My new NDN has three dogs. Help?!

As per the title, we moved in a few months ago. We’re a couple with one small dog, and next door is also a couple with 3 large dogs.

They have no control over the dogs at all. One in particular, can scale the fence and jump into our garden, 🤷🏻‍♀️ which he does on a regular basis. One of them is trying to dig a hole under the shared fence. They all bark constantly.

I’ve approached them and asked if they could do something about it, and the response was that the dogs are young and will settle down.

About 20 mins ago, one of their dogs got into our garden, came into the house as the back door was open, and ran amok barking, jumping and dragging dirt all over our new carpets. I was genuinely scared as was my small dog. 😞

I’m now sitting with the doors and windows closed, when I would like to be sitting in my garden.

What the hell can I do? I’m so pissed off.

I'd raise the fences. If anyone complains, tell them it's temporary until the dogs learn not to jump over. I would also worry about your small dog (is it a terrier? I have a terrier and she'd fight anything that came over and it wouldn't be pretty....) and what if you didn't have a dog but kept, say, rabbits or chickens?

Your neighbours ought to be the ones who are dogproofing their garden, it shouldn't be on you to keep them out it ought to be on them to keep the dogs in. But if they won't, then trellis and pyracanthus...

I am sorry your going through this .
I would just stick a trellis up unlikely your neighbour will complain ,just say to them why you are doing it .Also buy camping spikes and shove them into ground around the area the dogs are digging through, hopefully its enough to just put them off digging .The sonic thing will likely just upset your dog sadly .
My neighbour has 8 dogs ,their garden stinks at times despite them hosing it down very regularly. So our outside space also stinks .Weirdly they are all lovely dogs whom I really like but its too many dogs for one household .Noise wise its not as bad as it could be but they do try to stop them barking .On the positive side if my dog barks I don't worry much .
I really would just focus on making your garden as secure as you can .
Good luck

I'd turn a hosepipe on it, honestly.

Yes I was thinking water pistol!

Thank you, I did think about a trellis of some sort, but it’s a new build and we apparently can’t increase the height of the fence at all.

Get rollers then…added scooby doo style entertainment when their dog tries to scramble over.

Whyherewego · Yesterday 19:34

I am sorry but I'd be reading the ndn the riot act. Having their dogs jump your fence and enter and mess your home is absolutely unacceptable.
The ndn should be so apologetic and frankly i would be asking them how they are preventing this from happening again. They should be the ones putting up fence trellis not you

You need to go round, and say that you are not tolerating any more episodes of this and they need to make their garden secure before you go to the local council/dog warden. It's on them to make sure their garden is safe, not yours.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · Yesterday 19:37

this sounds horrendously stressful for you, I’m sorry you’re having to deal with it.

I couldn’t carry on like this. Photograph all the evidence of the dog in your garden and the damage to the carpets and go round. It’s a legal requirement to have public liability insurance as a dog owner, ask them if you want to put the claim in against their insurance or they’ll pay out of pocket for the cleaning.

Let them know they need to get a hold of this situation, you won’t tolerate it any longer and will go down every channel available to you.

Sidebeforeself · Yesterday 19:38

A dog ASBO! Does the dog have to wear grey trackies and have a tag on its leg?!😂

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · Yesterday 19:38

This used to happen with a dog from two doors down. Huge Alsatian, would stand in my back garden and growl. Druggies for owners. I got the dog warden to take it away. The Druggies had to pay to get him back but they looked after him better after.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · Yesterday 19:39

How new a new build is it? Do you have a management firm or pay any service charges? I’d report to them as well as the dog warden/local authority.

Helpwithdivorce · Yesterday 19:40

I’d take the dog in as a stray preferably to the local dogs home. Who will charge them about £150 release fee. A few times of that happening should stop it from going in your garden

Ophy83 · Yesterday 19:41

How high is your fence? It shouldn't take too much of an addition to make it too tall for them to jump it... maybe some plants would help

You can get animal barrier fencing to stop them digging through. (Though really your neighbours should be doing this!)

Definitely take photos of all damage and keep receipts for any expenditure you are put to in case things escalate

Plants for screening: Trachelospermum jasminoides

Who do you think is going to police that? It’s incredibly unlikely that anyone will take any action. In your situation I would do it and tell the neighbours to think twice about complaining if they don’t want the dog warden involved.

Jane143 · Yesterday 19:43

Could you add some of that spiky stuff to top of fence that people use to deter pigeons? It’s better than calling the dog warden

Talkinpeace · Yesterday 19:44

Film the dogs coming over your fence
film the dogs in your garden
report the noise

talk to the council
talk to your home insurer

you have a legal right to 'peaceful enjoyment' of your property
their dogs need to be controlled by them

LightningTree · Yesterday 19:45

Report them to your local dog warden.

Dymaxion · Yesterday 19:47

Get a friend to pick the dog up and drop it off at a local vets/police station as a stray. Dog comes to no harm and neighbour's are inconvenienced, that's if they actually care about the dogs and bother to look for it !

gardenflowergirl · Yesterday 19:50

Buy one of those gadgets online or from the garden centre that emits a high pitch tone, that only animals can here. The dogs then won't want to be in the garden and go inside.

Shade17 · Yesterday 19:52

Nope, unless XL bully or other banned breed.

Happyjoe · Yesterday 19:56

Dogs will settle down, they said? As if by magic? No training. This is why some people really shouldn't have dogs.

Buscobel · Yesterday 19:56

We’ e put trellis on top of our fence in a new build. We could probably do with it even higher since next door built a massive garden room. I hope the trees we planted grow quickly.

There are six houses in our bit of the cul de sac. We don’t have any pets. There are two cats and nine dogs. There is barking.

But the OP has her own dog too to think about.

But that would also affect the Op’s dog. Nobody will care re height of fence, just ensure it isn’t trellis they can climb! We put up trellis style fence, think it’s about 10ft. Nobody has complained in the time it’s been up. There are plants which increase the height, too. Your neighbour ought to do this, but clearly doesn’t give a shit.

I’d also advocate taking the dog to the nearest rescue and dropping it off. Is it just one dog that does it or all 3? I admit I’d go ballistic on the neighbours, they’d be getting a massive row from me every single fucking time. Get them round, show them the dirt their dog has dragged in, ask if they’re paying cash or bank transfer for the cleaning fee. They MUST take measures to control their dog. You can report to the non emergency police number. You tell them you and your dog were frightened. Do this every time.

Plant a high hedge of fast growing cypresses, all along the fence, include some thorny hedging in amongst it and let the dogs try to get through that.

QuaintBeaker · Yesterday 20:08

Check it's your fence before you add anything to it. If it's theirs then it is technically criminal damage to attach anything to it.

You could put a secondary fence on your side though, if the current one is their responsibility.

I would definitely keep going round and telling them they need to collect their dog.
And I'd report it to whoever you report these things to... council?
