AIBU to stay indoors during heatwave

To stay inside all day during 33° heat. I’ve done pretty much nothing all day, read a bit, made ice coffee and booked myself a hairdresser appointment. Too hot to go out or do any housework! Basically the heat is licence to laze.

Same here - I feel guilty not “enjoying it” but it’s too bloody hot.

Course not. If you lived in somewhere like dubai you wouldnt be out every day desperately soaking up every bit of sun. It’s because we brits had most of history without proper hot summers so people think they need to be out ‘making the most of it’. Hot weekends are horrible for the NHS because so many people get heatstroke and serious burns because they think they need to be out. Just have a nice day. 🤷‍♀️

I agree it’s that British thing of feeling like we should. But we have had months of it and another month to go!

Oh that’s a good way to alleviate the “guilt”. We’re being sun responsible and helping the NHS.

I try to move as little as possible when it's hot. I hate getting drenched in sweat just from doing some basic housework so I put it off where I can.

That's how I'm just about surviving, OP. I don't mind who knows!

I make forays to the shops very early while it's bearable. I go out with my watering can in the evenings to do the patio tubs.

Otherwise, it's blinds down, windows closed and stay out of it. Luckily I'm a very early riser to I get all the physical chores done well before it gets hot.

I'm very lucky - I don't have to commute or sit in formal clothes in an office etc.

Well, most people have to go to work. But yes, if I didn't have a job I'd be lazing, certainly, so YANBU. Everything just feels exhausting in 33C, doesn't it? Reading and iced coffee sounds ideal.

It's actually nowhere near as hot as 33C where I am, though - I think it's about 25C here today which is actually pretty pleasant.

No point going out feeling uncomfortable when there is no need.
The most I have done outdoors today is to make sure the birds have plenty of food & water and to hang some washing out.

I made sure I got my jobs done yesterday. What’s the point in going out in 35 degrees if you don’t have to? I don’t get it. Stay in next to a fan x

33 here as well, I'm on mat leave and not feeling great so not set foot outside, we don't have a garden so would have to go sonewhere. Feel guilty for not getting the baby out but then they wouldn't really like it either.

In England, we’re in the suburbs just outside London. It actually hit 35° here this afternoon!

Same, it’s 33 and too hot here. I’ve looked at the weather and looks like it will be mid 20s here from tomorrow onwards which is perfect. I love the sunshine but not hellshine!

Good on you for planning ahead! I cooked a lot on Mon and Tues so we could skip a few days in the kitchen. It’s the warmest part of our home. Unbearable almost.

Come to the west of Scotland. Its cool and wet here. Quite pleasant really.

In the UK we're somehow made to feel guilty or lesser if we aren't "getting out there and making the most of it!" Hence the rush to beaches etc that we see.

It goes nuts where I live in the North East since the area became trendy and heavily populated during any holiday. We no longer go to the beach in the summer due to the huge influx of (badly behaved) visitors.

NB we are not currently part of the heatwave in the North East! It's very very stuffy and muggy but the sky is grey and it's not pleasant.

I reckon more people will migrate up to Scotland during future Summers. I certainly could see myself doing that. Temp indoors in kitchen is creeping up and up.

We did that today. Put on the portable aircons and stayed in. My kids pottered about. My toddler really wanted to go for a walk or to the park and it was a firm No from me. I don’t even feel guilty.
we go out every other cooler day, so staying in one day is just fine.

Not at all. I am working from home and I'm struggling this afternoon. I haven't been out but I have POTS so feel sick and dizzy
