Overnight flushing

Maybe my titles a bit deceiving! I'm talking toilet flushing here!
Dh and I disagree about this. He doesn't like anyone flushing the toilet overnight as says it wakes everyone up. He says it's normal for people not to flush overnight.
I think it's disgusting. I don't want to be weeing on another person's pee!
So am I being unreasonable here?

Is your bed directly on the other side of the wall to the toilet or is your toilet especially loud? This was the case in about half the houses I grew up in - loud, old plumbing in farmhouses where my dad and stepmum lived, and a tiny new build HA property with my mum. In that case IME it's reasonable to avoid flushing at night as much as possible.

In our current house neither is an issue and the water is very hard so I much prefer flushing at night otherwise the toilet builds up a disgusting layer of stained limescale which stinks when you dissolve or scrape it off, and it's tricky to reach all the way back in the U-bend.

Flush, always, and every time.
I dont want pee sitting in a bowl "mellowing" its odour everywhere.

Deadringer · 31/07/2026 12:16

It depends how loud it is i suppose. The water tank was above our bedroom and it was very noisy for ages after flushing so we used to avoid flushing. It was a bit gross though so since the tank was moved we always flush.

Exactly! The smell reminds me of a mens urinal. Eew

There really should be no smell.

If DH needs to pee in the night he doesn't flush because it would wake me and it never smells in the morning

HoldMyWine · 31/07/2026 11:47

Some of you need to get your kidneys tested.

Nope, kidneys are fine - but urine that’s left to stagnate for hours smells. It’s normal.

sweetpickle2 · 31/07/2026 12:20

The people on this thread who think their piss doesn't stink are deluded.

Yes, healthy urine shouldn't smell- but if it's been sat there all night it doesn't matter how healthy it is.

mydogisthebest · 31/07/2026 12:20

pinkandwhiteroses · 31/07/2026 11:45

Always flush. It absolutely stinks otherwise.

Well it shouldn't so whoever it is peeing should drink more water and/or see a doctor

GotANewFrockTooFuckingFat · 31/07/2026 12:20

We squeeze a bit of Harpic down the bog after a night time wee to mask any smells. Then flush after we've both had first piddles of the day.

FairyBatman · 31/07/2026 12:21

If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down!

Put the lid down so it doesn’t smell, not that it should smell that bad anyway!

Æthelred · 31/07/2026 12:21

Urine will stain the bowl if it is left for too long.

I can assure you it does not smell and I have a very good sense of smell

It’s called being nose blind.

It really doesn't. I'm one of those who doesn't flush everytime.... I have a white toilet and its not stained at all. I use a regular toilet cleaner and I've never had an issue with staining. If you live in a really hard water area you may find limescale is responsible for the staining.

BadLad · 31/07/2026 12:28

I flush every time and think not flushing is fucking rank.

dudsville · 31/07/2026 12:29

I am a light sleeper. When we used the bedroom with the ensuite, I hated it. Since moving to a different bedroom, we use different toilets in the night, he goes to his and I go to mine. We can do what we want without compromise. It's a level of privilege often overlooked.

sweetpickle2 · 31/07/2026 00:55

Also presumably (hopefully?) he would flush if he had to go number 2 in the night, so why not do it for wees?

Who on earth goes for a shit in the middle of the night? Your gut relaxes over night and it just doesn't happen.

We don't flush over night, our water system is noisy - but our wee doesn't smell.

Vaxtable · 31/07/2026 12:42

I flush and no it doesn’t wake everyone up. And if it does you will soon get used to it and sleep through

Yes it does. I have colitis if I need to go I need to go and have been woken up to go

and what about upset stomachs gastritis etc

what about those who come home after late shifts and need to go?

NCTDN · 31/07/2026 12:44

Interesting poll results so far!

ReyRey12 · 31/07/2026 12:45

Team flush. I don't want to pee on top of someone elses pee.

Morelovelyandtemperate · 31/07/2026 12:54

You can always just flush first thing BEFORE peeing?

mydogisthebest · 31/07/2026 12:55

BadLad · 31/07/2026 12:28

I think flushing every time is selfish when overnight and a waste of water during the day.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I can assure you I am not nose blind but you carry on believing pee always smells and wasting water

wishingonastar101 · 31/07/2026 12:58

No night flushing here!

However this does backfire sometimes... we have old plumbing and the girls like to use lots of loo roll. so if multiple night wees don't get flushed then someone does a massive morning poo it's rubber glove time.

malefields · 31/07/2026 12:58

It would depend how often but generally speaking I’m always team flushing.
