Not to want to wash my hair over a sink with a bloody sieve?!

Ok first world problems, but DH, DS, DD and I are staying with my elderly aunt and uncle. They have a massive house with modern bathrooms but DA had just told me that I cannot wash my shoulder length hair in the shower as it will block the drains, “But it’s ok as you can wash it over the sink and catch all the hair in a sieve”! FFS!!!

If I try to do this the water will go everywhere (the basin is tiny), the shampoo and conditioner will go in my eyes if I bend forward, and if I try to kneel backwards it will give me severe neck pain (and water everywhere again).

I normally wash my hair every three days which should have been last night, and we don’t go home until tomorrow. And we’re in the middle of nowhere without a car, though I’m going to have to insist on a diversion on our day trip to buy some dry shampoo.

I’m really annoyed she didn’t tell me this before hand as at least I could have washed my hair just before coming. And what about my 11 year old who has really long thick hair? Mercifully she’s not due to wash hair until tomorrow, but if it had needed washing sooner we’d be stuffed.

Put the seive upside down over the drain hole of the shower. Weight it down with something heavy to keep it in place. Don't tell them. Gather up the hair and put it in the bon when you have finished.

Just tell her that it’s not workable. Absolutely insane request! You can offer to clear out the drains after each use, but absolutely no need to wash your hair in the sink. Maybe offer to use the sieve in the shower if it puts her mind at ease.

Just ignore her and have the shower. Pretend you washed your hair separately over the sink.

Can’t you put the sieve over the shower drain somehow? (Just to appease them.)

Well it is bizarre but I’m pretty sure neither you or your DD will suffer from not washing your hair for an extra day so I’d just tie it up and wait til you get home.

get a tea strainer or some muslin to put over the plughole in the shower

As long as you clear any visible hair from the plug hole, she's not going to know whether you've washed it in the shower or sink.

If they are expecting you not to do a very very ordinary and normal thing like wash your hair in the shower then quite frankly i would leave.
That is just so unreasonable and unnecessary it's ridiculous

She should have warned you but probably didn't think of it.
You could make a sieve for the shower drain out of a pair of tights or even a flannel. Hold it in place with your feet and run the water slowly. You will catch most the hair.

Well this is what I first thought of, put the hair sieve in the bath and wash your hair over the bath, They sound batty op how long are you there for ?

I would wash it in the shower. How can one or two hair washes possibly block a drain unless you are shaving your head in there. Old people (I am one myself) get fixations sometimes and you will not change them. I would be stuffed as I wash my hair everyday. My hairdresser has a lady who only washes her hair every couple of months. Yuk

Will it matter if you miss washing your hair?

How inhospitable. I would be ignoring the completely bonkers request and would wash my hair as normal. If you're not allowing guests to do perfectly normal things such as wash their hair in the shower then i think any logic of my house my rules goes out the window.

She is never going to know unless she insists on being in the bathroom with you!

Just clean the shower drain afterwards if you are worried about it.

Im another one who would wash my hair as usual. Unless they are going to sit in the bathroom and watch, how on earth would they know? Just clean any hairs up once done.

Given that you and your DD don’t wash your hair every day (I presume you don’t as you said you would have washed it before you visited) I wouldn’t worry about it though. Just leave it an extra day.

why cant you put the sieve over the plug but use the shower?
