Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

As a Scot, I can confirm we don’t hate you. We just can’t stand your endless “it’s coming home” crap from the media. It’s not just football, it’s the same with Rugby and it’s constant from weeks before a tournament starts. If you watch the news, it’s all England. For most Scots, it’s banter. Banter you don’t get and take too personally. Anyone but England 🇦🇷

I’m English and like football and I loathe “Its coming home.” There’s something about it that manages to be both jingoistic and utterly pathetic at the same time.

I have to leave the room in embarrassment when it’s being sung.

I have a friend who is from one of the other home nations, when I said that I would be rooting for her home country against a European nation, she was very surprised when I explained that I would always support any of the home nations against anyone other than England. She seemed to think being English I hated her nation (sports related).
Do the other home nations assume the same?

No she was horrified that she was friends with a racist bigot.

I don’t think it’s to do with football hooliganism anymore - we’ve improved & other countries have their problems.

British empire - again other countries have problematic history but I think it plays a part.

I think it’s arrogance to be honest, and a lack of awareness of our history. Brexit hasn’t helped. Now you can accuse the French of being arrogant but they are more stylish and chicer than us so they get away with it more.

Well maybe because you're not talking in Scottish, Welsh or Irish accents?

Edited

Except no one abroad understands accents. They think you are all English, so it’s you lot dragging the English down!

Im not sure it is because of the British empire. It’s because some British people behave appallingly when they go to other places. My dad follows England home and away, he manages not to get blind drink, insult people wherever he goes or fight. Although this World Cup has been extortionate and terrible for the environment he has had a great time as the coked up knob heads that often go to England games are not there (I’m not going to call them fans as that is offensive to the rest of us who are decent human beings). I assume these people are priced out.

Is this a good time to mention the riots in London after the France v Morrocco game? And wasn't it interesting that it was reported as 'football fans'

Owninterpreter · Yesterday 15:37

I think there will be plenty of mumsnetters who avoid certain holiday resorts or types of holiday so they dont have to mix with brits abroad! Or want to avoid stag do central so want to stay in other areas of a city. Or raise an eyebrow at older men retiring in the phillipines.

Well the people living in those areas dont get to avoid them and probably do have a negative view.

Then you really need listen to they lyrics
Theu are tsking the piss out of themselves
Becsuse they know that England have a faint chance if winning but ususlly cock it up at the last minute on penalties or whatever
Also it waa written for Euro 96 when The tournament came home and was played in England .

I don't think I'd be taking the piss when you think it's classy to have an 11 year old in a pub after midnight.

Oh come on, that's a bit harsh! It's the World Cup! If the 11-year-old is into football - and I'm assuming he is - it will have been an amazing treat for him. And sounds like they were on holiday, too. Don't be a fun sponge! I highly doubt that he's in the pub after midnight every Friday and Saturday night, lol!

The fact this is still being explained to posters 32 pages in is quite something.

Particularly, English football fan posters!

Yep - the French are the original style-it-out people!

For me, as an irish person, it is 100 per cent our complicated history. England spent centuries beating the Irish language out of us. When the potato crop failed, the British government watched a million people starve while exporting Ireland's actual food for profit. They sliced the island in two on their way out, creating a political mess in Northern Ireland that remains a massive issue to this day. The ultimate joke is that while Ireland remembers every single bit of this 800-year history, English schoolkids are learning about Henry VIII’s wives, the tudors, world war 1 and 2. Do English kids learn how one million irish people died in the famine while they watched on!??

Basically, they invaded us, starved us, broke the country, forgot they did it, and now wonder why we don't cheer for them in the Euros.

But, kindly, it was 150 years ago. That’s like saying you still blame Germany for World War 2. It hasn’t been forgotten at all, many English are aware of what happened and are not proud of it by any means, it was horrendous. And we have gone on to do it again when Churchill starved the Indian’s. But then again, Churchill was a complete cunt.

The Troubles I appreciate are probably very painful for many people and if that was your point then I would understand, but the famine was 150 years ago, not committed by anyone alive today. It doesn’t feel fair to be angry with living people who had nothing to do with that.

I can expect my “racism charges”?

I'm sure there are many lovely Russian people. It's a bit silly to dislike an entire nation of millions of people, don't you think?

Not from me. Anyone but England. It’s the arrogance that people hate. You turn up to every tournament expecting to win it.

No, hoping to win. Not expecting.
Like all teams and their fans.

It’s the zeitgeist, to carry baggage that’s nothing to do with anyone alive. Looks pathological to the sane.

So you are holding people of today responsible for what happened a long time ago?
That is something else.
Oh and just to educate you. The tournament is not the Euros. It’s The World Cup.
I appreciate you didn’t get a team into the tournament, but obviously you are not a football supporter.
kind of embarrassing.

Peachykeenjosephine · Yesterday 15:51

I said exactly the same thing, that the English of today can't be punished for things that happened a long time ago that we have no control over!
But I think it's more that it is blimmin annoying, the whole 1966 and "football's coming home" thing when we haven't even reached the final yet! It makes us look arrogant, and total fools when we get knocked out yet again! 😆 I really hope we make it this time, though!

987654321abc · Yesterday 15:51

Not all, but many English people behave really badly when abroad. Not just the football thugs. We are pretty embarrassing as a nation, and I think if you truly put yourself in the shoes of a native of any other country that English people regularly visit, you would understand why it’s quite fun to cheer against them.

I think the England team are very talented and deserve every success! I do think the way that the commentators and pundits talk about them is a bit cringe( “courageous” , “brave” “heroes” ) and I do think there is an undertone of aggression within all the fan celebrations. Don’t take it personally.
