Overnight flushing

Maybe my titles a bit deceiving! I'm talking toilet flushing here!
Dh and I disagree about this. He doesn't like anyone flushing the toilet overnight as says it wakes everyone up. He says it's normal for people not to flush overnight.
I think it's disgusting. I don't want to be weeing on another person's pee!
So am I being unreasonable here?

Team flush here, but then the sound of a flush has never once woken me up.

If I walked into the bathroom to a bowl full of pee in the morning I’d be fuming.

Cannybeme · 31/07/2026 00:51

Toilet flusher at all hours here!

Changeaboutnow · 31/07/2026 00:54

You must all be extremely light sleepers if the sound of a toilet flush wakes everybody up.
Either that or your plumbing needs checking out.

sweetpickle2 · 31/07/2026 00:55

Also presumably (hopefully?) he would flush if he had to go number 2 in the night, so why not do it for wees?

GrumpyPanda · 31/07/2026 00:59

Depends entirely on the condition and location of your pipes and also if we're talking about a fickle prostate.

SnowFrogJelly · 31/07/2026 01:00

Do you realise there’s a water shortage

maybe time to be less childish about a bit of wee

Exactly! The smell reminds me of a mens urinal. Eew

We have an incredibly noisy plumbing system (is due to be revamped next year as part of a house renovation) so we are non flush for pee, and go downstairs if it's a no.2 and flush it as downstairs toilet not so noisy. Upstairs toilet is very noisy and wakes people up every time

ReadingSoManyThreads · 31/07/2026 01:22

We don't flush in the night. I go crazy if I get woken up so everyone knows not to flush the loo before I wake up!

When we stayed at a relatives recently, they wake up for the day at 4am, which is only about 2 hours after I go to bed, they were constantly flushing the loo in the bathroom that was next to our room (when they could have used a different loo, knowing we were asleep), god, it was awful being constantly woken up by flushing!

NCTDN · 31/07/2026 01:24

If it’s family, what’s the odour of you’re just having a wee? I would wake up every time. Def a non flusher here for wees.

caringcarer · 31/07/2026 01:24

Flush every time.

NCTDN · 31/07/2026 01:24

Issue not odour!!

Happyjoe · 31/07/2026 01:26

My mum banned us as kids because she could hear it loudly at night but I hated it. I'd rather be woken up than wake up to another persons stale pee.

DoAWheelie · 31/07/2026 01:29

I only flush roughly every third pee as I'm on diuretics and go every 10-20 mins for around 6 hours after taking them. I can't bear to waste so much water flushing every time.

There has been exactly 0 consequences for "peeing onto pee" so it's just a weird hangup you have and not a real issue. If you are waking him up during the night then try being a bit more considerate. Undisturbed sleep is far more important to health than avoiding an irrational "ick".

HelenaWilson · 31/07/2026 01:30

If noise is the issue, have a bucket of water to hand and chuck that down? Half a bucket would probably do.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/07/2026 01:42

I have heard that if you put your foot in the bowl when you flush the toilet, it deadens the sound.
P.S. I've not tried it myself.
P.P.S. Don't do this if...well just don't always do it.

Maraudingmarauders · 31/07/2026 01:42

We don’t flush in the night (en-suite) but accept guests will. A flush would wake me up, though tbh so does the walk to the bathroom/opening and closing the door. Also wakes DS (2) which is what we are trying to avoid!
First person in at a reasonable AM time (6am+, or earlier if DS already up) just flushes it all away, no drama. Mostly we go in the dark without turning a light on so you never see it. Window is usually open so no smell. Obviously we would flush for no2 but aside from upset stomachs that never really happens between 11pm-6am and if you’re poorly no one is going
to complain!

minipie · 31/07/2026 01:56

Non flushers for wee at night here, family of light sleepers

AlwayAnxious · 31/07/2026 02:06

When i got with partner he was a night time non flusher
I soon changed that
I dont wanna pee on pee and the smell is nasty

EleanorMc67 · 31/07/2026 02:17

If pee smells that much, I don't think people are drinking enough water! And if there's a bowl full of pee they must have very large bladders, as pee will partly go down the loo anyway, without being flushed.

It's just me & my partner in our household & we generally don't flush after peeing once or twice (as we're lefty greeny types ... 😁). We do if we have people visiting/staying. But our loo doesn't smell anyway. Admittedly I drink gallons of water as I get thirsty easily.

Conversationalcheddar · 31/07/2026 03:10

If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down.

Itsyourcircussodontusemyclowns · 31/07/2026 07:53

I am team flush too.
But your solution is easy! You don't flush and he can sit on your pee in the morning.
And he flushes for you.
Solved😄

HoldMyWine · 31/07/2026 07:55

We don’t flush overnight. You need to drink more water if your pee smells that bad.
