My dh is insistent we get a Tesla. I am insistent we do not due to difference in opinion with Elon. AIBU?

Nothing to do with Elon but I have always thought they feel cheap and low quality inside.

Can't comment on the "mechanics" - I'm not qualified - but having been inside a few they felt cheap. So surprising!

They also get insanely hot. I know someone with one who during the big heatwave a few weeks ago, it reached 70C inside!! They have a glass roof.

KatiePricesKnickers · 14/07/2026 06:47

So much virtue signaling.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 14/07/2026 06:51

@BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw Doesn’t the glass roof have a sun shade? Cars we have with large glass opening roofs, all have shades that sit below the glass do they are no hotter than any other car. Maybe the owner didn’t operate the shade? I’d never buy anything with a glass roof and no shade! I’d never buy a Musk either. So many decent alternatives! I agree about not knowing what other CEOs think or do. Musk was in government with Trump so that’s enough for me to not buy one.

There are loads of ways to find compatible charging points! We manage without issues. You certainly are not stuck with Tesla ones.

graygoose · 14/07/2026 07:04

Not at all, I wouldn't want to give that grubby little man a single penny.

ClippyMuldoon · 14/07/2026 07:06

All the charge apps show availability. And if you need to you just wait. I am driving fully electric more than ten years now and have never been 'caught out'. Tesla chargers can be used by other models if needed, charging is not a particular advantage they have.

Ticktockk · 12/07/2026 20:20

Sorry, didn’t mean to write and run!
So, his justification is that it would be a company car (so he’s not really buying it) and that he does a lot of mileage for his job - Tesla gets a lot of miles and you can use their charger stations.
But honestly, I wouldn’t be seen dead in it 🤣 I drive a clapped out old thing and love it, so perhaps it’s not a fair comparison. He’s never been a splurgey spender and owns nothing designer etc. Maybe it’s his mid life crisis.

We would never buy tesla and think the same as you. We had a polestar. I personally think Elon is disgusting.

However the charging networks for tesla is apparently superior with quick charging available. With range anxiety and longer journeys I see your husbands point. Still wouldn't get one though as we don't do long journeys.

A friend with a tesla claims the queues for other cars are massive whilst tesla ones are short as they can quick charge?

To be honest not my experience so what i know is anecdotal. If charging is not a factor, definitely get something else.

Hottest ours got was 51 degrees during peak heatwave. Not an issue as we put the air con on 10 mins before we need to go out. Never had an issue in the 6 years we've had Tesla's.

Sartre · 14/07/2026 07:34

We had a Tesla and it was great, I can’t lie. Actually loved it. It’s super intuitive to use, no unnecessarily complicated bullshit, everything just functions really plainly. We’ve switched to a merc CLA EV purely because of Elon and I can’t get used to it at all. Nowhere near as intuitive, not keyless for some reason in 2026 and DH is constantly leaving the keys in the car as a result so it’s unlocked…

Edited

Yep this is true, Tesla superchargers are easier to use as well. Also the Tesla doesn’t get “super hot” because you switch aircon on 10 or so mins before getting in…

It's a sad reflection of Western liberal thinking that there is a greater objection / boycott to a brand such as Tesla based on its owner's political beliefs than any objection / boycott of Chinese EV's built using Uyghur (and other Muslim minorities) slave labour in concentration camps in China under a Communist dictatorship.

Your DH would have a far higher moral standing in objecting to a purchase of any Chinese EV.

Do people actually think this way?! Genuinely? I think i know about 30 people who drive Teslas, none of them care for Elon or his politics, they just like his cars....I want the 4x4 Lambo myself 😂

Steady on, that's a bit too deep. People like a visible bogeyman villain they don't have to think too hard about.

BMW and Merc drivers used to be the twats of the road with no consideration of other road users.

They have no been usurped by Tesla drivers.

Forget the Elon thing. You don't even need that.

Fair point - it probably is a bit too deep for the majority of posters here including OP.

Yes this - all I think when I see people in Teslas is that they must be a nazi supporter. I wouldn’t want an EV full stop at the moment as they make me feel car sick but Teslas are also really impractical - very heavy and too wide to park appropriately on a normal British street.

Why does your DH WANT people to think he is a nazi?

But the majority of people won't think that. It might be hard for you to understand but not everyone has the same thoughts about Teslas that you have.

This thread has rather demonstrated that most people think anyone driving a Tesla is a bellend.

The thing is as well is people buying them know that’s what people think, which means if you buy one you must on some level want people think you are the type of person to own a Tesla.

I wouldn’t touch a Tesla. Mostly because of that raging, racist bastard but also because of Jennifer Saunders’ story about getting stuck in hers on a hot day because the car had an issue and automatically locked her in and she was waiting in there for hours for a rescue guy. Absolutely fucking not.

And the people that have burned alive as the doors locked them in

Tesla driver and two kids burned alive because rescuers can't open electronic doors: reports
A Tesla driver and two kids were burned alive after crashing into a tree because rescuers were unable to open the electronic doors, according to police.

Inside the fiery, deadly crashes involving the Tesla Cybertruck | Tesla | The Guardian
This article is more than 3 months old
Cybertrucks have locked passengers inside and burned so hot they’ve disintegrated drivers’ bones. Victims’ families blame what they say is the faulty design of a truck Elon Musk calls ‘apocalypse-proof’

The blaze in Baytown, Texas, was one of five known Cybertruck fires that the Guardian has tracked – a significant amount, considering the vehicle has only sold 60,000 units and debuted just two years ago. These incidents involve four fatalities, including the deaths of three college students in California, and have been the subject of four lawsuits against Tesla. In a comprehensive look at fire danger, particularly of Cybertrucks, the Guardian has obtained hundreds of pages of police, fire and autopsy reports and court filings and company manuals, as well as interviewed lawyers and safety experts. They – as well as the families suing Tesla – allege the Cybertruck’s design led to these worst-case scenarios where fires rapidly ignite, the vehicle’s electric door handles won’t unlock and passengers are trapped inside.

Yep. That’s pretty much what we think of our neighbour.

Tell him about the friend of a dd, who had a reasonably new Tesla. Its battery got completely buggered after a long drive on holiday and he’s had to pay IIRC £15k for a new one.

Of course she did 🙄Do you really think they'd be on the road if that was the case? They'd all be recalled.

Not necessarily thick but feeling perfectly OK about driving a car built with Muslim minority slave labour in a concentration camp in the Uighur province.

Of course everyone is free to make their own choice but I personally prefer a higher ethical standard.

Equally people driving Chinese EV know that they are built using minority Muslim slave labour in concentration camps but must on some level feel perfectly fine about that.

Everyone has different ethical standards I guess.

It doesn't demonstrate anything at all. Mumsnet is not 'most people'. It's an online forum where people can say anything whether true or not to suit their own political agenda. Best taken with a very large pinch of salt.
