People who put their car make on their number plate!

Has anyone noticed this and what are your thoughts?
People (mainly guys) who have personalised number plates but with their car type on them. For example, on my street alone there is a guy with a BMW who has a plate with “BMW” as last three letters and another with a jaguar who has “JAG”. Also used to be a boy racer nearby who had VXR when it was all the rage for them to have a fast/ fancy Vauxhall!
AIBU to find it odd? Are you just going to buy that car type forever? You don’t see anyone with DAC for Dacia or REN for Renault!

Not noticed that one.

Never got personalised plates.
My SIL and her hubby both got them but while hers was recognisable, his meant nothing to me and had to be explained. My OH & I looked at each other in confusion when we were told what it stood for.🤔

Loulou4022 · 27/07/2026 09:37

DH has one. He saved every penny to buy the car and is super proud of it, it’s is pride and joy! I doubt he’ll ever get rid of it as he’s done less mileage in it than I do in a year!

Tamtim · 27/07/2026 09:39

I think personalised number plates are wanky. Unless they’re truly funny. Then they’re just funny.

Bjorkdidit · 27/07/2026 09:43

They seem to me to be one of the most pointless things you can spend money on, but not everyone who has them continues to drive the car that it 'matches' which is even more baffling. There's someone near us who has an X5 XXX plate on a car that's not a BMW X5. Bizarre.

AmIReallyTheGrownup · 27/07/2026 09:44

I find it bizarre. You see it a lot around here particularly people who weirdly have say X5 on their number plate but are now in a Volvo.

It doesn’t irritate me quite as much as the plates that say B055 though!

This. I find most excruciating

(my dh actually has one but it’s a very random reference and looks like a normal one so you wouldn’t actually know)

Really naff, like all personalised number plates.

cupfinalchaos · 27/07/2026 09:46

My dh has this on 2 cars. Personally I think it’s showy and chavvy.

RaraRachael · 27/07/2026 09:48

Never seen anyone with the make on them but loads of people here have personalised plates.
The ones that make me laugh are those where they usd a 4 instead of an A etc. Just naff.

The only advantage is that they're easier to remember in case of an accident. I nearly got run off the road by a woman whose plate virtually spelled out her name.

IceyBisBack · 27/07/2026 10:35

I despise private number plates...what an absolute waste of money...what's the point?
I'd rather give the money to charity!

FettleOfKish · 27/07/2026 10:40

We’re in Jersey so plates are just J and then numbers. Sometimes you see J911 or J007 and wonder if the plate cost more than the car.

J999 recently sold for £40k and I wonder if it’s a (rich) fan of a memorable number plate, a (rich) fan of the emergency services or a (rich) mega-fan of Fireman Sam (IYKYK).

AuntieBiotics · 27/07/2026 10:45

DH had one of those. He bought a second sports car with a plate already on it. So for example if it was a TVR, the plate was something like P183 TVR. He wasn't fussed about the plate and investigated selling it, and having the original plate put back on the car. You have to pay the DVLA to do that and as he wasn't planning on keeping the car that long anyway, he decided just to keep the plate on it.

Would never choose personal plates.

Unless they’re truly funny. Then they’re just funny.

And like all jokes, they are only funny once. Then they become as tedious as any joke that is repeated over and over again.

All personalised number plates are wanky.

The only one that made me laugh here in the North East was a Porsche with YI PET. He did look like a twat though.

A friend has her four letter Christian name and three letter surname spelt on hers.

I have one. It is 22 years old and bought before we bought the car. Car is incredibly rare and worth twice what we paid for it (at least). Plate cost £400 at the time and is worth about £5k on its own or £10k on the car and is pretty famous among some circles.

We buy cars and keep them till they die. Will keep this car on the road for as long as possible (21 years so far, hoping for at least another 15).

My newer car has one as well, but slightly different. It just happened that the model of car could be spelled using the numeric part of the plate at the time. We were spending £50k+ on the car so £400 for the plate wasn’t extravagant. You’d only know the plate related to the car if you recognised what it was. (Also fairly unusual car.)

BirthdayTrash · 27/07/2026 11:02

Have also bought one for DD in readiness for her driving. It has her initials on it but again, in a way only people that really know her would know. Not worth anything to anyone else but she can use the same plate for life if she wants to.

I see loads of young drivers around us with FF10 NXX (Ffion) or DY71 ZZY (Izzy) or OS14 NXX (Osian) or ME64 NXX (Megan) or XS10 NXX (Sion) or XS14 NXX (Sian) or XR06 ERX (Roger) or XR08 ERT (Robert) etc.

i have a photographic memory for numberplates and will spot that before the driver if it’s someone I know!

Why does it matter to you?

I'm sure you spend plenty of money on things I would consider a complete waste but I'm happy to let you fritter away your own money.

RaraRachael · 27/07/2026 11:22

There's a guy near me whose plate spells out BOOBS - just why?

angelos02 · 27/07/2026 11:25

Tell people you were born poor without telling people you were born poor!

BillieWiper · 27/07/2026 11:28

It's to imply you have multiple luxury cars. It doesn't mean you're only going to buy that make forever. Presumably the number plate still only relates to that specific car? You don't just move it to your new one? Or maybe you do. Vanity plates are ridiculous and seem a total waste of money.

7238SM · 27/07/2026 11:32

I'd love to change their plate overnight to 'WANKER1' 😂

bowchicawowwow · 27/07/2026 11:33

DH buys them to disguise the age of the vehicle. He has one on the motorhome which looks a bit like the make of the van if you squint.

It wouldn’t occur to me that those you have listed were anything other than bog standard randomly allocated registration numbers.
