Overnight flushing

Maybe my titles a bit deceiving! I'm talking toilet flushing here!
Dh and I disagree about this. He doesn't like anyone flushing the toilet overnight as says it wakes everyone up. He says it's normal for people not to flush overnight.
I think it's disgusting. I don't want to be weeing on another person's pee!
So am I being unreasonable here?

Urine will stain the bowl if it is left for too long.

Utter bollocks. No-one is suggesting you leave it to sit for weeks on end, just overnight.

What a ridiculous waste of drinking water, especially during a drought!!!

If you insist on flushing overnight, then at least use waste water from your washing up bowl, although you probably only use a dishwasher and wash your 3 changes of clothes daily. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

LittleRobins · 31/07/2026 13:02

Ooh I don’t think I’ve ever seen a poll at 50/50 before, good one!

My husband flushes and it wakes me up, I’m a very light sleeper. I don’t flush so that I don’t wake anyone up. It’s one of those things that I wouldn’t admit to in ‘real life’ though. There is something a bit gross about it.

If pee smells that much, I don't think people are drinking enough water! And if there's a bowl full of pee they must have very large bladders, as pee will partly go down the loo anyway, without being flushed.

It's just me & my partner in our household & we generally don't flush after peeing once or twice (as we're lefty greeny types ... 😁). We do if we have people visiting/staying. But our loo doesn't smell anyway. Admittedly I drink gallons of water as I get thirsty easily.

Snap.

It's a waste of water to flush every pee.

parachutegirl · 31/07/2026 13:06

No flushing here overnight, but tbf it’s only me who wees in the night. Guess what, I don’t flush after every wee in the day either - “if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down”. It’s such a waste of water.
P.s. You weeing on top of someone else’s wee has no effect on you whatsoever, it’s not splashing up your bum!

Shoxfordian · 31/07/2026 13:11

Not flushing is disgusting so I'm with you op

SomehowItsMay · 31/07/2026 13:12

Toilet flush would wake me up. However, I wear ear plugs and use white noise. Team flush here. (Tell him to wear ear plugs).

BillieWiper · 31/07/2026 13:14

That reminds me of when I was a kid. I was barred permanently from my best mates house aged 13 for flushing the toilet after 9.30pm?! Apparently it woke the mum up.

I think if you have a rule about not flushing you obviously need to make it plain to everyone who may visit. It could be unpleasant for someone to go to the toilet in the night and find the bowl full of someone else's waste?

tomato22 · 31/07/2026 13:15

Peeing on pee? 😂

Butteredtoast55 · 31/07/2026 13:17

sweetpickle2 · 31/07/2026 00:51

Team flush here, but then the sound of a flush has never once woken me up.

If I walked into the bathroom to a bowl full of pee in the morning I’d be fuming.

100%

Who on earth goes for a shit in the middle of the night? Your gut relaxes over night and it just doesn't happen.

We don't flush over night, our water system is noisy - but our wee doesn't smell.

Lots of people do 🤷‍♀️

OriginalSkang · 31/07/2026 13:23

I don't want to smell anyone's wee. And yes, your wee does smell.

Flushing in the night doesn't bother me. Shutting doors without turning the handle does though! (looking at my DD here)

VictoriaEra · 31/07/2026 13:32

No toilet flush for overnight wees here. They do wake me and also my daughter.

"It just doesn't happen" you can't possibly know this- just because you don't shit in the night doesn't mean nobody else does! People have different body clocks, different toilet habits, different working patterns and routines.

Ellie1015 · 31/07/2026 13:57

I flush. If it woke my dh up I wouldnt. Sleep is important. I dont think it is unreasonable to ask family not to flush if it wakes you. Disturbed sleep much bigger inconvenience than first person in bathroom having to flush away a pee.

BlackCatBea · 31/07/2026 14:01

My DH is annoying in that if there’s wee in the toilet and he’s just about to wee in it (even standing up!) he flushes first!! Even though he’s stood there in wee pose!! Why not just go first then flush 🤯 He said he doesn’t like using it if there wee in there in case of splashes

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 31/07/2026 14:08

For people who don't flush surely you do if you are on your period?

UnintentionallyFabulous · 31/07/2026 14:21

I don’t flush the en suite at the request of DH as he is a really light sleeper and I need to go a couple of times a night. I drink loads of water though and unless I’ve had asparagus my pee is inoffensive.
On the rare nights DH needs to go he flushes because he drinks mostly coffee or beer and by his own admission isn’t pleasant.

Hahaha that’s funny between 11pm-4am are prime time for my body to decide it’s time to evacuate.

Always flush. Even the children get quite mardy if they go in the bathroom and someone hasn’t flushed no matter the time of day.

I don’t want my bathroom to smell like a public toilet.

Yes - if there is period blood in the bowl after use then I will flush. Also if I happen to have eaten asparagus or something that genuinely make the wee smell I will flush then. But otherwise as a general rule i will flush every 3 or 4 wees if that makes sense. Especially during the summer when water is in shorter supply.

My bathroom doesn't smell (Honestly it doesn't) and nothing has ever happened to me as a consequence.

maybe it's because I was brought up int he 70's??

Hotupnorth · 31/07/2026 14:47

I loathe non flushing. Flushing in the middle of the night doesn't bother me at all.

Wingingit73 · 31/07/2026 15:08

Flush or dont. Your choice.

mondaytosunday · 31/07/2026 15:10

I live alone most of the time and I don’t flush overnight. I’m not in a water meter either but think I’m saving water for us all (specially as we are on a hosepipe ban).

ThatCheeseNeedsEating · 31/07/2026 16:06

This is interesting. Didn't expect so many conflicting replies! Depends on all sorts then- how noisy your toilet is, whether the beds are near the toilet wall, whether you have hard water, whether there are light sleepers and whether you live alone. Also whether, when you're half sleep, you can be bothered to put a bit of toilet cleaner down after your wee.
I haven't even mentioned people not washing their hands in case of waking others up! That would start a separate debate!😄

I'm wfh today and have just been for a wee. DP said not to flush because he needed to go as well. In broad daylight and with no risk of waking anyone! The world did not end.
