Fuming about directions woman

I live in a seaside town that, at this time of year in particular, is very popular with tourists. Therefore it's quite common to be stopped and asked for directions or local information. I never mind, but I think a bit of gratitude doesn't go amiss.

Some woman and her husband stopped me today and asked if there was anywhere nearby they could get some fish and chips. I started saying, "Yes, if you walk to the bottom of the road just behind us, you'll see a big retail park with Sainsbury's and Lidl..."

Then, when I'm mid-sentence, she cuts me off and says, "Oh that's lovely - but we just fancied some fish and chips", saying "fish and chips" as if I was a bit simple and needed them explained to me. I gave her a bit of a look and said, "And if you'd let me finish, I'd have told you which turning to take at the retail park for the fish and chip shop".

I thought she'd have the sense to realise she shouldn't have interrupted, but she made a sort of huffing noise and said, "Well THAT'S a bit rude! I was only asking." So I said, "And I was only answering - but you interrupted me. THAT'S rude. Enjoy your chips". And I walked off.

What the hell is wrong with some people?! Someone takes time out of their day to help them out, and they won't take two seconds to listen! I hope she and her droopy-faced husband are still wandering about desperate to find their cod and chips 😄

OP I’ve nothing useful to add only to say that I started off thinking you were possibly a bit mean, but as I read your feisty replies you started making me laugh. That’s not an easy job.
You’re very sharp and witty and maybe should think think about doing stand up? I am absolutely serious. You’d slaughter the hecklers. 🍻

CIaudiaWankleman · 26/07/2026 20:20

And in all honesty, your comments throughout this thread make you look like an unhappy insecure person

Absolutely not! OP has made me laugh with her comments - they're funny

I'd far rather have a conversation with someone like her than a fusty old shrew who cant bear to let people finish their sentences without rudely interrupting them.

Wow … you post about people being rude, your response is the height of rudeness! Not sure the women in question was a rude as you have stated … maybe it was you.
Assuming someone is “not very bright” because the have a different opinion to you is seriously unpleasant.

I know, it IS a bit traumatic living so close to one. The Sainsbury's sort of even things out, but really I'd rather it was a Waitrose. Nobody could object to going to a chip shop near Waitrose - even if it wasn't on the front.

What’s wrong with Lidl? I couldn’t afford a different supermarket if I tried 🙈 but I do actually like it! In response to the OP, she must have thought you were too long winded, but if I had asked, I would have definitely waited for you to finish, actually listened and thanked you very much even if I had no idea where you directed me to, so she was the rude one! Thanks for taking your time to help others!

Yep, I would rather be close to a Lidl than a Waitrose. Waitrose is an overpriced, over-rated, 'Emporer's New Clothes' dump. Ludicrous prices but no better than Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons, or Sainsbury's.

I do laugh when I see someone 'bragging' about shopping at Waitrose like they think it makes them 'better' or 'middle class.' 😂 Wrong hun. On both counts!

It's nothing to do with the fact that she has a different opinion to me. It's about the fact that she's slagging me off for "knocking a stranger" when she's doing exactly the same - i.e. with me as the stranger.

You sound like my mum leading you around the house before getting to where you need to go. You were both rude but you more as you were nasty re her husband. Next time just say you don't know and let a kinder nicer person say go down the street or up the street and turn right or left.

What is it people like you are not getting?! I didn't lead anyone "around the house" - you have to go past the retail park to get to the chip shop. How do you want me to give directions without landmarks?!

This is entirely supposition on your part.

You are being absolutely vile for no reason whatsoever.

I didn't say she should "bow and scrape". I merely expected her to listen to a single sentence that she ASKED to hear!!

This. I don't know why the OP posted on here at all though, because she is insistent she is in the right, and anyone saying she isn't is WRONG.

Erm, yeahh... you really are.

And you've completely invented this scenario where no one has read my post. You just can't handle the fact that you're the minority voice here.

Errr, yeahh I'm really not.

And I am not a minority voice either. Dozens of posters are posting to say they disagree with you and that you were rude, and your subsequent posts have been aggressive and rude too.

Own it, and stop doubling down.

I don't see how I was rude. I was the one taking time out of my day to help and I was the one she interrupted!

She sounds like the rude one here. Some people are so impatient and entitled.
