People who put their car make on their number plate!

Has anyone noticed this and what are your thoughts?
People (mainly guys) who have personalised number plates but with their car type on them. For example, on my street alone there is a guy with a BMW who has a plate with “BMW” as last three letters and another with a jaguar who has “JAG”. Also used to be a boy racer nearby who had VXR when it was all the rage for them to have a fast/ fancy Vauxhall!
AIBU to find it odd? Are you just going to buy that car type forever? You don’t see anyone with DAC for Dacia or REN for Renault!

Same with anybody that spends more than £10 on a handbag.

This is why as part of my lease deal I'm NOT allowed a private plate.
The car manufacturer wants the public to see the age. Not that I'd ever want a private plate.

I bought my DH his initials for his birthday. It was £250 which included the DVLA fee. We pay enough tax as it is and if I want to spend it on a plate then so be it, whether is costs £250 or £2500.

I pay a shedload in tax already (income and car).

I’ll pay CGT if I ever sell the plate, don’t worry. But £400 to £5-10k is a pretty good investment, no?

I don’t like personalised plates at the best of times. But DH wanted one, so I bought him one for his 40th, with his initials, he then bought me a matching plate with my initials, I almost cried, lol. So for sometime we were the wankers in the steeet. Then we split up and within weeks I didn’t have to have it anymore, phew! I’m not sure what I’ll do as the 10 years draws near, sell it I suppose.

edit: to actually answer your question, lol. I don’t understand it either. I think I’d love driving around in an Audi with a JAG plate, ha ha!

I saw one on a VW Beetle that was the German word ‘Kaefer’ which means beetle in German. I thought that was brilliant, but in general personalised plates seem rather indulgent and pointless, whatever they say.

Some people redecorate their houses regularly (I’ve never bought a sofa - DH bought ours years before we met and we’ve been married 25 years). Some spend a fortune going to Dubai or flying business class or on elaborate weddings. As mentioned above, some buy expensive clothes, handbags and jewellery they never use, or upgrade their phones every year.

These all seem pretty indulgent and pointless to me……..

As an aside, you could have put it on retention, surrendered it to DVLA then got a refund on the retention fee.

Just been sat next to a beautiful red Ferrari at traffic lights. Had a normal plate on it which seemed rather sad.

True! We all have different priorities.

They are taxed. You have to pay to renew the plate, and pay for it to be added to your car. That all goes into the exchequer.

In answer to your OP, presumably they sell the vehicle-specific plate, either with or without the car when the time comes to replace the car. I don’t think it’s odd at all.

I think it’s quite fun trying to spot them. An electrician in my area has one that ends in 240V. In our work car park, I have seen initials and consonants-only versions of people’s surnames which you probably wouldn’t notice if you didn’t know their name.

Not something I’ve especially noticed but also not something I’d get worked up about if I did. Personalised plates in general are very much something I file under ‘not for me but totally harmless’.

The only one I liked was on a bright pink Range Rover driven by a woman.
It spelled BIMBO.
I thought it was hilarious.

My father was an abusive, alcoholic nasty piece of work. He told me I’d amount to nothing in one of the last ever rants he had at me before my grandparents took me - I was 7. It lived with me for a long time.

He always wanted a car with a private plate as two people he knew, and hated, had private plates, but he couldn’t stay away from drugs or booze long enough to afford it.

It was perhaps petty and spiteful, but when I was 22 I had a good job and was doing well for myself. My therapy to undo his damage was tough, but successful. I bought the plate as my last ever “fuck you” to him. It reminded me every day I had it that I had beaten his brutality.

i also had a second last laugh when a company not far from where I lived opened with initials the same as mine and when they started doing well the owner approached me and asked to buy the plate for a large amount of money.

I do that too! I take it you’re in Wales with those names on plates.
