My dh is insistent we get a Tesla. I am insistent we do not due to difference in opinion with Elon. AIBU?

A lot of people tried to get rid of theirs (and put up anti EM stickers) due to the escalating poor political image (of EM) after buying.

A new car will be viewed in this context especially (affiliated with the politics of EM), YANBU.

Having a Tesla is really embarrassing tbh. I don't think I could!

Teslas are amazing. They are hands down the best cars you can get.

Musk only owns about 13% of Tesla.

They even look stupid.

Is Volvo the only proper EV non- fascist alternative to a swastikar?

I’d rather have a polestar. That said I can’t afford either and have a Skoda fabia

Polestar is a Chinese version of Volvo.

Do you fully approve of the Chinese regime and their human rights record?

Your dh must have more money than brain cells

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/07/2026 05:22

Meanwhile, in the real world that’s not MN, nobody gives a shit what car you drive.

I wouldn’t have a Tesla as the build quality is shite.

09s · 14/07/2026 05:38

I don’t think it matters what percentage of the company he owns. They are associated with him and I’m afraid I’d be so embarrassed to have one. Also they’re icky. The ID range from Volkswagen are good.

09s · 14/07/2026 05:39

I typed ugly. No idea how that autocorrected to icky 🤣

DogGawn · 14/07/2026 05:46

the insurance is so high, it’s not worth getting one - make sure you get a quote before you buy it!

Supersleepysheepy · 14/07/2026 05:50

I'd be looking at the latest electric bmw or volvo as an alternative. The reliability and safety ratings are extremely well rated.

Anon501178 · 14/07/2026 05:55

Personally I think they are an overdone trend, and not very nice looking cars anyway, not alone the Elon Musk link.

Look at getting a Polestar instead (much nicer looking and Swedish built)
Or one of the many other EV brands there are now...

hattie43 · 14/07/2026 05:57

I wouldn’t even get in one never mind buy one because of the safety aspect . Too many horror stories about people getting trapped and burning to death .

ChocolateSqueezyyogurts · 14/07/2026 06:06

Have a look at the BYDs if its the look of the Teslas you like

I would go with Polestar too, although unfortunately they are not built in Sweden. Depending on model they come from either China or South Korea. A new facility is currently being built at Košice, Slovakia however which will produce the upcoming Polestar 7.

Good point. I won't play Whist anymore because I don't like Trump.

AImportantMermaid · 14/07/2026 06:10

Musk is a dick but then so is Dyson, Ratcliffe, Zuckerberg, Bezos, etc. etc. …none of these people are fluffy bunny rabbits. I have a Tesla bought before Musk came out as a fully fledged knob and it is hands down the loveliest car I have ever driven. It is comfortable, responsive, requires very little maintenance and everything just ‘works’. The supercharger network is excellent. I am keeping an open mind for when I need to replace it. I’m hoping it’s not for a long time.

That’s not true. Insurance is pretty much the same as any other ‘exec’ type car. Mine is around the £500 mark.

Volkswagen was the brainchild of Adolf Hitler (not a joke).

Tell your H that better EVs are available and that driving a brand new Tesla will give him zero street cred - people will not think he is cool, they will think he is a brown nosing Elon Musk loving Trump supporting right wing twat.

Yes this - all I think when I see people in Teslas is that they must be a nazi supporter. I wouldn’t want an EV full stop at the moment as they make me feel car sick but Teslas are also really impractical - very heavy and too wide to park appropriately on a normal British street.

Why does your DH WANT people to think he is a nazi?

Mumofyellows · 14/07/2026 06:26

I wouldn’t want one either due to Elon! Have an EV on order but not a Tesla.

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 14/07/2026 06:27

Ticktockk · 12/07/2026 20:16

I do my best

Also it’s not especially relevant as the CEOs of most companies aren’t so well known, or so open about their ideologies. So I could buy a BYD for example. I have no idea who their CEO even is, let alone what horrible things they might have done.

Iocanepowder · 14/07/2026 06:29

I honestly have limited knowledge on EVs atm but I do know of one friend who nearly got caught short driving a different brand as all chargepoints were in use at several service stations during a trip. Whereas my other friend who has a Tesla waa saying that it has an app to tell you where there are chargepoints not in use at that time. So I would be doing research about the practicalities of the car as a priority over who owns it tbh.
