the drain in the shower - that way the hair will be caught in the sieve and no blocked drains

Because it’s making your guests uncomfortable and unhappy. Do what you want yourself but it’s shockingly bad hospitality.

All you have to do is get a sinkhole cover. We have one for our bath for when I get a shower. My head hair is really thick and did block the pipes. Not had trouble since soong this.

For now, use the sieve to catch the hairs when getting a shower, turn it upside down voila.

My mother is in her eighties, lives in a modern house with two bathrooms, walk in shower etc but still insists on washing her hair over the sink! Must be a generational thing. At least she doesn’t tell her visitors to do the same though. She also bathes in two inches of water, won’t use the shower.

Have we really been really that brainwashed by the greedy water companies, that we don't care about hygiene and the comfort of our guests? It's been raining here on Merseyside, as well as other areas, there's no real water shortage, it's mismanagement.
If elderly people are going to come up with ridiculous house rules, then they don't get visits, it's on them. This generation of pensioners grew up with baths and flushing toilets (unless rural etc).

Her bathrooms can't be that modern if the shower doesn't have a trap.

Maybe they are rural.
If they were young in the late 40s, they are used to outside toilets, remembering having to collect water from the pump as no mains (yes this was rural).

And in our house in the 80s we didn't have a shower and had to wash our hair over the sink once a week.

And there's massive shortages where I am in the SE.

If it does have to be an annual thing, just go for 2 or 3 days rather than a longer stay and you’ll know to wash hair right before you go and also take dry shampoo?!

I'm old and I wash my hair in the shower and wouldn't dream of washing it anywhere else. About once every 12 months the drain starts to get blocked with hair and soap and I notice the water drains slowly, I put a bit of drain cleaner down and its ok for the next year. One bottle of drain cleaner usually does the kitchen and other sinks in the house plus shower. Simples.

I would wash it in the shower and put the sieve over the plug in the shower, what's the difference between the shower plug and the sink plug, they will both run into the same drain.

I think it’s fair enough for them to do it themselves, but not to impose it on others. It makes being a guest very uncomfortable as you are not used to it.
