My new NDN has three dogs. Help?!

As per the title, we moved in a few months ago. We’re a couple with one small dog, and next door is also a couple with 3 large dogs.

They have no control over the dogs at all. One in particular, can scale the fence and jump into our garden, 🤷🏻‍♀️ which he does on a regular basis. One of them is trying to dig a hole under the shared fence. They all bark constantly.

I’ve approached them and asked if they could do something about it, and the response was that the dogs are young and will settle down.

About 20 mins ago, one of their dogs got into our garden, came into the house as the back door was open, and ran amok barking, jumping and dragging dirt all over our new carpets. I was genuinely scared as was my small dog. 😞

I’m now sitting with the doors and windows closed, when I would like to be sitting in my garden.

What the hell can I do? I’m so pissed off.

They sound like absolute idiots. Imagine if you weren't a nice, decent person. I'd be worried as hell if I had no control over my dog and he was annoying a neighbour, I'd be worried they'd poison him or let him loose further. How can they settle knowing their dog isn't safe and secure?! Does it just go back into its own yard afterwards or is the whole neighbourhood like one massive leapy maze for it? You have my sympathy, how the hell are you ever meant to relax and your little dog, too... 😔 I despise bad owners and inconsiderate, ignorant, stupid neighbours.

@Sasha07 They really do sound like idiots.

How small are your fences?!

The important thing is to do something instead of sitting indoors. Take action.

you're going to get abuse from dog lovers but yeah I was going to say if you have a back gate, leave it open when you're in the house.

If they're worried about their dog escaping they might put a bit more effort into controlling it.

We killed a dog that was loose. It was a black dog, running down the middle of the road on a foggy night and my DH could not avoid it. We had the trauma of taking it, dying, to the vet. Our children witnessed it all. The owner told the vet that it had already got out twice before on that day. They didn't deserve that lovely dog.

Some dogs can jump and climb.

Shepherd's especially.

My spaniel could scale a 6ft fence with enough of a run up

@Ihatelittlefriendsusan Even our small dog tried tunnelling under our fence when he was young, we had to put some big stones along the base to keep him in. He's elderly and lazy now :-)

I had this with a cat this week. I can't ever open my windows downstairs because the cat climbs in. I caught it in my house again this week after I dared open one of them a crack just to get some air in.

I haven't asked them about it because realistically - what are they going to say? Cat owners don't really have any responsibility for their cats, and weirdly that is socially acceptable....

Dogs however - TOTALLY different kettle of fish. I'm just aghast they were so flippant about it, aren't they worried about losing one of the dogs? Kick up a stink - you'll have the neighbours on your side. They are being totally unreasonable.

I’d take it through the house and release it into the street every time.

BruFord · Yesterday 22:10

@Hippee What an awful experience for your family. This could so easily happen to these dogs too.

Tamtim · Today 07:29

Leave the gate to your back garden open.

Mumofoneandone · Today 07:39

Council and police every time.
Slightly different set up but my leaded dog was attacked by an off lead dog. I found out the owner's address and reported it to the police. They took it very seriously and went and spoke to the owner. They had to sign an agreement to have their dog on a lead when they went out with it.

My DH is an ex-police sergeant of 30 years. He said Inside a house, unless someone, or your dog, has been bitten, the neighbours dogs wouldn’t be considered dangerously out of control. Outside would be as they could cause a car crash for example.

I’d put trellis up. Who from the house builders has got the time to come and tell you to take it down and, if they do, tell them why it’s there. I grew honeysuckle on my fence last year and now it goes way above the fence. Maybe try that. It’s not considered an extension of the fence.

Just do it.

I'm not even sure if trellis officially counts as increasing the height - I think that's more about massively tall panels or very high brick walls.

Exactly I would just do it as well.

I would not put barbed wire, put the dog in the road or whatever else shocking stuff has been suggested on here. I'd be fuming yes of course I would but cruelty? No
