People who put their car make on their number plate!

Has anyone noticed this and what are your thoughts?
People (mainly guys) who have personalised number plates but with their car type on them. For example, on my street alone there is a guy with a BMW who has a plate with “BMW” as last three letters and another with a jaguar who has “JAG”. Also used to be a boy racer nearby who had VXR when it was all the rage for them to have a fast/ fancy Vauxhall!
AIBU to find it odd? Are you just going to buy that car type forever? You don’t see anyone with DAC for Dacia or REN for Renault!

MN has such a weird thing about private regs and how anyone who owns one is thick and a spendthrift and they're pointless and cringe.
'Born poor' is quite something, but at least it's an original one for this episode of 'Hate the Plate'.

Private regs cost from about £200, that's less than my handbag.
Some people wouldn't give a second thought to spending that on a dress which will be worn once.
Costume jewellery serves no real purpose but to imitate the real thing & make the owner feel good. Are we okay to spend a couple of £££ on that?

I'd love to know why there is such a disproportionate reaction to something completely harmless & no different to any other silly frippery that brings a bit of joy to the owner.
I wonder if it's subconsciously seen as a male vanity thing?

I find it utterly cringeworthy op - personalised license plates in general but particularly when people do this, what’s the point?

I have a friend who did this and then moved it onto a new car where it wasn’t even accurate. Make it make sense.

Im 45 and never owned a ‘posh’ car. I’ve worked hard since the age of 16 and bought myself a posh car last month and Yes! I have put a private plate on it! No fucks given!

People do have things like PO10 or CL10 all the time. I think personalised number plates can be great - the creative ones make me smile. Cars are a thing of great joy so people investing time and money into it is their thing. Let them have it and stop judging. Im sure they don’t think you’re all perfect either.

Yep that £100 spent on mine 15 years ago for my 40th birthday says we have way too much money!

I do it too. Half the time you can’t see the driver well, as more windscreens are tinted these days but I can spot someone I know from a long distance by their number plate. Maybe it’s a Welsh thing but personalised plates aren’t unusual where I live either and can be picked up for £300 so hardly a status symbol unless you have a very rare combination of letters that make a name or word.
Have absolutely no idea why some people seem so averse to them that they say they despise them. Think it reflects worse on them than anyone with a personalised plate.
As to the OP, BMW plates on a BMW, etc are not a new phenomenon and have always been around. Maybe you’ve just started to notice them and therefore spot them more often now. DUB is an extremely common number plate for VW, especially camper vans.

unfortunately I don’t live in Wales anymore but they have loads of them where I live too! Each to their own. My sister has one as her car is her pride and joy so it makes her happy.

When Citroen Saxos first came out in the 1990s, loads of them were registered with number plates ending in SAX. I don’t know how Citroen did it, but you could buy them from new like that. Seemed a bit naff.

Agree they look really chavvy and crass.

Both my siblings have them though so would never voice this opinion 🙈

I have one and it was bought as a present 30 years ago. I like it as it’s easy to remember, and I think that will be helpful as I age, but I wouldn’t go out and buy one.

I have a private plate. DH has a private plate. Our boys have private plates on retention for their 18th birthdays. They’re currently in nursery and primary school 😂 like a PP, I also have a photographic memory for reg plates. I think they’re great, and each to their own

I have 4 of them. Nothing outrageous or particularly expensive.

But cars are my hobby. I have a lot of them. I spend most of my non working time with them, working on them, going to car shows.

I don’t really drink, don’t smoke, don’t take drugs, I wouldn’t know a designer handbag if I fell over one and I don’t own a single piece of designer clothing. My nails are short and unpainted. I don’t wear make up. I’m not particularly girly.

My money goes on my cars and I’m ok with that. It shouldn’t matter to anyone else what I do spend my own money on. It doesn’t bother me what others spend their money on. If they want nice clothes and bags and jewellery than that’s perfectly fine. It is just not what I’m into.

Same. I don’t carry a purse never mind a handbag. Cars have been my passion since childhood (and modern cars are becoming increasingly crap) so I’m happy to pour a significant amount of my hard earned into mine. People are often shocked when I say it gets 12mpg (on a good day) or that I’m likely to spend £££s on restoration work but there are always things that they buy that I don’t understand at all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

people’s faces at car shows though make it all worthwhile.

I too think personalised plates are wanky but this did make me laugh, very clever !

I bought DS one for his 17th birthday.
I am only cross I didn’t buy an even better one I saw when he was 2. I pay buckets in tax already, have no credit card bills or a mortgage.

I have one. It looks like a regular plate, and unless you knew your cars, you would have no idea that the year it ascribes to my car is way too early for the model itself.

But the particular sequence has a sentimental value for me, and it didn’t cost a lot, so I continue to use it.

If that makes me look wanky or ‘born poor’ ( as if I should be ashamed if I had been ?) then so be it.

Yes! I find this very odd. What happens if they sell the BMW and buy a Jag? I assume they leave the plate on the BMW? I’ve also seen it on a Ford Focus ST.
I have a private plate (and a BMW). But it doesn’t say “BMW” so will go on any car. I think it’s a lack of imagination.

As per my earlier post, my plate is worth about £5k on its own and £10k on the car. Not that I would ever sell either.
