Am I wrong to stay out of a falling out between two friends?

I am looking for some perspective or advice on a difficult situation with two long term friends.
Two of my closest friends have fallen out. I’ve known both of them for years. One of them, I’ll call her Emma has been slowly and quietly freezing the other one out for over a year. My other friend, I’ll call her Anna had no idea why and has been really hurt and upset by it. To make things worse, Anna has been going through a really serious health challenge during this time and has had very little support. She’s a single mother, not originally from our city, has no family nearby. I felt awful watching Emma treat her this way and honestly I do think it’s been quite unkind.
But if I’m honest, Emma also intimidates me a little. I’ve seen how she operates when she decides she doesn’t like someone or doesn’t approve of them. She can be wonderful when she’s on your side but when she turns on someone she can be quite aggressive and cutting about it. I’ve watched her do it to others and I really don’t want to end up on the receiving end of that myself.
Then Emma removed Anna from our WhatsApp mum friends group publicly, the notification showed everyone that she’d been removed, which was humiliating for Anna and she was devastated and told me so. Up till then she’d never once asked me to take sides or get involved during the eighteen months of Emma gradually freezing her out. But after this she finally asked me directly to have her back, not to fall out with Emma or cause any scenes, just to quietly be less available to her. Less coffee, less socialising, that kind of thing. She said it was what she would do for me without hesitation.
I told her I always have her back and suggested we meet for a walk to talk. But if I’m being honest, I kept avoiding making the time for it because I didn’t want to have the conversation. Because if we talked properly, I might end up feeling like I had to actually do something. And I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that.
Then I went away on holiday. While I was away I heard about some other upsetting things that had happened to Anna but I couldn’t really face dealing with it so I sent her some holiday videos and asked how her weekend had gone.
When she told me about another hurtful incident involving Emma I didn’t really respond to that at all apart from to send her funny insta cat video. I just couldn’t face it.
Since I got back Anna has gone a bit quiet. She’s not responding when I send her funny videos or light messages. I feel like things are really awkward between us and I don’t know what to do.
I know Anna is isolated, struggling, and has been incredibly patient. I know she’s only ever asked me for one thing. I know I promised a conversation and didn’t follow through. And if I’m honest, I know exactly why things have gone quiet, because she finally saw through my excuses.
Am I wrong? Am I being a coward? And what would you do in my position?

Contact Anna, arrange a meeting and, when you meet, say you don't want to discuss Emma.

Yes.

You’re a terrible friend YABU

cantthinkofagoodusername2026 · 15/07/2026 06:22

There’s no such thing as not getting involved or not taking sides. By saying and doing nothing, you are siding with the bully. I completely understand why Anna is upset.

DontKillSteve · 15/07/2026 06:24

Emma is one of those people who could turn on a sixpence. It might be you next, think about that.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/07/2026 06:24

I’ve been in the situation where two close friends fell out and both of them fell out with me because I wouldn’t take sides.

Emma sounds truly awful. Why do you even want her as a friend?

Emma sounds like a proper c* and I would not want her in my life at all. This isnt even about taking sides, its cutting off the one who causes all the drama.
If you really cant tolerate confrontation Emma needs to go.
If she cant listen to other people opinions without then turning on people, about Boris Johnson of all things 🙄. Everyone has their view on how covid went and its very different, i never had any vaccinations and there was much discussions about things like that. Did I fall out with those who disagreed........ nope. Because I am a bloody grown up and if we all thought the same life would be very boring.
The comment Emma's husband made about Anna's sister, you yourself say it was awful so sounds like he deserved to be pulled up on it. If Emma wants to be married to a man like that then that is her perogative, but how can you tolerate being around someone who has to be right. And anyone who disagrees she starts acting like a 14 year old girl against.
And you dont want to upset Emma incase she turns on you....... I say let her turn and ignore. She sounds positively awful along with her husband, i could not be around someone like this who I am scared of speaking my opinion or being myself. God I feel for Anna, and fair play to her for speaking up in regards to the husband's comment about her sister.

Jesus I can’t believe people are being so harsh. I’ve tried to be supportive without actually taking a side. This isn’t primary school, I shouldn’t have to take a side. And it’s not easy. We all have stress in our lives and I don’t need any more. You are all judging me quite harshly without knowing much about me.

In life, at many points, we all have to choose a side. It's called being a responsible adult. I'm disappointed in you and I don't even know you.

LemonPenguin · 15/07/2026 06:36

God this is so depressing to read. My 10 year old daughter is going through exactly this kind of thing in school, it’s horrible to realise that some grown ups are still following this same sad playground pattern, desperate to keep the Queen Bee happy at any cost.

You are not a powerless 10 year old trapped in a horrible playground dynamic OP. You are a grown woman, and the way you treat your friends really really matters. Why are you tolerating this woman who treats others so badly and sounds like a nasty piece of work? What does she bring to your life? Is it really just fear of her turning on you? Do you really want to live your whole life appeasing the playground bully just in the hope she doesn’ turn on you? Most of us have been there at some point, and the freedom that comes when you realise these sad people have no power over you any more is life changing, try it!! No one is suggesting you have an out and out row with her- but maybe just disengage, and if she asks say quietly but firmly ‘I didn’t like what you did to Anna, removing her from the group was unkind’. What is the worst she can do- honestly?

firstofallimadelight · 15/07/2026 06:37

If someone treats one of your friends poorly you should support them even if the other person is also a friend. One day Emma will do this to you and it’s unlikely Anna will be supporting you.
my advice would be to apologise to Anna and tell Emma she’s out of line.

Coralsunset · 15/07/2026 06:37

What’s that saying about all that evil needs to succeed is that good people turn the other way?

You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. Do you not have any values or morals?

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:26

I hate conflict. It stresses me out. And I don’t want to fall out with Emma. She is a forceful person. Plus my dh hero worships Emma’s dh. He won’t was us falling out either

Emma and her husband are horrific people. Your husband sounds like a twat if he hero worships a misogynistic arsehole like Emma's husband and you are a very poor and disloyal friend to Anna. You would rather align yourself with Emma than support Anna who is going through a really difficult time. I assume that Anna has been a good friend to you.

Anna would probably be better off without any of you.

So you’re a spineless coward surrounded by horrible people who you would rather join in with then grow a pair of- got it

Zaza2020 · 15/07/2026 06:48

Yes i would, i have a good moral compass and i wouldnt stand for this. I'd listen to my friend and not patrionise her with cat videos. Then i would speak up in the group and leave the whats app group.

I certainly would NOT tolerate women who do this - it is a form of bullying.

thepariscrimefiles · 15/07/2026 06:50

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 22:48

I have been extremely supportive of Anna all year during her health problems. I’ve driven her to health appointments, helped her with domestic stuff shopping etc, done all I could on that front, I just didn’t want to be dragged into her conflict with Emma. Why should I be, it’s between them. Maybe Emma was hurt by Anna too in that heated argument and a wife is always going to side with her husband. I’ve been a good friend to Anna, for 20odd years , supported her through her divorce etc I think some of the comments on here are really really unfair. Basically you are saying I have to withdraw from Emma, and get off the fence. That will have very negative consequences for me. Be honest can you all say you would actually do that ? Becasue it’s easy to judge but but not so easy to do the hard things

You are watching Anna being bullied and ostracised and are doing nothing to stop it. It's obvious to pretty much everyone on here that Emma is an extremely unpleasant bully.

One day you will probably be on the receiving end of Emma's shitty behaviour and there will be no-one to stick up for you.

What would you do if one of your kids was being bullied and left out of everything at school? Would you just accept it and expect them to put up with the bullying and ostracisation? Of course you wouldn't. You know the difference between right and wrong but you are so in thrall to Emma that you have chucked your moral compass in the bin.

Samanabanana · 15/07/2026 06:55

What will OP do if Emma decides to freeze her out, I wonder? Because it sounds to me like it's entirely possible - it's weird that a heated debate about politics lead to the end of a 20y friendship. For what's it's worth OP, I would say something to Emma - it doesn't have to be confrontational and if she's a genuinely good friend, you could have a frank conversation with her without it being the end of the friendship. And I would have met with Anna and listened and asked how I could support her. Also, if my DH was a dick about one of my friend's sisters, I would read him the riot act!

Sartre · 15/07/2026 06:57

Basically from where I’m sitting you absolutely adore Emma, you’re basically wedged so far up her arsehole you would defend her to the hilt. You acknowledge both her and her DH’s hideous, ugly and downright obnoxious traits but always add a caveat to defend them.

Her DH makes sexist chauvinistic jokes when drunk but it’s ok because he has a great job and everyone loves him when sober. Emma is amazing… until you dare disagree with her on anything then forget it, she’ll completely freeze you out.

You and Emma deserve each other, mean girls stay together. I hope Anna finds some normal friends soon.

thepariscrimefiles · 15/07/2026 06:59

Lilifer · 14/07/2026 23:02

I did tell her I would meet her to chat about it but I honestly haven’t been able to find the time. I run my own business, I was away on holiday for a week, then I had loads to catch up on when I got home. I had intended to meet up with her at some point but now she has gone quiet on me so I presume she’s upset with me. I came on here to get advice on what I should or shouldn’t do, I didn’t expect such vitriol. And fwiw I don’t think Emma would do this to me. For one thing I don’t get into heated discussions with her about politics so there’s that. And also I don’t want to sound big headed but I entertain and throw great dinner parties and Emma enjoys those and her dh gets on great with mine, Emma is not going to jeopardise that connection and we know too many people in common, that sounds arrogant but I don’t mean it in that way. I don’t challenge Emma because yes ok I’m an appeaser so we are never gonna fall out like she did with Anna

Honestly, you are sounding like a right-wing caricature now! I can't believe that you are a real person. Fucking dinner parties? I presume that you and your husband are vacuous social climbers without an original thought in your heads. Your husband obviously has his tongue up Emma's husband's arse. It all sound utterly sickening and pathetic.

I think that Anna has seen the real 'you' and is deliberately pulling back. She will be massively better off without you in her life. You are an absolutely terrible friend.
