My new NDN has three dogs. Help?!

As per the title, we moved in a few months ago. We’re a couple with one small dog, and next door is also a couple with 3 large dogs.

They have no control over the dogs at all. One in particular, can scale the fence and jump into our garden, 🤷🏻‍♀️ which he does on a regular basis. One of them is trying to dig a hole under the shared fence. They all bark constantly.

I’ve approached them and asked if they could do something about it, and the response was that the dogs are young and will settle down.

About 20 mins ago, one of their dogs got into our garden, came into the house as the back door was open, and ran amok barking, jumping and dragging dirt all over our new carpets. I was genuinely scared as was my small dog. 😞

I’m now sitting with the doors and windows closed, when I would like to be sitting in my garden.

What the hell can I do? I’m so pissed off.

Many dogs of my breed can jump a 6ft fence without a run up, some have been known to do 8ft.

My DH is an ex-police sergeant of 30 years. He said Inside a house, unless someone, or your dog, has been bitten, the neighbours dogs wouldn’t be considered dangerously out of control. Outside would be as they could cause a car crash for example.

Who is going to report you? The people on the other side with the out of control dogs?

I could be completely wrong here but maybe trellis with plants growing on it might not count as extending the height. Especially if you errect a trellis on top of poles inside your property line not on the actual fence. Use fake plants until you can grow some climbing ones. Also if someone reported this you can counter report that you fear for the safety of yourself and your dog. Three big dogs together could have pack mentality and possibly aggressive behaviour.

I love dogs but that isn't on. Imagine if you had a small child in the house. Three large breed young dogs living together wout of control is a recipie for disaster.

Warn your neighbours that you'll contact the dog warden if their dog(s) enters your garden again, suggest they put up trellis to stop it happening.

If it happens again video it in your garden / house and contact the dog warden, and the next time after that pop a leash on it and take the dog to the dog warden or a local vets and say you found it wandering the street and didn't want it to be knocked over.

I love dogs but detest owners who have too many / too much dog for their lifestyle.

Not sure who would report you though and who to?

Maybe grow some spiky plants along that boundary?

The house that backed onto ours had a large dog that started breaking down the fence to get to us when anyone was in our back garden. When I went round to talk to them the tenants just laughed at me. I spoke to the local community police team, they take reports of dangerous dogs very seriously, and any badly trained dog can be dangerous to one degree or another. They went round to the house and had a talk and the dog disappeared. The broken fence was evidence. Coming into your garden and house seems new, so another discussion with the neighbours about how they are going to stop that from happening is definitely called for, then you might have to take it further.

The dog doesn’t deserve to be injured or killed because it has stupid owners who won’t train it.

Wait for them to come into your house and give them a bar of Ex-Lax and send them home. When you give them the dogs tell them that your dog has the shi*s and you don't want theirs to catch it. I know someone who did it and it stopped the problem

I have read and appreciated all the replies and advice - thanks! I called the dog warden and he advised me to make a note of every incident. His main line of questioning was whether the dogs were being mistreated, which I don't think they are... so I'm not sure if he'll actually do anything. He said he'll call me back anyway.

Yesterday, one of the dogs got into my house again, just as I was taking something out of the oven, and I've burned my arm as a result. 🙄🙄

I tried to speak to the neighbours again, and they did apologise, but said there's not much they can do about it while the dogs are still young.

Trellis doesn't count as height. That with some nice honeysuckle or jasmine on - perfect.

Even if you have to take it down, by the time someone has got round to complaining (that's if they even do), the dogs should have been sufficiently trained to know not to jump over the fence.

If a dog entered my house not once but twice I wouldn’t be having just a gentle kind word with the neighbour. That is totally inappropriate and dangerous behaviour and they need to fix the issue asap.

Extra fencing on their side of the garden, only letting the dogs out under supervision, whatever it takes but it must stop immediately.

They're actually claiming that there is no possible way they can prevent their dogs from coming into your garden and house?

I feel your pain OP, I'm in the same boat and three devil dogs next door and two of them are XL Bullies who long to savage me. Right now they are probably the biggest threat to my life if they were to get out unleashed. The neighbours are careful with them they are muzzled but they do get out on occasion luckily I've always been indoors when this happens and they are too weirdly inbred and deformed to be able to climb the fence but I I step into the garden they are savage me in their hearts though the fence, even if I am just inside with the window open and I make a noise they hear they run towards my house and bark aggressively at me meaning I tip toe around my own house at times and feel unable to open the window.

The situation has been reported a number of time by myself and other neighbours but nobody is interested until someone gets hurt I guess.

Agree dog warden with evidence is the place to start. Plus making your garden as secure as you can.

I'm an anmal lover and have one small dog. Does your neighbour own or rent their propety? If renting then i would inform their landlord as this is just not acceptable. I don't blame their dogs as the owners should be watchining them and not allowing this to happen. If you have spoken to them kindly and this continues then call the police or the dog patrol wardens if you have them in your area. God knows what will happen next if you don't report this matter. Do they have them muzzled? Have you reported to the police, not just the council?

Your neighbours could do something to their side of the fence to make it harder for their dogs to get over. If the dogs were getting somewhere dangerous they would take action, they're just letting it be your problem.

They can keep them in the house until they are safe to have in the garden. I have a Labrador and he never goes into our garden unsupervised, mainly because he wants to be with me, but there’s no need for him to ever be out there without me.

Suggest the trellis and see what they say but if a dog can scale a fence I expect a bit of trellis won't stop them either as it's like a ladder?

Say if the dog comes over again you will have your front door open and the dog is likely to get run over
