Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

Your husband hero worships her husband .WTF

SilverTotoro · 15/07/2026 09:01

What have I just read. I’m not going to add another post about how badly Anna has been treated because it’s clear she’s better off without either of you and thankfully seems to know it.

Deep down OP you must know that if you are afraid to bring up certain topics for fear of how someone will react they are not your friend. If someone makes cruel comments when they get drunk it’s because their mask has slipped not because they didn’t mean it. If your DH wants you to compromise your integrity to appease someone he wants to impress then he doesn’t put you first. When people show you who they are believe them because if you don’t then you can’t be surprised when you’re on the receiving end.

Lobelia123 · 15/07/2026 09:04

I think if you truly dont want to get involved, then you have to hand out the non involvement even handedly.

To Emma . . . Ive noticed you freezing Anna out. I dont want to debate the merits of whos right or whos wrong, or thrash through the details of what led to this. I just feel its wrong and should be resolved. Its your decision how you want to go forward, but I want you to know that I will still be friends with Anna and that I wont tolerate any bad mouthing behind her back, I will show you the same courtesy to her.

To Anna . . . Im sorry its all come to this, I love you both and see some part of each side. I dont want to get caught in the middle or have to take sides. What that means for me is that I will stay friends with both of you. I give you my word of honour that I wont gossip or bitch about you behind your back to Emma or anyone else, and equally I dont want to discuss or analyse Emma with you.

Good luck as I think that even being fair handed like this, it will all blow up in your face. What your cunt of a friend Emma really wants, is for the pack to back her up while she turns on the weakest member. Shame on all of you.

It's really clear you have picked Emma's side even though you know she's being horrible. You're complicit in bullying Anna. Aren't you ashamed of treating a friend like that?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:26

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

You and your DH sound pretty awful.

LilacMeadows123 · 15/07/2026 09:08

You're a terrible friend and a coward. Anna deserves better than both you and Emma. Nothing you have said justifies your terrible behaviour.

dayslikethese1 · 15/07/2026 09:10

Seeing as you have some leverage with Emma, can't you try and talk her into reconciling with Anna? For the sake of the group friendship if nothing else. Emma should apologise to Anna unless Anna has done some terrible thing you haven't mentioned here.

HectorPlasm · 15/07/2026 09:11

Person A - I can't take it any more it's too much, please help

Person B - Here's Mr Tiddles!

Nope - doesn't work for me

Ihopeithinkiknow · 15/07/2026 09:16

You and your husband are a pair of melts and Emma and her husband are cunts.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 15/07/2026 09:19

Are you familiar with the expression ‘in vino veritas’ ?

ChiasMarineras · 15/07/2026 09:21

Why would you even consider staying friends with a misogynistic pig and his bully of a wife?

You sound so passive and spineless, it’s sad.

MyPurpleHeart · 15/07/2026 09:21

What you are actually saying OP is that you find Emma and her husband far more valuable as friends than Anna. Emma is the big personality and her husband has the amazing job. Poor old Anna is just a single mother who has stood up for herself against the top dog and is now being kicked out of the group and when she reached out to you for help you sent her funny cat videos.

I think Anna should put you all in the bin and move on.

How bloody secondary school of you.

You are spineless

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 15/07/2026 09:27

Be a good friend and step up. Anna has asked for help. Imagine if that was you. Really you should stand up to Emma but at the very least arrange separate stuff with Anna. Don't compound the problem by ignoring her and burying your head in the sand.

Dumbledora8 · 15/07/2026 09:27

Emma sounds like a bullying little wanker, and you seem to be sitting back and letting this happen to your friend. You are not a good friend. How would you feel if you were Anna?

wildnwilde · 15/07/2026 09:28

I'd have to fuck Emma right off and call her out . She's sounds vile and a bully .

Happyinheels · 15/07/2026 09:28

Poor Anna. Karma is a bitch and one day it could be you. How will you feel when your close friends clearly take Emma’s side and you’re pushed out?
Any friend worth their weight in gold would actually speak up - doesn’t have to be confrontational. But hey obviously your dh hero worships Emma’s dh so that’s all that matters hey?
You’re not a friend. And you clearly have chosen a side.

Jesus christ, get a spine!
not even just for Anna but for yourself, admitting your husband ‘hero worships’ another man so you can’t stick up for Anna or even be honest with Emma for yourself is ridiculous are you 5?

wildnwilde · 15/07/2026 09:34

Your acting like Emma is a god.shes just a woman and a fucking horrible one by the sounds of it . If I where you id be careful op cos she will be looking for another victim soon .

Hero worship a man who makes mysognistic comments about another woman 😬 Anna has dodged a bullet with this lot
