Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

You are no friend and Anna knows it. She's probably too emotionally fragile with her health situation to face up to it. I've been there and it's horrible. Hopefully when she's back to herself she bins you off to Emma and her obnoxious husband.

Merryoldgoat · 14/07/2026 23:53

This is real high school stuff. I’ve known many an Emma. She’s a bully and you are a coward.

Pinkacer · 14/07/2026 23:54

And poor Anna to be so badly treated by Emma after her poor health and lack of partner to support her. How cruel.

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:26

I should not have posted about this. It’s too nuanced and Emma is looking like a bitch when she has really good parts to her too, kindness and generosity, support, she is not this one dimensional bitch. Anna is wonderful too, but very uncompromising and political and some people find her a bit hard work. She’s great company and really loyal but a bit too fond of talking about controversial topics. I love them both and I just finding it hard to realise that I’m going to have to lose one or the other

No one is 100% bitch. We all have good points and bad points.

To put it bluntly, the Queen Bee of your social group has not only fallen out with your friend, but oh locally cast her aside.

you have not discussed it with her nor your other friend because you are worried about social implications.

as PP have said, I am glad you are not my friend. It is not your battle to be had, but you have chosen the easy option and are enabling bullying behaviour because you don’t want to deal with the consequences.

I wouldn’t value this quality in a friend. I trust in my friends to support me and to also quietly judge me if I have crossed any lines.

YABVU.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 14/07/2026 23:55

How can we get in touch with Anna? There's probably some of us living nearby who'd happily be her friend seeing as you aren't.

and cowards enable bullies

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:56

“All we know of you is what you have told us. Trust me, your own words do you no favours. By your own admission you've watched silently from the sidelines whilst Emma, a woman who you know isn't your friend and you are scared of, bullies the fuck out of a woman who is quite vulnerable. Oh, and your husband is a fanboy of Emma's dick of a husband so he wants you to stay in Emma's good books.
Did I miss anything?
Yes, I'm judging you. Get some fucking morals and a spine, woman!”

we have all known each other for 20+ years. I was hoping things would resolve without me getting involved and maybe making it worse, more entrenched. Now I see that isn’t possible. I understand why Anna is upset, I don’t want to lose her as a friend, so I will try and talk with her and see what I can do to help things

I assumed this was some kind of reverse, it was so awful.

Why on earth you seem to want to keep Emma as a friend I don't know. It doesn't say much about you tbh OP, nothing good anyway.

labradormam · 14/07/2026 23:57

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:26

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

Jesus.

Sorry to say, Emma, you and your husband all sound awful.

Can you genuinely not see that? Honestly?

Also lame that your husband "hero worships" her husband. Is he equally spineless?

I know, hero worshiping the guy who made some gross misogynistic comment about the woman who was buying him a drink, while all their friends and her sister were there. And “of course Emma would side with him” 🤮

Boreded · 15/07/2026 00:01

You are no friend, if you were you would have tried to work things out.

Awful behaviour and Anna is better off without you. You are worse than Emma because she at least shows who she is, not like you just being a coward and pretending to be nice.

Charmatt · 15/07/2026 00:03

Emma is not your friend - or anyone else's, either.

One of these days you'll be the new Anna and will be frozen out.

Anna deserves better than this and you know it! She's being frozen out because she doesn't want to be controlled by Emma.

If Emma was a man, you'd think she was abusive.

newfriend05 · 15/07/2026 00:03

Basically you’re frightened of Emma and her husband who sound absolutely vile

Lilifer · 15/07/2026 00:03

Emma’s dh has a really high flying and interesting job which I cannot say on here as it would be very outing. It’s the kind of job that other men would love to have, and he is also very charming and charismatic (apart from when he gets drunk when he becomes obnoxious but we’ve all known each other so long we all accept the faults as well as the good parts) I get that I have let Anna down but I think I have tried to make up for that with all the practical help I’ve given her this year, the lifts, the help with shopping, the collecting from doc appointments etc I’ve tried to be there in the way that I’m good at; practical help

@Lilifer I'm glad you have finally conceded that you need to try to make amends to Anna.

In this case especially. The handling of covid wasn’t exactly the stuffy insignificant ins and outs of policies that don’t make much difference either way. The impact is still being felt. I’d have more respect for someone I didn’t agree with than someone who just didn’t want to think about it.

alondonerabroad · 15/07/2026 00:06

You have treated Anna appallingly and all your attempts to make yourself look like a victim are just digging a hole. If I were Anna I’d be avoiding you all like the plague (sounds like she’s disengaged) and with good reason. Jesus I’m horrified by all of your behaviour -and over Boris fucking Johnson of all people. Get a grip and be a better friend.

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/07/2026 00:06

You will be on the receiving end of Emma, though. Because she's worked her way through everyone else, hasn't she? Only Anna and you left. You're up next.

Merryoldgoat · 15/07/2026 00:06

@Lilifer

What I don’t understand is why you haven’t asked Emma why she’s freezing Anna out. Anyone normal would’ve said ‘what’s going on with you and Anna? You don’t seem to be getting on’ and you haven’t because you know the answer - the answer is she’s decided Anna has made some trumped up transgression and you don’t want to face up to Emma being such a bully.

I was a member of a craft group a while back where the supposed queen bee tried this shit. I told her I wasn’t here for her bollocks and left the group. Every other member bar one contacted me, says they wished they’d done it. They asked to see me separately which I was happy to do and now our splinter group meets regularly without her and her bullying shite.

When she turns on you you’ll deserve it.

I’m starting to hope this isn’t real.

Noodlehen · 15/07/2026 00:08

You said yourself that you avoided Anna after your holiday because she couldn’t face it. So dont now backtrack and say it was because you were busy, you’re rightly getting your arse handed to you. You are a terrible friend and sound just as bad as Emma tbh.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 14/07/2026 23:33

This can't be true.

There's no way someone and their DH are so in thrall to another couple that they go along with bullying just so the friends carry on being nice to them. Pathetic.

But she throws great dinner parties 😂
