Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

With regard to the football, in comparison to many countries, I think we play in a very fair way, team players always support one another (not the case where I am this world cup) plus they’re gracious losers and don’t deliberately foul the way many other countries do

I’ve literally never heard anyone say the English are known for being loud

Interesting. Do you hear anyone say anything generally?

Ok, I can talk from a point of someone who has lived in this country for a looong time, raising my family here, clearly I like England and appreciate the culture - otherwise I would not choose to live here (and I can choose).
But yes, many from where I am originally from (continental Europe) are not exactly huge fans. Not that much because of colonialism - we were not affected by it - it's more about general attitude of superiority without much to.show for tbh .
I hate to call out anything - considering it's generalization - but for example...house quality in GB is abysmal, people live with mold and damp and rotten bulging floors as if it's normal, streets are so dirty (for most Europe it's a standard to power wash everywhere at least weekly, city centres daily), hygiene standards are also often mentioned as well...The thing is all that is perfectly fine if people are comfortable with it - but just being delusional about superiority abd being completely unaware that in most European countries you'd only see this in extremely deprived areas (probably not even there).
On the topic of tourism - the British tourists often behave with a complete disregard of the fact that actual people live their lives at these places they are visiting and that you can't just vomit in front of people's doors and have a shouting competition while being absolutely wasted the whole night - would you do that in the street you live in? I doubt that, at least I haven't witnessed this where I live in London.
So yeah...I think it's general disrespect for other places cultures people - while at the same time feeling superior about being respectful and proper gentleman/ladies...

What is the ‘attitude of superiority’ a few posters have mentioned ?

Why do people think ‘the English’ think they’re superior?

When have you ever heard English people raving about our housing quality, or think our culture is superior?

Where is this idea of English arrogance coming from?

@Goditsmemargaret To put it bluntly, you are largely arrogant ill-informed cunts. Whinging that everyone doesn't hate Germany FFS - Germany is fucking ashamed of the holocaust. They have earned the respect and admiration of the world.

So ashamed that the far-right came 2nd in their last elections. 1 in 5 Germans aren’t that ashamed.

One in five though...

I don't think any of that is true. For the neutral, England are the underdogs out of the four, who have all won the world cup recently. Really quite dull if Spain, France or Argentina win! I mean one of them probably will, but England winning would be the only moderately surprising result.

I'm sure that's true for some people. But it goes beyond just football. There's always the comments about how we all apparently have bad teeth, all ugly, shit food, etc. Or just outright "ugh I hate the British." That's when there's no world cup on. Now, imagine saying that about other countries and it not being piled on and called racist/xenophobic.

No, they only do that to you. You must be giving off simple vibes.

I'm surprised she hasn't mentioned Fawlty Towers. I think she's been there for her holidays.

Yeah ive literally never heard an English person wax lyrical about the state of our housing or streets 😂 Is it our faces? Do we just have resting arrogant face or something? 😅

You’re going to have to explain that question

Livelovebehappy · Yesterday 14:46

Jealousy. Despite the cost of living and failing infrastructure, we’re still classed as a good place to live on the whole, and many of us are proud of our country. Some interpret this as arrogance because we refuse to roll over and self loathe. I think we’re pretty thick skinned too. Name calling and hatred directed at us goes over our heads, because we’re comfortable in our ‘skin’ and don’t need affirmation from anyone. The colonialism issue is pretty much irrelevant to the majority of us. It’s something which was not done in our name so why should we be made to feel guilty about it 🤷‍♀️

CloudRace · Yesterday 14:47

I thought a lot of the dislike and contempt for the English is to do with their disgraceful behaviour when on holiday in other people's countries.
Including their arrogance in not feeling the need to bother learning other people's languages.

I'm Welsh, and we regularly see contempt from (not all!) English people about our language, culture, bilingual road signs... not forgetting the 'jokes' that we should be laughing with them about, instead of taking them as the insults that they are. Oh, and the fact that we should be 'grateful' that they're coming here and buying holiday homes in communities where young people can't even dream of getting a foot on the property ladder, because they're 'spending their money here'. (Most get Tesco and Waitrose deliveries btw.) And the historical colonisation, of course. So, support for English teams on this side of the border is a bit thin on the ground.

lovecotswoldsliving · Yesterday 14:47

Backedoffhackedoff · Yesterday 13:58

Thing is since you’re not Spanish or Portuguese you have no idea how much their former colonies hate them do you?

you just have a totally England centric view of the world where you’re the centre and no one else experiences what you do. This is also why people hate the English btw

You hate the English, most other countries do not.
i have lived around the world. Everyone was welcoming and friendly apart from one country- Scotland.

DimwittedSkater · Yesterday 14:47

Well, we colonised America and they seem to love us!

:) Look, I do appreciate that English are known for diplomatic skills, but your response is a perfect example of assuming that others are so thick that unless you actually say something to them they will never know what is it that you are actually thinking...
Again - I don't want to generalize, it's a difficult topic, so many people I know here are nothing like I described above, but I am just sharing what people back home comfortably share with me when asking - how can you live there, it's awful, I could never and so on...
I personally think there are much more positives about England, I am still here and I like it...

Absolutely. The difference in last nights match between England and Norway, and a lot of the other third rate teams, and the South American ones was huge. We’re civilised. Many other countries are very uncivilised, and almost feral in their approach.

southofscotland · Yesterday 14:49

I went to a lot of the women’s rugby World Cup matches and not a single English fan was cheering for the home nations, they all backed the opposition. So I think that’s got something to do with it.

DimwittedSkater · Yesterday 14:49

It's true that other countries colonised, but Britain had by far the biggest empire.

Perhaps the haters on Reddit should remember that the British ended slavery!

IPoopRainblows · Yesterday 14:50

Also Ireland ran an ad campaign that had a ABE undertone, It was funny and not intended to cause upset, All English people I know in Ireland found it funny but I do question do we have always throw out this stereotypical tiresome anti English sentiment and Harry Kanes father is Irish, so it’s a bit hypocritical.

Well maybe you could stop sending your young people to our capital and forcing Londoners to move out of their beautiful city

I think it's some people being carried along by the Russian/right wing campaign to destabilise the UK and spread hate generally. You see threads from those guys on here from time to time.

Yes, a much higher percentage of the population than English lager louts or colonisers, yet we’re all tarred with the same brush.

Netrandom · Yesterday 14:53

OP - you are on Reddit. It is not exactly a place for nuance so it is not representative of the population at large. Aside from the empire issue (and I take your point re other empires) I think it is largely the behaviour of English fans that go before them. This seems to have improved at bit but a lot of people have experienced the violence, boorishness and ignorance of English and are understandably a bit vary. As a result they are unlikely to favour England in "neutral" circumstances.

AprilMizzel · Yesterday 14:54

ChocolateCinderToffee · Yesterday 08:58

Most of the people on Reddit are American and there seems to be an assumption that the English see the USA as a former colony. This is odd to the English because we don’t. But that’s where the resentment comes from, I think.

I think it's this - and often they are unaware of Scots or Welsh - and that other countries had empires.

I saw one a fairly big you tuber blaming europeans for colonising USA -and stealing the land from in US natives - they played a big role - but completely ignored he was of European descent sitting on the stolen land and his government being one who didn't honour treates with native tribes and still doesn't.
