Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

It's more expensive (per capita) to fund education and medical care for a more spread out population. So it's entirely justified that it costs more per capita in the conparitavely sparsely populated Scotland to London. Rural parts of England and Wales have the same issues. Either it costs a lot more, or services provided are much less. Or both.
I think some of the decisions around the education system in Scotland in recent years have been quite faddy. But my kid doesn't go to school there so not my business really....

True, and if we also compare how bad things were before devolution, when everything was run from London, things were even worse. Education, health care, and so on have improved greatly. Though there's still much to improve. But Rome wasn't built overnight. And I believe we need full independence and full fiscal autonomy to be able to do things right, and also the Scottish government, be judged completely fairly on its performance. It's still forced to work within parameters the WM government has drawn It's budget controlled, and also pre-spent on various things Scotland might do differently, or not at all, if it had full fiscal control.

For instance, drug policy, the Scottish government's approach seems to be radically different to what it's forced to do under UK laws. The UK laws haven't been effective. Maybe the Scottish proposals for reform would work. But we can't know for sure, because they're not allowed to try.

England performs very well in the international ranking.

Listen, you’re coming across as a five year old telling their wee pal “My dad’s bigger than your dad”.

No one cares. We live here and like it, you moved back there and like it.

We’re under no obligation to support your football team and it’s so needy to demand we do.

Lots of English people behaving like weans on this thread. “They all hate us” 😭😭😭. But we’re the best 😭😭😭” I’m embarrassed for you

To the rest of the English people on this thread - thanks for being normal, much appreciated. But you must be mortified at some of the childishness and actual xenophobia on here.

To be fair there's a ton of xenophobic behaviour towards the English from Scots. I think this WC has just highlighted it.

Mad really when there's so much horror in the world.

I never asked anyone to support England. Just don't get this ABE attitude. Spending money buying shirts and flags. The England team are a canny bunch of fellas. Yes there's some idiot fans but most English people are decent.

Anyway 3rd place if we're lucky. Hopefully a good time will be had by all.

I still love Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Can you tell me what is xenophobic about not supporting a football team?

Differentforgirls · 17/07/2026 15:08

I’ll give you an example. I’m a Celtic supporter. There is no way I’ll support Rangers. Similarly my best friend is a Rangers supporter, there is no way she will support Celtic.

What’s the difference?

Not that obviously. The nastiness and hating the English. Tarring everyone with the same brush. Pathetic.

I'm away now to throw some chairs.

Humans always seem to do this. They blame everyone in a country for the country's actions.

I was speaking to an Israeli woman recently. She said that she is getting a lot of hate for being from Israel, when she had no say at all in what happened

It can be friendly though.

We have known this couple for 43 years. Raised our children together. Went on so many holidays together, spent most weekends together when we were young and then when we had our children. We are their children's aunty and uncle, and they are our children's aunty and uncle.

The children see each other as cousins.

They have Rangers season tickets, we have Celtic. They vote Labour, we vote SNP. They voted No, we voted Yes.

They now have 3 grandsons and the oldest is a Celtic fan. They take him to see them, (and we milk it).

My children call their "uncle" a wee turncoat to his face as he would traditionally support Celtic and he just laughs at them and they at him.

There is no need for bitterness.

Argentina’s eurocentric white supremacist racism is not going to be targetted at you though is it. So of course you have no issue with it.

I did explain my DH is black, but obviously you didn’t read that part. Nor presumably the part where I explained about my experiences in Brasil. If you are trying to insinuate that I am someone who ignores or dismisses racism, I find that deeply offensive.

I am not responding to your other post because it’d require a far longer and more complex reply than any of your contributions, and frankly, I don’t think it’s worth my effort!

Scots are sore losers. sad but true, worst case scenario even if we lose we will be fourth in the World Cup, I don’t even know where they placed. But they couldn’t even qualify from the group stage.

I’m English, but I always support Scotland when they are playing! Sad it doesn’t always go the other way, but like I say. Sore losers! 😂

Went from English to Scottish 🤐

But you do.
You get more back than you pay in.
if you don’t need handouts, protest to scrap the Barnett Formula. We would happily keep the extra down here.
