Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

It would be great to win the World Cup even though I don’t really care about football. We need cheering up!

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Clearly English sarcasm is lost on you

I think there will be plenty of mumsnetters who avoid certain holiday resorts or types of holiday so they dont have to mix with brits abroad! Or want to avoid stag do central so want to stay in other areas of a city. Or raise an eyebrow at older men retiring in the phillipines.

Well the people living in those areas dont get to avoid them and probably do have a negative view.

So they holiday in misogynistic and homophobic destinations instead.

They don’t get it.
Never have - never will.
Wonder how long before they start finding hatred with Wonderwall?

Who gives a flying fuck. Hated that song before this world cup. Now I love hearing it every time we win.

I'm sure there are many lovely Russian people. It's a bit silly to dislike an entire nation of millions of people, don't you think?

It’s not about silly it’s about racism charges. I’m waiting for mine, as @Dollymylove promised. Surely the police will be here soon 🤔

Then you really need listen to they lyrics
Theu are tsking the piss out of themselves
Becsuse they know that England have a faint chance if winning but ususlly cock it up at the last minute on penalties or whatever
Also it waa written for Euro 96 when The tournament came home and was played in England .

I’m not English and even I know that the song is sarcasm and self-awareness with a lot of humour and a bit of hope. I like the song!

Are you suggesting no Welsh people live in England, taking houses from our young people? Or coming to English hospitals for treatment as yours are mostly failing? Or crossing the bridge to get better paid jobs?

Of course not. That would be silly. As I wrote in my post, it's the attitude of some English people that gets people's backs up, not the fact that they move to Wales. Many, many English people intergrate into Welsh communities by respecting the culture, learning our language and not making jokes about the locals and sheep, and the fact we have no vowels. It's the fact that some of them do exactly that, very vocally, that explains our reluctance to support the English teams. Many Welsh people move to England, but I'm sure they don't walk into shops and bars there expecting the locals to speak Welsh with them, and telling locals that they should be grateful to them for supporting the local economy. As for the hospitals, many people retire to Wales having paid into the English National Health system all their lives, and receive prescriptions and healthcare funded by the Welsh Government in their old age. They're two very seperate pots of money, as you know, so that works both ways.

Saw them at Wembley. I have always loved that song, so I was glad to hear the fans singing it.
They have said they will go to the final, if we get through.

So to follow that thought through… let’s say there was a terrorist attack in London by a person from (choosing any country) Syria. The terrorist wasn’t apprehended. If the British Army then went into a Syrian community and fired on unarmed civilians and killed 14 people including 6 people under 18 years old that would be fine? Because it’s not a one way street?

Well, let's see.

It isn't the case that the terrorist wasn't apprehended. Rather that prosecutions of them were suspended as part of the peace agreement. Do you think its OK to just let murderers go free? Because it seems you have a lop-sided attitude to prosecuting people who have killed other unarmed people.

You seem to forget that the IRA and INLA weren't in a battle with the British Army, they were mostly killing off-duty soldiers, unarmed civilians, and their own unarmed neighbours (if they had any thought they might be collaborating).

As for numbers, I see your 14 people and give you...

During the Troubles, the Provisional IRA was responsible for approximately 1,780 deaths, with around 640 of these victims being civilians. While the total includes all attack types, bombs were responsible for many of these fatalities across Northern Ireland and mainland Britain

I'm Irish and I'm up for England, but kind of clandestinely. I wouldn't be cheering for them in a pub, like, but I'm happy they're through. This may be a poor reflection on me 😁.
Harry Kane is a lovely chap.

Of course he is his parents are Irish!!

People don’t ‘hate’ the nation, for gods sake 🤣

You’re not that brilliant or interesting. It’s not that deep.

But people turn up here going ‘you hate us because we’re awesome wwaaahhhh’ and it’s just embarrassing. As if the England team is the centre of the world and we all spend time sitting around thinking of new and inventive ways to dislike you.

You oh I beg to differ…

TBH some of the Welsh are contemptible of the English.

And therefore, you're well within your right not to support our National teams either.

Seriously? The people planting those bombs were members of an illegal organisation, proscribed by both the Irish and British governments. The people who shot unarmed civilians and got away with it were British forces shooting their fellow-citizens. Literally the official armed forces of the UK, the services for whom poppies are sold, Remembrance Sunday services held etc. For all we know the surviving shooters of Bloody Sunday, now retired servicemen, are being hailed as heroes in the Albert Hall annually. Bloody Sunday isn’t an isolated incident. The British state colluded with loyalist paramilitary organisations throughout the Troubles. Again, not some proscribed splinter group of terrorists, the actual British government.

But, as I discovered to my lasting horror during Brexit negotiations when the DUP came to the fore, a significant number of British people appeared to have no idea there were loyalist paramilitary organisations.

None of this has anything to do with football, and I wish the England team well, though I don’t think it’s likely they’ll win, but the level of ignorance about the running sore that is the legacy of the colonial policy that led to the Troubles is mind-blowing.

I dont know why you think that the illegal groups are somehow immune but the British forces should not be. And that seems to be your anger.

The peace agreement conferred immunity on the terrorists just to get them to stop killing. I dont recall people in Ireland being killed by British forces after the IRA stood down.

I agree none of this has any bearing on football but I was just pointing out that the post I replied to was massively one-sided.

Also Ireland ran an ad campaign that had a ABE undertone, It was funny and not intended to cause upset, All English people I know in Ireland found it funny but I do question do we have always throw out this stereotypical tiresome anti English sentiment and Harry Kanes father is Irish, so it’s a bit hypocritical.

Feck sake. Aldi, not Also.

Don't forget the 1000 civilians murdered by loyalist paramilitaries.

But are you arguing that it’s ok for the Army to have killed 14 innocent people because of terrorists actions?

I wonder if Scotland will have another bh if we win, this one for mourning and commiserations. The snp could set it up how, I'm sure their very, erm, 'flexible' finances can support it.

Also want to say British have so much self hate, they think they are being fair but if you don’t like yourself, no one is going to like you.

On the contrary, Germans are respected.

But we don’t. I love my country, and generally the majority of people living here. And I feel very proud to be English. That’s the problem. People want us to self hate, but we just don’t. Thats why I don’t get why some races living here feel such a lack of self belief and security. Just be happy in your own skin. If you are, then it shows. Always be happy with who you are.
