to think the UK should have bidets

Just that really. I far prefer the French habit of having a wash after having a no 2, much more civilised. The British way is actually unhygienic and gross.

Possibly my misunderstanding but I've wondered how a bidet is more hygienic though? With a toilet at least everything is contained and gets flushed. With a bidet, there may be bacteria getting sprayed around and otherwise sat breading in the bidet until it gets cleaned?

WisdomBiscuit · Today 13:34

Why is it unhygienic? It’s not like you prepare food with your bum.

🤣🤣

And just like that everyone can get their bowels to perform to order.

Some of us poo several times a day- imagine the water bill, showering after every one!

NooNakedJacuzziness · Today 14:55

When did people get so fucking prissy?

bigboykitty · Today 14:56

Topseyt123 · Today 14:37

Nonsense. We are in the UK. I don't have a bidet in my house but my parents have had them for decades. Probably for 30 years and they were in their house for over 50 years. Each time the bathroom needed refitted another bidet went in.

You can get them in the UK and they are installed using our plumbing regulations. Nothing illegal about them.

An old fashioned bidet, with taps, is fine. It's the bum guns and jet wash loos that are the issue.

pinkstripeycat · Today 14:56

bigboykitty · Today 13:36

There is, actually. Bidets are not permitted in the UK under plumbing regulations because of 'backflow' issues.

That’s not true. Loads of hotels have bidets. Hospitals have bidets, especially maternity wards. My sister has always had a bidet fitted.

It makes me chuckle wondering if people think we are unclean cos my partner is Filipino and they use a tabo which is like a little pouring jug with a bucket of water and I didn’t know how to feel when he first told me they rinse then use their hand!

But you can’t see what you’re doing, surely?

SpareMe · Today 14:56

I love a bidet. It’s not unhygienic or gross not to wash after every poo though. It’s a massive indulgence, a delightful luxury, not a hygiene necessity.

these are the comments on this topic I don’t get.

the uk has brilliant plumbing, sewerage and has had proper loos in every home and public building for the best part of 50 years.

what do we have to learn from countries who have notoriously awful toileting conditions, including laterines, open sewers, holes in the floor etc.?!!

in what other scenario would this make sense? “I really don’t think we have very good motorways in the uk, I wish it was more like Sudan”

Yes let's not learn from Finland, as its well known for its open sewers and holes in the floor.

Who mentioned Finland? The poster was talking about India.

you talk about Finland a lot but it’s a tiny country people don’t actually think about ever.

The poster literally mentioned bum showers like in Finland. Its not only Asian countries that practice toilet hygiene.

Because you mentioned it, she was responding to you.

I don’t think Asian countries practise toilet hygiene. That’s the point. They have disgusting loos and sewerage systems in many Asian countries, and the “high tech” ones just shoot your shitty water against your labia for a UTi Russian roulette

THis is the answer

Genuinely the best thing I bought last year, and under £15. Honestly I am a total convert, having coveted a bidet for ages, but ruled it out on the basis of space/expense.

yes, was going to recommend something like this. I got a really cheap version for about £1.50 from ebay or somewhere, works perfectly and small enough to hide in a cupboard under the sink or behind the bleach or wherever.

Also good for cleaning the loo if you have a MN aversion to toilet brushes!

IntoTheRoseGarden · Today 15:03

If one is rich, this should never be a predicament. Nannies, butlers and other domestic staff are trained to take a Number 2 on one's behalf. The real answer is to marry into a very wealthy landed family, eliminating the problem from the date of marriage.

Finland is one of the biggest countries in Europe, but never mind.

Findland is one of the larger countries in europe, it is far from tiny.

They are permitted but they have to be plumbed into the soil pipe as a toilet. I am thinking about getting a toilet similar to the ones they have in South Korea (and other places) that can give you a wash as well. They come with a menu.

I take it you’ve not spent a lot of time in Japan, South Korea or Singapore?

Simonjt · Today 15:09

You can get them, we had hoses rather than bidets in our bathrooms when we lived in the UK. We now have one Japanese toilet in our house and the rest have hoses.

barleyfruits · Today 15:09

Soap and a bidet bottle for me. Really helps with UTIs
