Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:06

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

Only read first post but I'm calling reverse.

Whatyoutalkingabouteh · 14/07/2026 23:41

You say you don’t want to take sides… but you have. You know what Emma is doing is wrong yet chose not to say anything for yours/DH benefit. How do you honestly think Anna would feel? No one has her back. You might say it to her in private but on the outside…you’ve sided with Emma rather than challenge her poor behaviour

I get it’s awkward, I’ve been in the same situation as you when a friend suddenly decided to freeze another out the group. It was awful and I’m no longer in touch with the bully. Not going to enable that sort of behaviour

calflions · 14/07/2026 23:41

For some reason I'm imagining OPs dinner parties drawn by Cold War Steve

Dragonflyspeeding · 14/07/2026 23:41

Stick with Emma OP
You are far more like her than you realise.
There. Did I make it easier for you to walk away now.

Anna's life will be better off without the pair of you. You and Emma are not nice people.

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

so baseline is that you know what you should do but you are scared to do it? And she has your husband pussy whipped too?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:02

I did tell her I would meet her to chat about it but I honestly haven’t been able to find the time. I run my own business, I was away on holiday for a week, then I had loads to catch up on when I got home. I had intended to meet up with her at some point but now she has gone quiet on me so I presume she’s upset with me. I came on here to get advice on what I should or shouldn’t do, I didn’t expect such vitriol. And fwiw I don’t think Emma would do this to me. For one thing I don’t get into heated discussions with her about politics so there’s that. And also I don’t want to sound big headed but I entertain and throw great dinner parties and Emma enjoys those and her dh gets on great with mine, Emma is not going to jeopardise that connection and we know too many people in common, that sounds arrogant but I don’t mean it in that way. I don’t challenge Emma because yes ok I’m an appeaser so we are never gonna fall out like she did with Anna

You crack on with your dinner parties and social climbing! Anna has integrity and is probably searching for a new friendship group with like minded decent people

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

You have been absolutely zero fucking support, stop kidding yourself. Your stupid cat videos have announced loud and clear ‘fuck your issues I’m not actually your friend.’ And you don’t seem to have a clue. Your dh is also shit- hero worships misogynist prick? Ewwww.

PorridgeEater · 14/07/2026 23:43

Well since you ask, yes it does sound as though you are a coward. It's sad for "Anna" if she wants support and gets silly cat videos. And you shouldn't be making promises to meet if you are not going to do so. No wonder she's gone quiet.

ThisChirpyFox · 14/07/2026 23:43

Hopefully you do lose one and it's Anna - she deserves a much better friend than you.

Funny how your tune has changed and Emma now has some amazing qualities and Anna can be too political. Like others said, you need to grow a spine. and your DH hero worshipping hers - bloody hell you both sound like teenagers who just want to be with the 'in-crowd'.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 14/07/2026 23:46

Hi OP

You said "Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma"

What else has Emma being doing to her?

Also you've said you've watched her do similar to other friends...but then there are two sides to every story etc. How many times has she done this before?

Pinkacer · 14/07/2026 23:46

I think you should tell Anna she needs better friends than you, and because your husband is friends with Emma's misogynistic husband, theres no way you can stand up to her.
Just explain that you are spineless and weak and you dont have principles and you just want to do whats best for you.

99bottlesofkombucha · 14/07/2026 23:46

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:48

I have been extremely supportive of Anna all year during her health problems. I’ve driven her to health appointments, helped her with domestic stuff shopping etc, done all I could on that front, I just didn’t want to be dragged into her conflict with Emma. Why should I be, it’s between them. Maybe Emma was hurt by Anna too in that heated argument and a wife is always going to side with her husband. I’ve been a good friend to Anna, for 20odd years , supported her through her divorce etc I think some of the comments on here are really really unfair. Basically you are saying I have to withdraw from Emma, and get off the fence. That will have very negative consequences for me. Be honest can you all say you would actually do that ? Becasue it’s easy to judge but but not so easy to do the hard things

I can categorically say I would and have done this. And stood up for what is right. It hasn’t happened between them, its happened in front of you. The standard you walk by is the standard you accept and support and entrench. As for ‘maybe I don’t know everything’, look at you willing to imagine stuff you know never happened to feel better about yourself. My kids school teaches better behaviour than that- they call it being an upstander, that being a bystander isn’t support.

jacks11 · 14/07/2026 23:46

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:14

Ok to address some points: Emma has been good to me over the years, she sounds awful here (and she is if she falls out with you) but she has been incredibly kind and supportive to me over very difficult times in my life. So has Anna. So I didn’t want to lose either of them as friends and up till recently I had hoped this would all blow over or settle down and things would go back to the way they had been. I suggested to Anna after the WhatsApp group removal that maybe she should go talk to Emma, try and iron things out but Anna totally dismissed that saying that ship has sailed and she wants nothing more to do with Emma - so now that I know it’s permanent I suppose I have to decide what to do. I do genuinely like Emma. I’m not condoning her behavior but maybe there’s another side to it. Anna can be quite strong willed and stubborn too, I don’t think she should have gotten into the Boris argument over our dinner. I’ve tried to be a good friend to both, I don’t think I should be getting so much abuse for that.

I’m confused. If you think there is no way Emma’s will ever fall out with you or be unkind to you, why can’t you stand up to her? Why are you so intimidated by her, if that is true?

You seem to think Anna should not have stood up for herself to Emma- I think she’s right to defend her sister. Few people are all bad, so I’m sure Emma does have redeeming qualities. But she is a bully.

I think you have chosen a side- Emma. Just own it and move on. If you valued Anna more you wouldn’t have let Emma treat her that way- after all, you have nothing to worry about when it comes to Emma because she won’t ever treat you badly, will she?

Busybeemumm · 14/07/2026 23:47

People who stand by and watch the bullies are as bad as the bullies themselves.

There really isn't much difference between you and Emma.

Anna is better without the lot of you. It seems like she has finally realised!

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:26

I should not have posted about this. It’s too nuanced and Emma is looking like a bitch when she has really good parts to her too, kindness and generosity, support, she is not this one dimensional bitch. Anna is wonderful too, but very uncompromising and political and some people find her a bit hard work. She’s great company and really loyal but a bit too fond of talking about controversial topics. I love them both and I just finding it hard to realise that I’m going to have to lose one or the other

From your original post Emma doesn’t look like a bitch, she is a bitch. Sometimes people fall out, no badness on either part, that is when others in the friendship group try to rise above. Sometimes one person does something very mean, as Emma did in publicly cutting Anna out, in that case you have to realise that by not taking sides you appear to condone Emma’s bad behaviour. You don’t have her back when she is mistreated, you put off seeing her, you didn’t respond when she turned to you for comfort. You have also rejected her but in a different way from Emma.
You seem to condemn Anna more for holding strong opinions and voicing them than you condemn Emma for thinking she has the right to decide who is in and out within your circle. That is your choice of course and if you are comfortable with continuing with that stance then that is fine. The more you post the clearer it is that, either through fear of Emma or hero worship of her, you won’t risk loosing the social benefits of remaining in her inner group.
There was nothing to stop you from meeting Anna, you could have heard her take and been sympathetic, you could have regular meet ups for coffee or a walk you could have maintained the friendship outwith the group.

You’re a pathetic coward. Anna is brave and has principles. She stands up for her sister and against misogynistic bullies. She’s a friend worth having. You, on the other hand… I’m deeply unimpressed. I’d add Anna back to the WhatsApp and post let’s not have bullying and let’s all call out when men are disgusting misogynists, even husbands, meet Anna and offer heartfelt apologies. She’s worth 10 Emma’s and from what I’ve read 10 of you too.

Edited

Agree!

public removal from a group is public bullying and if you do it you’re a bitch.
I’m out, I hope Anna makes some wonderful friends and has a great life. I hope your husband isn’t a misogynistic asshole like Emma’s but I guess you won’t mind as long as it’s not about you so I take that back.

"You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me."

All we know of you is what you have told us. Trust me, your own words do you no favours. By your own admission you've watched silently from the sidelines whilst Emma, a woman who you know isn't your friend and you are scared of, bullies the fuck out of a woman who is quite vulnerable. Oh, and your husband is a fanboy of Emma's dick of a husband so he wants you to stay in Emma's good books.

Did I miss anything?

Yes, I'm judging you. Get some fucking morals and a spine, woman!

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 14/07/2026 23:50

I agree with PP it does sound like bullying. Freezing someone out and other incidents because they tell you

  • they don't think Boris Johnson is clever (surely that's a proven fact now not an opinion anyway?)
  • they don't like someone making nasty sexist remarks about their sister
Is pretty horrible behaviour and I can't see what other 'side' there would be Avoiding the person who's being bullied because you don't want to get on the wrong side of the bully is pretty low and is effectively just going to be seen by all parties as condoning the bully's behaviour and siding with the bully.
MrSchubertWhiskers · 14/07/2026 23:50

Anna can be quite strong willed and stubborn too, I don’t think she should have gotten into the Boris argument over our dinner

Did it sour one of your great parties?

JuliettaCaeser · 14/07/2026 23:50

I’m now imagining Emma as Carrie Johnson which is probably really unfair!

Jeschara · 14/07/2026 23:50

I hope Anna leaves the group as you and Emma sound like a pair of bitches.
The thing that stood out to me is that your husband hero worships Emma's husband how can you have any respect for your husband? Honestly that sort of behaviour would disgust me.

Best wishes to Anna..

So the only reason you arent getting involved is because you're scared Emma will start bullying you like she does to everyone else?

Yes, that's cowardly, and Emma sounds like an awful person. She will turn on you one day. You're just delaying the inevitable by appeasing her, plus you're losing friends along the way. Better to separate from Emma now while you still have friends.

But Anna deserves better friends than you, so you should probably stop pretending to care for her and trying to gloss over the situation with stupid cat videos. That's embarrassing.

Exactly this. You are nearly as bad as Emma letting her treat a friend who you say has had some difficult times like this.
Fucking mean girl mentality. Wouldn't care about your dhs friendship either.
This has made me quite mad, poor Anna definitely needs better friends.
