Aibu to have reported the dustbin lorry to the council?

Bit of back story us and our next door neighbours quietly dislike each other. Nobody has really said anything but I know we both annoy each other from what is said about the street. They moan about us, things we do etc.

Recently they have been playing loud music in the garden at the weekends in a passive aggressive way. This started when they complained about our chickens being noisy ( we have rehomed the chickens because of this but thats another story) the reason I'm saying all of this is because in general I am just in a bad mood about our neighbours and don't know if this has tainted my reaction.

So next door neighbour is a bin man, he wasn't at work.
Bin lorry come and parks up across my drive . Workmen get out and go in neighbours house/garden for 40 minutes having a drink and break. All this time I was unable to get off or access my drive. There was a bin lorry parked unattended across it.

So husband rings to complain to the council. They were confused as on their tracker the lorry was supposedly elsewhere. They also agreed 40minutes was excessive but said they must have been emptying bins? No they were having a cuppa at my neighbours! Council are going to investigate, I suspect they were taking unauthorised breaks and turning the tracker off.. maybe.

Anyway the reason this has also annoyed me so much is our neighbours have lived hear 30+ years and act like they own the street. Complain about anything we do (leaves from our trees fall in their garden for example.) They are 60+ and set in their ways and we are a young family. Tbh I just dont think they like us, we normally don't rise to it and smile and wave etc. But this time I had had enough and complained.

Aibu? And have we just started ww3?

The bin men chose to block their friends neighbours drive . That’s on them.

Yes, likely stopping for a break is fine if a task and done authority. It’s a great benefit to an otherwise difficult job not many would want to do.

If they were just popping in to friends for a cuppa they could have blocked friends drive. But they didn’t so the question always is why? And the history of the neighbours would hint as to the reason.

However OP, I would take photos of the bin outside your house ready for collection for a few weeks in case they don’t collect it and accuse you of not putting it out.

Maybe the neighbours they were visiting is the only ne closest to the corner, so couldn’t park there safely?

It just keeps getting worse!! I've also now found out the reason it happened before around to weeks ago.
They pop past to empty the daughters garden waste bin so she doesn't have to pay the yearly subscription (not our bin day the dad is obviously on another garden waste round).
They then go for a cuppa at their mates the other side of me.

Im not going to further report the garden waste bin but wtf!

So, not only are the bin men asshats for blocking ONLY your drive, but are complicit in cheating the system by emptying the bins of one of the children of the bin men. How very "nice" of them. I wonder how many family members are getting the special service?
So, the extra petrol, time, etc. doesn't bother any of the hot air posters on here? Maybe because they see that as being okay too?

They blocked the neighbours drive as well, the OP was also concerned ( 🤔) about them not knowing where the bin men were! So it wasn’t ONLY her drive!

Tel12 · 01/08/2026 06:12

Well you will have to live with the repercussions of this for years to come. Hope it was worth it.

Well then, they could have parked across the daughter's drive since she gets her garden bin emptied for free? They both can't be on a corner.

Wouldn’t it have been simpler, easier, and less likely to start a feud to have just walked over and politely asked if the driver of the bin truck could please move it so you could get out of your drive? They could have easily moved it in under ten minutes and return to their tea. An “investigation” may set things off.

Exactly this, except the OP didn't actually need to use the drive. Falling out with neighbours can really damage your quality of life. You have to pick your battles.

Yes, maybe they could! But they didn’t and OP complained and the result is that she’s upset the neighbours the other side …..

She knew where they were, she didn’t need to go out, apparently the other times they were there she’s ne er needed to go in or out.

And let’s not forget the neighbours are 60+ which was more relevant than this had allegedly happened before.

Oh well OP is going to be popular with both sides now!

But sometimes falling out with neighbours is a consequence of THEIR behaviour.

OP has said the neighbours harass them and that’s what they don’t get on.

If you dish it out you have to be prepared to get shit back.

Tel12 · 01/08/2026 06:22

Maybe but ramping it up with the bin men may not be the way to go.

Her neighbors are already old, entitled, poorly behaved fuckwits, so I doubt that they can do much worse.

They’re 60s and still working, is that old?

100% this.
And I'd get a few more external cameras if I were you.

Absolute dick head behaviour but you have in all likelihood started ww3

Why more cameras? They’ve already captured it on one?

I am so confused!!
Can you clarify please?

  1. The neighbour you dont like wasn't even working at the time the dustcart blocked you in, so how would he be responsible or get in trouble for where some other Binmen parked?

  2. you said they empty the bin of a daughter of someone whose father works on a recycling round elsewhere. Yet the father got in big trouble at work. Why? He hadnt done anything wrong. He didn't empty her bin for free.

  3. how do you and your neighbours know whether she pays for garden waste or not?

I also find it hard to understand why the whole team would want to delay their finish by driving to another road to empty the garden waste bin of a daughter of someone whose dad works on another team.It just seems very unlikely!

Bumpyroads · 01/08/2026 06:34

Don't worry we had already fallen out way before this. Its was pretty clear they didn't like us when she said "alright fatty" to me when I was pregnant.

The other side are not upset with us. Infact I was chatting to them in their kitchen when she told me, she said she told her dad he cant being do stuff like that. We are good friends and regularly chat go to each other's houses etc.

We live in semi detached houses it is quite easy for us both to live on the corner. Its a junction, and people come round fast despite it being a 30.

Yes its happened before, I let it go, this time it got to me. Didn't mention it in original post as its hard to write breastfeeding a 1 year old trying to grab your face, I forgot

2 - yes the father of the other neighbour DID do something wrong. He blocked OPs drive and is doing a free collection to save his DD money.

All this has done is vindicate the OP that the neighbours are entitled twits who think they can please themselves.

How does living in a semi mean you both live on the corner! So you’d not discussed the previous occasions of the lorry being parked in front of yours and your good friends neighbour and how annoying it was?

Very detailed first post for a breast feeding mother, glad you got the ages in, because that was really relevant! Good job you didn’t forget that.

I’m a manager for a waste collection service and if this had been one of our crews, we would want to know about it.

I don't understand why so many posters think parking in a way to obstruct access is fine. It isn't.

NewShoes · 01/08/2026 06:44

I’d be really annoyed if a bin lorry parked across my drive so that I couldn’t get in or out for 40 minutes. I’d also have reported it as it’s really inconsiderate!

Frumpitydoo · 01/08/2026 06:47

I fear you just started WW3.

A parent blocks a drive for 5 mins when going to pick up a child...
"Block them in"
"Complain to the council"

Bin lorry parks there for 40 minutes...
"You are evil"

Haha this is so true of mumsnet

FlapperFlamingo · 01/08/2026 06:56

I think YABU OP. I am sure I annoy my neighbours sometimes, sometimes they annoy me. But if you report and start taking things further they escalate and it can get nasty - and no one wants to have to move just for a quieter life. Ok so they parked a lorry across your drive - but you didn’t need to get out and you knew where the driver was. It’s been hot recently, they stopped for a cuppa - honestly they deserve it. I wouldn’t be escalating and reporting anyone for this.

Newstart3 · 01/08/2026 06:57

I do agree in this instance though, it should not have been there..chosen to park to block you in instead of inconveniencing the host.

I think referring to OP as fatty is more than annoying.
